I pretty sure point they're trying to make is that people often seem to use the word as an insult rather than a descriptor; as in, they say it with a derisive tone, akin to how a white supremacist will often use the terms 'Jew' or 'Mexican', or similar words of cultural, religious, or ethnic identity, as an insult (With the not-so-subtle implication that it's somehow inherently bad to be whatever they called you).
