My university thesis in 1973/4 was on mechanical seals and their failure modes, particularly distortion. I had a career in the oil industry specializing in maintenance and reliability of rotating equipment, and particularly the reliability of mechanical seals. I worked closely with seal manufacturers.
In short the seal faces are so flat, that we told the craftsmen to avoid even looking at them (as a joke to emphasis how sensitive they were). The faces' flatness is measured in light waves and they are very short. Distortion is very easy to impart to a seal face. They are also very easy to break. Pressing in a ceramic seal face with thumbs can easily break the seal and will distort it, plus the sweat from fingers will create a leakage gap. Maybe not noticeable on a low pressure water pump, but a high pressure seal fitted that way would likely fail on start up. Using a rag on the seal face would be a sacking offence. To fit the seals read the manufacturer's instructions.

Good video, rather than a screw driver into the impeller one could use a strap wrench....I've seen them cracked from using screw drivers...

Sorry for the delayed response. Are you asking about the shaft sleeve? If so, you can certainly leave the shaft sleeve on if it's in good condition. I am working on a new motor and removing the shaft sleeve to show you how to replace it in the case that yours is bad. Regarding a pulley, I assume you meant puller? You can certainly heat up the shaft sleeve and use a puller. If your shaft sleeve needs to be replaced, I just find it quicker and easier to use a screwdriver.

Bro I replaced the shaft sleeve on one pump a long ass time ago. Never did it again. Trust me, bro in the video struggled to take it off on a new pump, imagine one that’s 10-15 years old 💀

Stacey Tannehill Obviously you want to limit how much you have to handle the ceramic side of the seal. As long as your hands are not covered in oil or other crude, handling the seal should not hurt it.

Just rebuilt one and followed this video, and the loctite was supplied with the kit, but didn't look at the info on it before tossing it

Please don't use this video as a tutorial or guide. there are so many things that were done wrong. I am a pump and motor mechanic. I am not trying to troll just don't want people screwing up their pumps

please explain the wrong "things", obviously for the sake of the video, a new pump was used, in the field they are usually tired , need machining of gasketing surfaces, thrush bearings etc...so please explain.....
