  • Ever wondered how we clean the outside of our trains? We have train washing machines (imagine a normal car wash, but much bigger) at our depots to make sure our fleet always looks their best.
In order to let the brushes work their magic, the drivers have to keep their speed down to walking pace.

Anybody know why are there two arches - is there a "wash and a rinse," is it "we've got one either end of the depot so we might as well use both" or something else...? TIA

A two stage wash like that allows the detergent time to react and 'soak the dirt off' before being scrubbed and rinsed clean

I have a couple of questions. Is it only diesel electric that can be washed this way? If it is electric only, how is the train powered through this wash?? Thanks for the "behind the scenes" video.

Hi Lesley, this was shot at Haymarket depot, which only looks after diesel trains. At our electric train depots, we've very similar washers without an enclosed roof. ^Angus

I've been having this question roam in my head for awhile, cant you guys use soap on your trains to wash them or you can't do that because Germany has a train wash that can do so many steps of cleaning a train and they use shampoo?
