I got some stale, old beans that I had serious difficulty "dialing" in with my barista express, (of course the grinder is not the best and there are better, but it can work OK with good beans In my experience), no matter how much I played with grind size, amount, and tamping, I just couldn't get high enough pressure at all. I decided to put in a dual wall/pressurized basket in, and WOW! Great pressure! Surely not the best espresso in the world, but I could absolutely, ABSOLUTELY, taste a difference, it was actually pretty good! Now I know what I can do with subpar beans, Hope is not lost!
Thats the same problem that i was having when i used mass produced beans ie Dunkin donuts etc. And the pressurized basket really did solve it. Only when i use fresh, locally and freshly roasted beans can i use the single wall.

Thanks for taking the time to share. I just purchased a Breville machine to replace an automated machine and was having difficulty in getting the extraction correct despite many attempts. Cheers Alex Australia
Your channel has been really helpful. Its a very expensive machine and when I bought it I watched a lot of videos which made me feel inadequate because I couldn't follow everything they were doing or saying. Thanks for such clear and concise tips and instructions.
I have the barista touch and I do agree, the single wall is a lot smoother. I called the customer service and they said any beans past the roasting date of 20 days it’s recommended they use the double wall. But I love the single wall.
The double wall filters are used to turn old coffee into a halfway decent shot with faked crema. The Crema is a sign of freshness due to the presence of CO2. When you have pre-ground or old coffee that’s been completely depleted of CO2 getting Crema extracted can be a huge challenge. That’s where the double walled filter comes into play. Not sure why Breville provides one as there is a built in grinder but I guess it’s in case you have pre-ground our old coffee.
I went to Italy 🇮🇹 last year with my best friend, we went to a different cafe on a daily basis, and one thing every cafe had in common was the way they prepared and served our espresso. We ordered double shot espressos - after they extracted the shot, they would skim off most, not all of the crema, and gently stir. They then served us our espressos with a small glass of sparkling water and told us to take a sip of water to cleanse the palette, then enjoy your espresso - taking little sips of water in between. I now do the exact same thing at home whenever I enjoy a delicious espresso.
I find with the pressurised basket you have to do much less work dialling in the optimum settings. You do get a crema but it’s very foamy. With the non-pressurised you have to get the settings spot on to extract at sufficient pressure and you get an extremely good, silky crema when you get it right
Is it all about the crema? Basically, is it accurate to say if you nail the crema, you nailed the espresso taste(bitter vs sour, aka over vs under extracted)? I bought my Bambino on January 19 and only started to transition to the non-pressurized basket 2 days ago.
What a good idea, Hoon, to compare the two types, because no one else seemed to be concerned enough to tell us why two wall is needed. Actually you didn't say why they made a double wall either, but it's good to know you tasted a difference, and I have a single wall, so I'm happy. Ha! Ha!
For the pressurized basket, I’ve found a slightly less finely ground coffee works better. I’m awaiting the arrival of a new grinder, but for now have determined that I can’t currently grind finely enough for espresso in a non pressurized basket, but when I use the same coffee in a pressurized one, it’s too fine. A slightly coarser grind gives more Crema and less bitterness.
Thank you so very much for taking the time to share what you've learned on this journey with the rest of us. Thanks to your wonderful videos we were able to make an educated decision about the proper machine (in our case Barista Pro) and after 3 decent tasting but imperfect shots we got it dialed in nicely. useful info above. I have the same question, because I have an espresso machine that to me seems calibrated for double shot 58mm with 20g of coffee. Everytime I change anything, using less gram of coffee, or using single basket, the pressure will go down to 3-5 bar, every damn time and the water can reach 90-100 gram in 25s. I prefer making single shot and make another fresh one if I still want more for the day, because I hate coffee+milk that's being left too long, even in the fridge. But since the machine can't seem to produce 30ml/g shot using standard single shot basket, I'm thinking about getting a PRESSURIZED one to cheat the pressure.
The double wall also requires dialing in. I find that a pressurized setup requires a much courser grind. This is likely why it tastes more bitter in your test. I have the Saeco pressurized machine and I'm wondering if its worth upgrading: grinder and portafilter. Its an expensive proposition for what? More trouble and the same taste?

Hello, I am new to the Breville Barista Express. My doubt is which basket I should use(single wall or double wall) for my coffee grounded by my Barista Express?
