Unlike those u'll see in western countries (Which I assumed more like a modern boarding-school), The place had strong influence on mystical-Islamic affairs; it isn't just to deal with those who are 'different' like us, it's also a place fo other 'spiritual' stuffs, like those whom seeking some alternative treatments, those caught on black magics, to spirit possessions.
( Yes, majority people here still believe that LGBTQ+ people are lunatics and mentally ill)
even when my dad knew (about my 'little secret'), the first thing he said was, "this is unacceptable" n he may planned a visit with one of these therapies not far from my house.
Good. They're cruel and humane and they never actually changed anyone's sexuality. They just profited off helping others.
When I came out, I was prepared to give up everything and everyone. I just didn't care anymore. I was tired of being alone. Disappointed I gave up the best years of my life. But all that I feared, never came to pass. My family loves me and my friends still respect me. I know it doesn't go this way for everyone, but I sure do feel better about myself. I don't have to lie about who or what I am. Coming out has made no difference in my life, except for the peace I find in myself.

This film shows that life could be a real nightmare when you have psychotic parents and everyone around you is a monster...since you don't realize that life is too short to waste it for satisfying others. You deserve life and you have to fight for your happiness even if people you care don't understand it. Time goes by, life comes to an end and you will never have back happiness you've lost. Regret is worse than people who doesn't accept you.

My partner and I have been together for 22 years now. My parents treat him just as if he's just another one of the kids. So I never went through anything like this. It's so sad that their are so many people who do.
I also learned that you should give your parents some credit. They may turn out to not react the way you thought they would. Unless they have made it clear that it won't be tolerated. Or have made hateful remarks against gay people. When I was young I heard a friend's Dad say: if I find out one of my kids is gay I'll kick the shit out of him. I thought then what a horrible man. I was 15 and giving/ receiving oral sex with his son.
When i came out my 3 older brothers and 4 sisters all told me they loved me. Very heavy weight lifted off my shoulders.

So true for many people, and not just gay people, people with any type of difference that is shunned go through this. A great short with a great ending.
Yah, everyone feels a lack of acceptance and love. Its just human nature. Even straight cis-white privileged males.
I don't agree with his answer. He's a hypocrite, won't admit it and stupidly stays in a community with people who are homophobic. Why the hell doesn't he just move elsewhere? It then finishes with the main character returning to his phone where he's about to accept a call from his disapproving Mom and passively accepting all the negativity heaped on him. He should realise it's his parents problem, not his and just get on with his life.
JakeLikesJoking - I agree with Warren Abeshouse. I'm both sorry and angry that there is not, at least, a second episode. This will not be the end - or the alleged "cure" for any of these resident campers. The natural conclusion is these two boys ending up leaving this torture trap "together", in every sense of the word. If there truly is a God, he/she surely has a special place in hell for those making money off these families while causing their children such great psychological and, too often, physical pain. I urge the filmmakers to continue this story to a proper and HEALTHY ending. This is a horrible "lesson" to leave vulnerable kids with.
When I came out while my moms response wasn’t ideal over time and many more conversations she came to terms and we are in a great space now.

He was asked to move out too. He had all the chance to live by himself and thats even better.

Really powerful message. Stirred up a lot of emotions. A tragedy: to think there really are families who reject their own children/siblings for being who they are and think conversion camps work. Loved the music and the writing too!
wish it had shown him 'rejecting' the call, as doubt his mam was about to call and accept him, more probably more threats and hate spew. Just read real old bio book, Prayers for Bobby, (much better than the movie).. now that will make you scream with anger....

OMG, what a great idea! There needs to be Homophobic Conversion Camps -- where people can be deprogrammed from all the hate and fear and nonsense that far right-wing, intolerant, fundamentalist churches have polluted their minds with. Someone should open a chain of such camps. (Or at least SNL should do a parody of such a camp.)
Terrible message to end the movie on.
Instead of having the guy coming to the realization that the conversion camp is an abomination, and walk out on his own free will, and the guy who reported him is a hypocrite and a coward, what is left with the viewers is, if no one else will accept you, convert yourself into a fake version of yourself. How is THAT acceptance?
The guy looks too old to still be living at home. If your parents throw you out, and if no one else will accept you, be a real grown up and move to where people will accept you. Create your own family and community. But oh ... that requires courage.
No people or place will treat you like an outcast as much as your own family and hometown.

