I learned that you can throw nades into the radiators instead of hitting them with anti-tank guns, but otherwise nope, no real secret. Still bullshit.

I always love reading the comments on videos and forum threads talking about this level. Almost everyone unanimously hates it for being disproportionately difficult. I hate it myself, and always have to go back and remind myself of how to beat it.
I know I hate this mission. The difficulty spike and what you have to do to beat that damn tank is ridiculous!
what pissed me off more than anything was that I finally got the radiators destroyed and everything, as soon as that happened the damn main cannon suddenly had 360 degree aim and suddenly the spot welkins was safe in before gets his tracks blown off in one shot and then the next turn dies with the enemy tank only having like 50hp left

LOL ME TOO, this mission is so stressful, hence I'm here. And seeing how there are fallen squad mates involved, it's even more stressing. I know I can just reload so often until the RNG is on my side but still, this is a very tough mission where on comparison our squads seem weaker than the enemy's. THAT huge tank alone is very intimidating.

This might be just what I needed. It's been kind of depressing not figuring out how to get through this mission, but I think I've got what I need now.
I still find it annoying I can complete some games like System Shock in half the time of this video.
One of the things I hated about this game: The absurd difficulty spikes they threw at you as early as chapter god damn 7.
By difficult I mean: they expected you to know you should use the scouts instead of the bloody lancers to take down this metal gear... like what in the hell? How am I supposed to know that?
And for those playing this game blind and had to look up this guide, it will get even more absurd especially in late game

By the time the reinforcements arrived I had my tank up in the hill, so I just killed all with a single mortar, and Selvaria's crossfire attacks don't damage the tank. So without knowing I killed the Ace among all the other enemies XD
Yeah that would work well. This run was awful all things considered. Somehow the least awful without saving at the time so that's something.

Yeah, I couldn't beat this mission. Three days of attempts non-stop, following guide after guide - RNG just wasn't in my favour. Was enjoying the game up until here, I've never seen such a cliff of a difficulty spike. I have no doubt there's more levels like this one, unfortunately I can't be bothered to go through more of this.
Well, i here you pal but, alleluia, this mission is one of a kind and you can really enjoy the game after that one.

All of these comments are making me feel super proud that I beat this level without using a guide. I definitely had to reset a couple times and use mid battle saves but it was manageable

@SpinCycleMKV The problem with this game IMO is that it requires WAY too much map/random event knowledge that is impossible to know beforehand unless you use video guides or constantly fail over and over. I like when games give you just enough leeway to improvise on the spot if mistakes were made. Not punish you for not being psychic.

@@Wheelio creativity, which is always an important part of war strategy, is sorely missing in this game. Decision making is severely limited in deciding results. Either you play by the games rules or you die. That’s repulsively frustrating. It’s the only reason this game isn’t thought of as one of the great ones. Part of the joys of having a squad is that you have freedom to dictate the terms of engagement. There is give and take. This can create dramatic and memorable situations. This games sense of tactics relies upon not being intuitive at all but simply accepting that even the smallest mistake will be severely punished. There’s little room for improvisation which is really a downer for any game that prides itself on celebration of strategy. This battle with Max is a breaking point for many people. It’s poorly designed and certainly shows it’s age now, not to mention when it was released. All for a challenge but the escalation of the challenge is out of balance here. Selvaria is probably the most ridiculously overpowered character I’ve ever seen and she can end things quickly. If she is so inclined. She usually is.

This is the most bullshit level of any game I have played ever.
2nd for me, the first bull level i plaued was NES TMNT dam level, otherwise known as, "THAT DAMN LEVEL!!!"

My Ass being an idiot, I used lancers to take out radiators no wonder it took forever xD
at the part when the valkyria units came, if you want to snipe them perfectly, you should stand on them temple entrance. Although the range is shorter, the didn't spot the sniper
This mission is what made me stop the game for about almost a year now, but now that I am older therefore wiser I will go back in try to beat once again.

Thank you. Sure this isn't the optimal way to do this mission, but it is safe. I tried a couple before, but I was going nuts because none of them worked for me. This strategy made me not giving up this game so easily =P
Funny, Catherine seems to be the blindest sniper of the game, lots of rage quits due to her misses down here too :D

Catherine killed selvaria in two shots on the mission where you fight her. Her doing that secured her in my list of favorites.
Marina with the sniper you get from the Edy challenges is legit the best sniper in the game. Her ultimate potential offsets the lower accuracy and the damage is monstrous. Enough to make her a bootleg anti-tank unit, able to destroy them from half the map away if even a pixel of the radiator is sticking out.
Bonus points for being my favourite non-main squad 7 character as well

