Snow! I'm in Southern Iowa and no snow yet but I'm ready. I just cleaned the coop today and did some repairs. Tomorrow I'm wrapping the coop and part of their run. I'm new to this, my chickens are 7 months old now. I'm already planning on getting 10 more in a couple months.
That coup should be made with wood walls and insulated like into a cabin for winter. The rain, snow those poor chicken suffer! People build the flimsiest cheap coops honestly!
New to your channel. Good stuff! I'm in the process of buying land to do a homestead similar to this. People keep telling me I need at least 10 acres but that seems too much for me. The bigger the acreage the more you're gonna need heavy equipment and diesel to maintain it. I want to do light farming and raise some small animals for self sufficiency. I'm thinking 5 acres or less. I found your channel while researching small homesteads. I am curious to know what your thoughts are about this.
I live in northern Indiana, and our weather so far has been just so warm. I don’t know what part of Michigan you live in but we certainly haven’t seen snow really at all.
I noticed you have chicken wire surrounding the grass area they go in, is that because you don't want them going in front of your house? Or is it to keep out predators? Or just to keep them close so they don't run away? Because in my experience chickens have great homing instincts and will always come back to the coop at night with no wire
Likely all of the above, but you gotta have 1/2-in hardware cloth over wire, or chicken wire over wire because of predators. A bobcat, racoon, or weasel can reach through or knaw wire and even chicken wire to kill a chicken. Chicken wire rips really easy. I noticed he has a dog; maybe it sleeps outside for guarding.
My loud chicken is Isa. I pick her up and hold her to shut her up. She has been a daily egg layer since she started, so no complaints.
Love watching your videos. I'm a relatively new chicken owner, and you've given me some great ideas on how to keep my six girls happy! Thanks!
That is awesome! Glad they have helped you

Its funny when you want them around to do something there nowhere to be seen but when your filming your monologues there everywhere clucking away 😂
Yes…every time!
Good job on the coop. Should be toasty and warm when it’s cold but the sun is shining .
Thank you!
I love watching your videos they give me so many ideas to do with my chickens. 🤩❤️
I'm so glad!
Winter is coming!
Yes it is!
Looks great!!🥹🤗💖
Thank you!

You could do a lot with even just a half acre so I think you would be okay!

We have had a few days of snow now 🙈
Thanks and great update
No problem 👍
Do you ever bury wire around the coops/pens to prevent predators from digging under to get in?
No, we have never had that problem in over 2 years

What brand of clear plastic sheeting did you get? Looking on Amazon a lot of mixed reviews. Thanks!
At the 11:00 minute mark-Chickens forced to roost at a 40 degree angle upward-can you fix some level roost...thanks?
I will fix this
Did I miss where the water is in that new coop?
In a bowl outside right now
I wish we would have used clear plastic instead of tarps