People (I mean adults) need to get to the point where they are sick and tired of trying to live their lives to satisfy someone else and always always always failing. The people you're trying to satisfy are not happy with you because you keep failing and you are not happy with yourself because you can't make them happy. So whose winning in this? No one so stop it. Live your life the best way you can to make you happy and if someone is not happy with how you are living, that is their problem and not yours. You only have one life, just like everybody else and it's your responsibility to make yourself happy. No one can do that for you and you can't do it for someone else.
When I came out, my mother cried. She also refused to tell my family and forbade me from telling them. Eventually they found out after she said something and they were confused so she had to explain it. Although, my grandfather still doesn’t know because he’s homophobic. That’s okay. I’m chill with that. All of my friends were good with it except one but he doesn’t matter because he’s an asshole. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t like me anyways bc I stole his gf (I’m bi) but you know. My other friend then came out to me as well. Now I have the bestest possible friend ever who is just perfect. And my parents still say the accept me but they say stuff like “don’t be dominant in your relationships bc that’s weird” and “I don’t think ur actually bi” but all of closest cousins are great with it. Even my male ones. Not everyone gets a happy ending like me but I’d like to think I don’t have it exactly perfect either bc most of the boys in my grade love to mess around with me (not in the good way) and get this, their leader is my ex friend. And the fact my parents don’t fully except me. It’ll be okay though.

In the event that hell does exist it is these parents and the people working in these camps who have their place.

No, unfortunately. This film was the final project of a 2-week summer camp, so there won't be a sequel anytime soon.

An unsatisfactory ending
Sadly, conversation therapy has led to so many suicides and shattered lives. Live as your authentic and true self and ignore religious nutters who tell you that you are bad or damaged.

These camps should not be allowed to exist, I can imagine the kind of permanent psychological damage you'll have to live with
I did an 8 page history (/current events :/) paper on conversion camps and they just make me so sad and scared and nowadays there are conversion camps that are disguised as less awful things that are just as mentally and emotionally hurtful. some of the hardest things i'd read at that point in my life were personal accounts about their experiences at conversion camps

You'd better accept yourself. Many people will never accept you being not straight. Some, surprisingly, have no problem with it. Hardly anyone says anything out loud unless it's negative (in my experience). Almost no one will dare to say it's OK if you're not straight, for fear of saying the wrong thing if you aren't gay, or of pushing you too far if you are. So if you are having trouble accepting yourself, find a way to do so, love yourself and love others the way you want and need to. All those so-called friends and family are no good for you if they can't accept you for who you are, if they can't love you and keep insisting you're wrong if you're not straight. You cannot help how you feel deep down. Those butterflies in your stomach, those feelings in your heart and in your shorts are just as real and true as what those straight kids feel for who they love. You are not a bad person or sick or evil for loving the same sex or not being straight, whichever flavor of not straight you are. And I wish someone had sat me down and told me that and said they loved me just the same, back when I was a preteen and teen struggling between my gay feelings and my religious faith and what all of society, including school mates (bon boys and girls) so often said and did.

I think the message was pretty clear. I know we want our happy, feel good endings but this is realer than most gay shorts out there. There are people who actually live like this in our society and we can see the damaging effects it has to the community. Albeit being tragic I thought it was well executed. The acting needs a little work but overall nice job.

It's an odd little film. The friend who is now a counselor came on to the other one, so who should have been punished? I guess the film exposes hypocrisy and the futility of trying to change. It also shows the corrupting power of our desire to be accepted "by everyone," another unreasonable expectation. Abe Lincoln knew it: "You can't please all of the people all of the time." We should be ourselves--obviously--and be the best human beings we can, then let the chips fall where they may.
The str8 world deserves a class-action lawsuit against it. On another topic entirely - how can a kid who no longer lives at home and with no job afford a phone?
The cruelty of parents towards their LGBTQIA+ children is a form of abuse no different to physical or sexual abuse. The trauma, helplessness, humiliation and sheer terror are the same. The onus lies with us, heterosexuals, to call out the perpetrators.

Sara-A They were about to kiss, that’s it. The other guy felt guilty about it since he’s been there for years and is supposed to be “cured”, so he told the people who run the camp about their almost-kiss, and those people most likely told Aiden to leave the camp or at the very least switch cabins. (That’s why he was packing his clothes back.)
JakeLikesJoking Since he got a call from his mom it means the director called her, which leads me to believe he's being kicked out of the camp. And of course the director didn't accept his side of the story = the truth.