Question to Mr Hoon: When I use single wall I hardly get any pressure. The pressure dial hardly moves up no matter what I tried: changed the grind size between 1-3, used the freshest beans, tamped pretty strongly but nothing works. Does that mean the pressure valve is faulty. I do get good pressure (10-12) when I use the double wall. I hope you can suggest me what to do
Me too!! But only happens when I use single wall for double shot. Single shot works fine, but the single wall double shot basket never gives me the right pressure, it barely moves. I adjust everything, grind size between 1 and 5, beans and tamped it very hard or light. I wasted two bags of beans on this so I ended up using the double wall
you found him. I didn't even know until weeks later one of my viewer mentioned to me my son was in the video. Some how I missed during the editing process.
What kind of pressure should you expect from a pressurized basket with preground coarse coffee? Is 2-4 bars ok or does that sound too low for pressurized/double walled?
my Breville 860xl-I’ve descaled it, cleaned it out following the manual guidelines however, still randomly serves up a very foamy bubbly crema. Some extractions are nearly all crema. I’ve experimented with settings and please note it’s random. I’ve changed the roasted bean suppliers, grind settings and coffee proportions. My preference is a dual wall, double shot. The instruction manual says to set the grind to “dual wall” . I have tried dual wall, 8, and 14. Once again note it’s random. Sometimes I’ll get two or three perfect shots and then 3-4 really foamy, bubbly shots. Have you experienced a similar occurrence or can you offer any ideas on ideal settings? Cheers. Note the Foamy crema makes it difficult to add some milk artwork. The taste is ok.
For a diligent person to have random shots, one thing to try / very common is: to TAP a few times pre-TAMP; so make sure the grind settles without air pockets
Hi Hoon. Thanks for your informative videos. I have just bought a barista express, and when I do the trick of checking pressure with the pressurized filter basket without any coffee in it, I experience a large amount of water being left in the filter after the pull. Do you have any idea how I can sort this out? Also my puck gets very wet so I get the feeling something may be wrong.
Thanks for the video. Again I love it. Would it be better to use the pressurized on store bought coffee beans and use the non pressurized on the good coffee beans?
Hi, can you compare to the way the coffee tasted in the pressurized portafilter as compared to a superautomatic? I had a superautomatic, and I returned it because I was not happy with the espresso shots. I just want to see how bad it is as compared to the Breville.
Thanks for the video very nice to know I was confused too which one is better.. hi hoon..any advice where can i purchase to get pressurize basket?i'm plan to replace my non-pressurize because i normally using normal ground coffee (pre ground pack)..really appreciate your advice for beginner like me..thanks again
Can somebody explain, If the unpressurized one tastes better and smoother than the pressurized one, why don't we just keep using the single wall filter? is there a specific scenario that we would definitely go double wall than single wall? Expresso newbie here :) thanks for answering.
Nice video. I have Bambino plus and I use pressurized buskets. What could be the reason that after extraction my cofee puck stuck to the busket and ejecting from the basket is not so easy as yours? On the other hand I use 17-18 gram doze but my extraction time is only 23 seconds.
@@HoonsCoffee Thanks. I startedt to use pressurized buskets because when I used non presusurized uually I had wet cofee puck, water on cofee puck or my coffe puck was sucked onto the group/shower. It was practically happening with different espresso grinder settings (4-15). Later, a representative of the manufacturer informed me that my model Bambino plus works better (was desiigned) on pressurized buskets.
Hi folks, I finally want to start using single wall filter baskets please tell me which setting are u using. I now have grind amount on 3 o clock and grind size on 5 and it starts getting pressure, but crema isn’t satisfying. Please let me know which setting you’re using for normal coffe beans ( not freshly roasted from local coffe store). Thank you guys.
Would it be possible for you to explain how to unclog the pressurized baskets? i use the exact same machine as you. I recently bought a new kind of coffee and it completely clogged my 2-dose pressurized basket and i can't even try to poke throught the holes with the tool because of the 2 layers in the basket. I have also tried using fire as some have suggested online but that also has not helped. Thank you!
Any ultrasonic cleaner should help with that. I got a cheap one from harbor freight and simple green cleaner. It takes a bit to unclog, but it does help. Trying to poke is asking for trouble. It also gets coffee stains off the basket.
You say I should do a test every morning if using non pressurized basket? I just can't afford to "waste" coffee beans dialing in the correct settings. I guess I will stay with the pressurized basket if the testing is required to get a good espresso
But when I use the single filter basket, I dont get the pressure gaurge to move at all, I noticed his does though. I used fresh beans to grind, the instructions said it should use single filter basket, but when there is no pressure I thought I did sth wrong. Thanks for making the video anyway.
