High school teacher here - not an English teacher, but I’m friends with many. I think this video is really cool, and this idea is AWESOME - but, I want to mention that a huge reason that a lot of teachers teach “classics” instead of contemporary work is cost. It’s expensive to buy 30+ copies of a novel and it’s so hard to predict how well a novel will hold up and whether kids will still want to read a particular contemporary book in 10 years (and we really need to get 10 years out of resources sometimes with such small budgets). I’m saying this because it would be REALLY COOL if there were a way for teachers to borrow class sets of your book, or share them with other like-minded teachers, or something cool like that! I have no idea if anything like that is feasible - I just know that I have many friends who teach The Outsiders or To Kill a Mockigbird not because they chose those book, but because the budget was dried up and that was what they had to work with that year. Just sharing some thoughts!

In my limited, anecdotal experience in Australian high schools, each student buys the books for the year as part of their books list along with their textbooks for the year, they then own that book. The teacher will only have their own personal copy. I think this divide may be why my high school taught several books released less than 10 years before we read them in class.
The note about teaching resources/content still would apply.

I do a lot of reading and I finished I think 3 of the at least 16 books I was supposed to read in HS.Two of them I had already read prior to them being assigned. There’s something about being told to read something that makes you automatically not want to do so.

@@mariewikiwaka3851 Same. I think I finished a grand total of 1 book that I was supposed to in HS, and that was about a month after I was supposed to. Once I was in college/after, I read as many of those books that had previously been assigned as possible. My main thing is that I'm a slow reader, so I finished about 20 pages by the time that we were supposed to be done in HS, but if I can do it on my own time, it's great! I just wish I could also get a redo on the discussion now that I know what people were talking about...

Hello Hank, as a public school English teacher and fan of your work, I couldn't be more happy that you're doing this. This is a powerful move, and a timely one. Your instincts that classics are generally seen as "better" for school, or at least not argued against, is right, but this fact is changing. Teachers are leading the fight to bring in more inclusive books (I mean, pre-20th century, how inclusive could the canon be?), and inspiring students to read what they choose to read, not what the teacher choose them to read. Sure, we encourage great books, but a love for reading starts with choice and is enhanced by a supportive guide. (reference Donalyn Miller's work and Penny Kittle, if you're interested.)
In any case, since I'm a 6th grade teacher, your book (although great) is a little out of that range. BUT, I do run and host an educator podcast called Teach Me, Teacher where we reach thousands of educators both on social media (Facebook primarily) and the podcast itself. I'll share this video on the Teach Me, Teacher Facebook page (40K strong), but I'd also like to mention it through he podcast releasing this Monday, if that'd be something you're into.
As a small side note: the show has featured Brendan Kiely, co-author of All American Boys where we talked about this exact topic, plus many other major names in education. I'd love to partner with you on this in some way, if that's something you're interested in.
Regardless, my praise to you. Hopefully the Teach Me, Teacher audience will see value in this like I do!
    -Jacob

I teach college English, and I'm doing a "literature of the new millennium" class this semester for precisely the reasons you talked about! I feel like we can't really assume nowadays that most of our students are going to come to a love of reading on their own (which seemed to be the case when I was in school), and so we have to provide students with books that speak directly and viscerally to their experiences, in a way that Henry James or Shakespeare might not. I've usually taught really canonical texts, so I'm really excited to see how things will go this semester.

@@smallandhasty Sure thing! I should say that almost all of these books contain some pretty racy material, and so they might not be appropriate for high school students, but the full list is as follows:
Conversations With Friends by Sally Rooney
My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh
A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again by David Foster Wallace
Selected Unpublished Blog Posts of a Mexican Panda Express Employee by Megan Boyle
Save the World by Ariana Reines (from her book "Mercury")
And I'll also be showing Jerrod Carmichael's 8!

I I am a Canadian middle school librarian so I wouldn’t teach a novel with a class myself but I really appreciated this video and will pass it on to other teachers and librarians in my district. At our school there is a fund for resources and we are able to buy class sets of novels, which we share among the classes in the school. If a teacher wants a book we don’t have we often borrow class sets from other schools especially if we’re not sure that the book will be a perennial favorite. We also buy smaller sets of a variety of books, to do what we call literature circles which I guess amounts to book club type discussion groups. Getting smaller sets of more contemporary books to complement titles we already have is more economical than new full class sets of single titles.

I would love to teach it someday but I’m not sure if the school I’d end up teaching in would be able to afford new books or if it would be accepted by the parents because it’s deep conservative Oklahoma south and you know how that goes. 🙃

Hank, as a teacher, I think this is really cool. I teach Middle School English, so they're a little young for the book (except maybe the eighth graders) but if I taught high school, I would definitely want to be a part of this. I think kids would be really excited to hear from an author. It helps them make connections and also can increase their love of learning. I have had students write to authors before and none of them have ever written back. I know many of them are very busy, but it is nice to see an author who actually is putting himself out there for kids.

And they came to our school and we got to chat with them and ask questions and I think Eleanor (I can't remember which of them did it) played some like literary games with us which are intended to help people write stories, and they signed our books! I still have my signed copies of Montmorency and Out of the Ashes (I had TONS of Morpurgo books, and that one was my favourite at the time)

Just a non-teacher comment passing through. Mildly surprised that 'teachingaart' was not already taken as an email handle by the art teachers of the gmail user base. Also, I want a comedy of errors involving art emails being sent to the AART email address.

This is just a heads up that the "Teacher Nerdfighters" Facebook group has been talking about this, and it might be a useful streamlined platform for teachers to interact with this project. :)

On a related note (I'm a literature student so apologies in advance for whatever stupid shit I end up writing), do you think the way we teach books risks placing too much emphasis on the figure of the author? In my view, what meaning we get out of a book should, ideally, be taken from the book, not the author. God knows Shakespeare was a prick, but I can't help falling in love with his works every time I read them

Hi Hank, I love the way that you (and your brother) engage with....frankly, everybody. But I'm wondering how you think this squares with the concept of 'death of the author?' I'm not an expert on this but I did watch a Lindsay Ellis vid on it. She might argue that your views on your book are no more important than anyone else's. Sorry if this comes off a bit like a dig, it really isn't, I am just curious.

sadly i never read a book in class that resonated with me :(
that was partly my fault because of my attitude but mostly i blame the teachers, their choice of books but even more their way of teaching them to me.