Yes, they exist -- all run by certain far-right wing churches who try to justify themselves under "freedom of religion." Some of the more progressive states are outlawing so-called "conversion therapy" -- or at least forbidding it being imposed on any minor under age 18. But of course there will always be the crazy Republican states which not only allow conversion camps but encourage them with tax breaks.
So the parents are to blame! Fervent members of these Bible-bashing churches. Please don't tell me the Schools and Health Sector also channel the unfortunate boys into "Conversion." Gay marriage has been legal in South Africa since 2006. Prior to that the Ultra-conservative Dutch Reformed Church made gay boys' lives excruciating. No formal camps, but brimstone guilt made the cupboard business very rich. Things have drastically changed for the better though. May the Democrats win the next US election and whip the abolitionist Republicans!

That was more like the beginning of a film than a short film. The scene is set, nothing explained, nothing resolved. I know short films are short but they do need some kind of arc. Other than that it was good.

Very honestly, he needs to get as far awayy from that camp and his unloving parents as he possibly can. Ben if he is flat broke and depressed, he needs to find somewhere else and some decent people to befriend him. Somebody out there he knows, or someone he hasn't met yet, will be far better for him than to live one more second being told he's wrong, bad, sick, evil ,etc. for being gay. -- I wish I had had the courage to move out during college, or maybe even admit to friends I was gay before that, and seek help. I was scared and didn't think anyone I knew would understand or accept me. And yet apparently, a few would have helped, would have accepted me, maybe. I don't know if they would've let me stay with them or help me get a place to live, a job, and support to live on my own. But I should have done so in college, at least. My parents said they loved me, I could tell them anything. What I heard was, anything but that. And they were well-meaning but controlling and flat out wrong about some things, not just the gay thing. I was so repressed, so mixed up, that I failed out of college, and that took real work to do. If I could have come out, accepted myself, made a new and independent life for myself...somehow...and found the friends and places I needed, then my life would have been oh so different. My parents were not bad eople, but they had some issues I didn't even realize until after they were gone and I was truly out on my own, seeing how other people lived. (I'm also handicapped, it made a difference, but I was able to function on my own, mostly, just very, very inexperienced, sheltered, naive, and being around other guys in a dorm, 24/7, it was my first time for that and I had trouble with it.) I wonder how different my life would have been if I had broken free and lived on my own. I may have lost some friends, but I would have been out from under that limiting world.

When you break it down, this was actually a really terrible film. The potential was there, but it just didn’t add up.

Sorry but these kind of stories make me so angry and so disappointed that anyone can treat people like they’re worth nothing and keep telling them they’re disgusting and only will get the love of their families if they change…
If you truly feel that way, then you do not deserve that person in your life!
I try to be a very empathetic and understanding person, who can put myself in others situations and for the most part understand why they do what they do (without accepting or sharing the same beliefs) and I’m not a fan of shaming people for being close minded or having extreme views on life…
BUT … I’m finding it extremely hard to keep calm and stay in the compassionate and understanding mode towards people who without blinking, cuts off close relatives like their own children because of something like sexuality.
To people like that I have a great little 'rule of thumb'; If the reasoning behind your bigotry and every other type of judgmental behavior is “it’s unnatural” or “it’s a sin”/“it’s not what god intended” or even just “it’s disgusting”, your a moron ! (and may i suggest that we remove their right to vote until their brains starts working properly)….
Imagine if we send people to a 'Straight conversion camp'… It only sounds crazy because it doesn’t exist, and it doesn’t exist because it is still the majority of people who are straight (if we insist on using labels) so heterosexuality is still the norm. But just imagine how violating it would feel to be told that you are wrong and disgusting to find someone attractive (no matter the gender)…

docstef MD but it did? It said a lot. It encourages people to think. Things like these camps exist. There’s people who think homosexuality is a sin and that people „suffering“ from it need to and can be cured. There’s homosexuals who are forced into changing who they are, their identity, their sexuality, because how are they supposed to accept themselves when no one else does? There’s moms and dads out there who force their kids to go through shit like that.
Now you can interpret these things differently and it does depend on who watches it, but for me it raises awareness of the facts I named above. For me it sends the message of accepting everyone like they are. And it’s a damn powerful and strong message, considering the times we live in with those in power who definitely do not accept people like they are.
You need to look a little deeper :)
Do you want everything to be handed to you in gold platter?. Some stories are open to interpretation and imagination. Why do families likely reject gay sons?...... Because their pretentious religious books convince them to. Geez, this is why Hollywood no longer has subtle stories and everything is explained to us and rubbed on our faces as if we can't use logic/imagination to understand what's going on.
