I'm not russian, but did the average person view the police as protectors and good people? Here in the USA there's a lot of hate for police and military and I really hate it, when somebody looks down on you for wearing the uniform it kinda sucks.
@@westcoastrenegade8594it's mostly due to how policing and the economic conditions of people, especially marginalised communities interact with one another. Generally the soviet police system mainly served as upholders of the status quo (guarantors of social and political stability i.e. breaking up violent protests and/or dissenters). The US police system, on the other hand generally also serves this purpose but also very frequently is viewed as being racist, in that it disproportionately incarcerates African-Americans and other marginalised groups, continuing cycles of poverty. this combined with the fact that many believe American prisons to resemble something very akin to the gulags of the early soviet union (which were dismantled in 1960), where forced labour is common and many deaths occur, lead most to believe that American police are not protectors, but simply a preserver of a time believed to be long passed, where marginalised peoples were enslaved and the white man reigned over them with an iron fist.
@@westcoastrenegade8594 Cops on the beat and criminal police were very much respected and generally considered serious and honest. Traffic police a little bit less so (they had a nickname going back to the 70s - '3 rubles' - like if they stopped you the standard fine they would make up would be 3 rubles). Respect declined in the late 80s thanks to the transition to a semi-market economy and underground gangs and corruptioneers getting legally rich overnight by starting fronts and empires, with the police unable to handle ballooning crime. They did the best they can, and a lot of the most honest and principled ones were either killed, left the force, or retired early due to the intense stress involved. Today the police are less respected; I know a lot of good cops, including family members, but there also some real nasty ones out there. Especially the so-called 'district police', police officers attached to a specific area, like a few residential blocks, are very bribe prone. The problem as I see it is that they have been legally defanged. There is often little they can do to catch the real bad guys, especially when those bad guys are wearing business suits and sitting in business offices or government positions.