Thank you so much for the guide. The level didn't communicate itself properly. When it first told me you had to blow the wall ruins down, I did so via ranged with my tank and lancers; not really understanding that you're supposed to blow them up within close range, in order for them collapse in a single shot. Could have saved so much time had I known this. Also, I did not know you could climb the big tank and snipe those dudes at start. More time could have been saved there too, as I kept going the long way to reach those guys. Anyways, loving the game but this level sucked.
This mission is a real buzz killer like seriously i'd like to kill myself after 7 tries.
i actually figured out to just get my scouts to throw grneades into those damn radiators

If a tank or the Batomys stands in the location a wall would fall upon, that wall CANNOT be knocked over.
I was thinking you had to have the wall and debris fall on him. But basically you shoot them so that it will get in his way and then he will shoot it and his radiators will be exposed.
Also I am glad I am not the only one to have sniper who ALWAYS MISS. You should try that accuracy order on your snipers.

Thanks this strategy worked for me. This level became one of my most hated video game levels.
Absolutely hated this level. It started out feeling easy, I took out all the turrets and then blew up one radiator and then it all went to crap. Didn’t understand how to open them and then I remembered the dialog about the ruin walls and tried to figure that out. Eventually I ended up dying because my tank blocked the way to climbing the ladder to one of the radiators. Then after replaying 2 more times I thought I was done after blowing up the radiators only to learn that was just it’s shields. Luckily I survived the massacre because I didn’t have enough fire power to destroy it the first time, and then I barely defeated the tank on my last shot after noticing my tank did more damage up close to it. All in all this level was garbage and about 3 hours I won’t get back.

when i played this mission for the first time, everything went smoothly until Selveria came. She took down 3 of my men that i used to rescue the one she took down the turn before. Then I had an idea, using Edelweiss to shield my troop form her. Still managed to get A rank.

The IGN walkthrough said it was impossible to beat this mission on your first try. You proved that wrong, so thank you for making this. Also, aside from leaving your units out in the open to die, this was a very good walkthrough. A few tweaks to the plan and this would have been perfect.
I am also living proof that even though I went into this game full blind, save for three casualties and a desperate 20 CP rush for the victory, I still beat this first try. Does that make me a god?
Hate to be that guy, obviously that wasn't his first try. He knew to knock down the walls and climb the ladder without any instruction. Still a solid run, though.

Why does this mission exist? This killed my attempt at this game when it first came out 10 years ago. And without this video, I would have quit again.
The most annoying part of this level is somehow blocking the tank so it doesn't move. Also trying to stay out of the tank's firing range, it seems like you have to be almost inhumanly precise with your tank placement if you want to stay close enough to damage the radiators and not get shot when it advances.
Do literally anything and get one shot. Truly a fun and engaging level.
notice that the enemy reinforcements use the trench A4 to rach maximilian's tank. So what you do? position the Edelweiss facing the trench right at the entrance before the reinforcements arrive (put the Edelweiss as close as u can to the rock at the left side of the entrance so maximilian's tank doesn't shot Edelweiss with his main gun). Then when they try to cross the trench the scouts will die (i laughed a lot since they just ran straight towards Edelweiss), the shocktroopers and the lancer will be close to each other (send a mortar at them, them shoot the lancer in the head with the Edelweiss)

That battle took me an hour and at the very end my tank was at 40 hp so I shot it from afar and my pre positioned lancers shot at it and ended up taking it down.
I complete the mission today with at least 4 tries
When Selvaria showed up, i didn't had any ideia from where their reinforcements would come, or the how far she could move in 1 turn...
Now i will eternally have PTSD from this chapter

Reading comprehension saved me from this mission being too hard (it clearly says in the dialogue you need to climb the tank's ladder and do something, which isn't hard to figure out). However once Selvaria enters the fray it gets incredibly harder lol I hate her.

you can actually take out the turrets with 1 lancer shot + 1 tank round saving you 1 cp per turret
I did this mission in 11 turns (would have been 10 if Jann didn't hit the rock instead of the Battomy) I lost two people, my engineer and lancer (can't remember who). If you stand in front of Selveria with your tank she can't shoot through you, this is how I can safely move my units around if Edelweiss is in front of Selveria. Remember to have your radiator facing away from Selveria, otherwise you will be destroyed. I first try and destroy the two radiators at the left side and the back like in the video and go for the last one on the right. I saw that you can do it with less units and using orders, which I sometimes neglect to use unless necessary.
I had hard time with last mission, but comments of this gives me dread

Here's goes attempt 20, the Lancers are ridiculous. Hide behind the woman w the effing ray gun then one shots my tank. This mission blows.
I did this in 8 mission in turns and still got rank B instead of A...
I had a glitch and the tank is not even move
I finally beat this level after making mistakes for killing troops, or the occasional scout death by that damn Tank.
Once the radiators were exposed, I drove the Eldelweiss towards it with scouts behind them, and barely managed to kill it with 2HP on my tank left.
Fuck this mission, and fuck Selvaria, she literally one shotted everyone except for Largo (who was behind a wall in front of Maxmilian lol), and Aika who was following the tank.

