I crossed paths with Steve at a Chicago 'burbs bar around '02. I'll never forget it was around winter time; he was in a Hawaiian shirt, shorts and flip flops drinking a cc and 7up. One cool dude...
Steve McMichael was 39 years old when he had his first professional wrestling match, 90% of fans knew that his career would never go anywhere really, but for an older guy who was really beat up, his career wasn't that bad, I remember him having a really good-looking Tombstone Piledriver
To the untrained eye, on paper he had all the tools to be a Pro Wrestler. I don't know anything about football but I'm guessing his position didn't require a lot of co-ordination because he didn't seem to have much in the ring. He had a 'loud' personality but it was more annoying than charismatic. Still can't blame WCW for taking a chance on him. He had name recognition and he was a legit huge strong guy.
rainman11985 timing and coordination are of the utmost importance in football, which is why the Chicago Bears were Super Bowl champions during Steve McMichael's Steve McMichael was charismatic, he had a lot of energy that he brought to the show, but just like wrestling, for a guy who never announced a wrestling match in his life, he didn't do too bad either, you are right, on paper he had all the tools to be a successful pro wrestler, but he was just too old, Diamond Dallas Page took a huge risk by becoming a pro wrestler at 36, but because his body wasn't as banged up as Steve McMichael's was, page had a more successful career
@@rainman11985 he was old. The NFL destroys your body. Depending on position, guys are physically destroyed by age 32. They don't call the league "Not For Long" for nothing.
@ShadowAngel those are your feelings, other people feel differently, I can name you 10 wrestlers who were 10 times worse than Steve McMichael, and all those other guys that you mentioned didn't play football for nearly as long as Steve Mongo McMichael did, Steve Mongo McMichael even said himself in an interview in 2011 that he knew his career wasn't going to last long and that he was only doing it just for fun, he had already had both knees replaced before he even started wrestling, and Paul Roma and Sid Vicious were just as bad if not worse horsemen than Mcmichael, and what do you mean age is a lame excuse? How many 39 year old wrestling rookies do you know? None, that's how many, you must not think injuries happen in football and football players stay young forever
Loved Mongo! You could tell he was legit tough and had a presence about him. Plenty of "over" guys weren't great wrestlers but had something about them. I thought Mongo was underrated in that he had charisma and personality.
He almost killed Steve Regal in that infamous match. That’s why people hate him. It’s unfair because all of the football players turned rasslers hurt people. Not that that was a good situation...but that’s the only reason. Had that not happened he’d be remembered more.
As a Packer fan used to tune in to the Chicago radio station The Score for Bears post game show with Doug Buffone, Ed O Bradovitch and Mongo after a Bears loss. They used to yell and scream which was music to our ears.
It's funny, people shit on that guy so much today, but he wasn't that terrible IMO. He was decent as a heel on the mic, and although he was limited in the ring, he had good intensity and some decent power moves.
I for one was a fan of Mongo. Love him or hate him, he had a better run than most guys who will ever put on a pair of wrestling boots. We've all seen the botches, but did anybody ever get seriously injured by Mongo in the ring? I don't honstly recall any. Mongo was a sort of muscle guy for the Horsemen, not very technically sound(which is why they paired him up with Benoit) but he played his part well enough. Granted, they gave him great opponents like Curt Hennig and Jeff Jarrett who were good at hiding flaws and could get a match out of anybody...
It's funny that I see all these comments about Mongo sucking as a wrestler. The irony is there's alot of football players who didn't last in the NFL becoming wrestlers. My gosh at least Mongo has a superbowl ring.
@@profshad3429 I am just saying he accomplished something that wasn't predetermined and not scripted. I must say that deserves more credit than what you are suggesting. But yeah I am agreeing with you on the fact he was ok. I actually never liked him enough to root for him. He just seemed very slow with everything he did in the ring hehe.
That wouldn't have went anywhere, neither man had the experience to carry on a lengthy Feud, plus Steve McMichael was really beat up from his football days, his wrestling career was over as soon as it started
He's my next door neighbor! Been friends for about 6 years, when him and his family moved to romeoville and opened a very legit restaurant! My kids call him uncle mongo. Very very dear man.
Was Mongo a great football player? Yes he was. Did he have any business in the wrestling ring? Fuck No cause he sucked and when they made him a Horse Man, WTF we’re they thinking!!!

5:28 LOL! Get 'em Tony!
This will truly go down as the greatest video in You Tube history.

Finally Tony is stepping up, for my money best, In the business.
True Prophit Agreed. He is so much better than Prichard.

Lol charming banter between the two.
I have to admit, I was a big Mongo fan back in ’96 and’97.
It's funny, people shit on that guy so much today, but he wasn't that terrible IMO. He was decent as a heel on the mic, and although he was limited in the ring, he had good intensity and some decent power moves.
If only Ahmed Johnson would have jumped ship in like 97', we could have got the greatest match of all time between him and Mongo.
I always liked Tony Schiavone.
The last minute of this is great haha
Wow! I never know Mongo had an Emmy. Damn he has some skills.

I actually really like mongo as an announcer with Bischoff.
Mongo wasn't that bad, he was better than many football stars in wrestling

Mongo vs Goldberg should have been a bigger feud.

I thought he was a great character, but his actual wrestling just wasn't up to par.
He was at Wrestlmania 11..... but he sucked at wrestling
Imagine Mongo going into the business in his early 20's.
Mongo was awesome
He's my next door neighbor! Been friends for about 6 years, when him and his family moved to romeoville and opened a very legit restaurant! My kids call him uncle mongo. Very very dear man.
Tony doesnt want to talk smack.....but
Mongo needs to be in the HOF!
Was Mongo a great football player? Yes he was. Did he have any business in the wrestling ring? Fuck No cause he sucked and when they made him a Horse Man, WTF we’re they thinking!!!
I think they wanted to prove that anyone would have been a better Horseman than Paul Roma. And to be fair, they were right.
Lois rules!!!!!!
"Cause he's never called professional wrestling."
Really, go back to WWF Raw a few months earlier and you will see him on commentary with Vince.
I remember that, he was part of Lawrence Taylor's crew of linebackers in the lead-up to Wrestlemania. Kama came out and picked a fight with Mongo.
Tony is not a good person. People think he his, bur he's a real creep.
Thumbs up just for the " Roll Tide "
Fuck the tide, go Buckeyes.
McMichael made more $$ in 1 year than tony made his whole career LOL
whats a slpot
McMichael was the worst horsemen ever
Worst Horseman ever.
Jeff Jarrett
Worse than Paul Roma?
Mongo was useless as a wrestler
