What do these microscopic worms like to eat?

These freshwater worms can be very greedy! They have a transparent body and you can therefore observe what is going on in them. I fed them some potato starch and also yeast. You can see the food going through their digestive system.

This is so cool, they've all got tiny little hairs running down their bodies. Also i love when you dumped the yeast in, and they all went "OMG, SO MUCH". Imagine being a water worm and having infinite food dumped onto you

Aeolosoma love small pieces of spinach leaves as well. They have been used by researchers to culture the worms on many occasions. They will actually eat the inside of the leaves first so you can watch them move around between the epidermal layers with their gut contents showing the green remains of the chlorophyll they have eaten. I've cultured them for several months that way.

It is a technique called DIC. It uses polarized light and also special prisms. But you can also change the colors using colored filters.