This level plays like a DnD campaign when the DM is too obsessed with how cool their villian is.
This is legitimately the worst level I have ever played in a strategy game, and I've played some shitty fucking levels, so that's really saying something.
I nicknamed that one-hit-kill weapon "BITCH GUN" and raged the crap out of this game so many times! Yesterday (4-5 months later) I gave it one more try and made it! Now I can keep playing it in peace.

Well, that mission didn't go as bad as I thought it would be, after seeing that strategy.
Sure, I mainly inspired my strategy of the beginning of the match... But I got a "B" rating, which was the highest rating I had gotten in a while.

Have a scout for the last radiator and prepare the edelweiss for consecutive attacks

Nikolaj Steffensen Do a fairly easy skirmish battle.The forest skirmish is pretty rewarding at that part of the game. The game doesn't get easier but its god damn fun.
i know.... the problem is all my classes well.... my best class is currently at level 6 or 7.... that and i always forget to use orders...
Nikolaj Steffensen Wow you're certainly underleved unfortunately the bruhma skirmish is not yet available.In the forest skirmish ignore the ordinary opponents and go for the flag.A few head shots should clear out the assholes.That place gives you around 15000exp on so start training.But if you don't wanna train here.Sylvaria won't be a problem if you do it this way.

It's really not that hard, I'm sure you can do it. The video definitely made it easier, but I beat it my first time without watching this. Only got C rank though.
The trick is not to expose yourself to turrets while attacking them. Also, to take out the enemy infantry before they have their turn. I just sniped them and spammed save/reload when they missed.
I didn't know to use the grenade on the radiators -_-

I did it like you did. Man she was persistent at killing largo lol. I retried several times to hide him so no one dies but she kept following him. It's easy when you are a higher level. I was 11 on all classes
i managed to Cheese through this Mission. Had Selvaria Trapped Between the Edelweiss so every turn its was on the Enemy Tank that Moved was piss easy after that. But trying to do this Mission was legit the bane of my Existence bloody Hated it.

I was so close to beating this I just needed a few more hits on blowing up the tank and then it all came crashing down by getting 1 shot. I did not know grenades were effective against the generators I've just been getting my half blind lancer units destroying them.
Took me about 2 hrs to beat this mission along with millions of saves every single thing i did, I finally finished it after trying many things and getting lucky ;---;

For this mission what level should all of the classes be about?
Right now for me I'm on this mission and all 5 classes for me are level 6. Is that too low for chapter 6?
If you want a fast kill on the boss get Lancers to 8 but otherwise lvl6 is fine.

As you go through the campaign just lvl what you can with a priority like Scouts > Shockies > Lancers > Snipers > Engies
I've just moved house and using a crappy 3G dongle until my new net connection is good to go which could take 2 weeks. So I'll be on and off for a bit.
I beat this with lots of lancers. With lancers you can save 1 command point when you destroy the tank at the start and I put a lot of lancers to the part where you have to destroy the tank. It saves command points too.
I use the tank for the turrets, lancers after they were gone, tank survives machine gun fire way easier
this mission wasn't bad at all...as long as you know to destroy the left radiator first...cause selvaria just stays there on the left side.

I just hit the huge tank without any skill using the anti tank shells and I am doing the same damage, unless you are damage it's nothing waste of CP.
how do you get so many order points?
+Toriel Deploy Rosie/Largo/Alicia for extra CP. Unused CP is kept for the next turn. Due to the nature of this level you do a lot of nothing and max out your CP easily.
oooooooooooooooooooohh, i thought it was weird how you just kinda ended turns a bit early without at lest filling them out. had no idea that that was even a concept (does the game ever cover it?)
Also i'm still a bit stuck on this one, exactly how much leveling should i do, i have everyone at lvl 6, lancers at 8. a fully upgraded tank (at least every slot is full) and fully upgraded gear, am i more than ready to face it or should i push a bit more with level?
yeah i just kinda drove the tank up the hill to be ready for valkyre girl to appear, and 1 shotted all of her guys (apart from lancer) With my improved demolition morter then just kinda killed the tank normally
Somehow my Catherine hit all her shots when you missed them except she died after, moved too far forward -_-
Like seriously, I lost three members in this level... But no where near as bad to the point I had to watch a video or reset a few dozen times. When the last radiator finally got exposed, I had 20 CP- 20 fucking CP. I kept using them on one engineer, trying to get him over to the exposed generator but stop moving as soon as Selvaria was going to intercept fire. And when I did, I spammed my tank's anti-armor rounds.