@Mike James Mike I will use that saying on my "portafilter wall wars" with the wife...she is still OK with the taste because all that milk hides the sub-par flavor.
Hey Hoon. When using the pressurised basket, does the portafilter spray out any coffee? I have a massive case of it spraying out from the portafilter/group head - is this normal?
With single wall, the basket has to be full to the top for me to get the correct pressure but that is about 22 grams grind for double shot. If I tamp lower than the top, the pressure is too low
Hoon's Coffee pressure is good. The machine builds pressure with both baskets. But the pressure is not ablento escape thrubthe pressurized basket. But I don’t see the “ hole “ in the pressurized basketbto clean it.
Hi Hoon, I thought dual walls were for pre ground coffee? I am using single wall filter baskets but not having success at all. Down to grind 1, drip, drip 40 secs ..
Thank you so much for the comment! Have you had a chance to check out my other video? "3 things I hate about Breville Barista Express!" For the price this is a fantastic machine for you but if you like to make more than one latte in the morning you might frustrated with steam power. Also the grind setting is limited as well. Are you a serious coffee drinker?
Hoon's Coffee sorry I didn’t see these videos until after I replied. I did watch them though, overall it seems great other than the steam wand. In saying that though it doesn’t seem much different to what I have been using and maybe will offer better texture of the milk. I like to think I’m a serious coffee drinker lol
Hoon's Coffee I haven’t got that type of money to spend unfortunately. But the breville pro version may seem to make the difference with the steam time.
Hi Hoon, I have the same machine and i can’t develop pressure with the single wall filters, no matter what I do, beans, grinding settings, tamping pressure. i have even changed the settings in the top grinder from 6 to 4 and no pressure whatsoever. Any recommendation? Best.
I’m not able to get the needle to the “espresso zone” when I’m using the non pressurized. I’m using Lavazza super crema, grind setting at 6-7, super sour. Fast flow And needle usually don’t move
Hoon's Coffee inside is 6 now changed to 5 and side burr 6-7 now changed to 3. Pressure Needle did moved up a needle but still does not hit the espresso pressure zone. Very quick flow still. I don’t understand why this is happening. Same bean same machine as yours
Hello and thanks for the video ! I have the same machine but different brand. Mine is called Gastroback. I have a question...my griender has a dual wall setting before the 1-16 grinding options. should i grind my beans at the dual wall grinding setting or try the numbers? Thank you in advance, Alexis J
Grinder is based on time dosing so if double basket is let's say grind it for 10 secs single only goes to 5 secs. Unfortunately, this is something you have to play with settings.
@@HoonsCoffee hello and thank you for the reply, i think i didn't make myself clear. What i meant is that i dont know how fine or coarse (1-16 setting) to set my grinder when i use the dual wall filter. There grinding option starts from fine=1 up to coarse=16. Having said that there is a grinding option for dual wall as well just before the number 1.

For the pressurized basket, I’ve found a slightly less finely ground coffee works better. I’m awaiting the arrival of a new grinder, but for now have determined that I can’t currently grind finely enough for espresso in a non pressurized basket, but when I use the same coffee in a pressurized one, it’s too fine. you found him.
What kind of beans are you using it now?
Hoon's Coffee . 100% arabica beans this time . I’ve experimented with various beans. Would you mind hooking up and watching on video?
For a diligent person to have random shots, one thing to try / very common is: to TAP a few times pre-TAMP; so make sure the grind settles without air pockets
Thanks. This was helpful
Glad it helped!
Thank you for explaining it!!!
Thanks for not yelling at your son.
Your grind may be too fine.
Thanks for the video. Again I love it. Would it be better to use the pressurized on store bought coffee beans and use the non pressurized on the good coffee beans?
Great suggestion!
Thank you so much. That was really helpful
I’m just finishing my brevile dou temp
I refinish whole coffee machine by polishing stainless steel all around changing pump
And including polishing baskets as well to have nice little espresso for me.
I’ll try single wall maybe crema is better?
Alan H
Make sure use freshly roasted coffee.
@@HoonsCoffee
Hi
Thanks for reply hoon I definitely do even I use my method grid beans and I bought sealed coffee container with spoon built in lid and I put in freezer this is quick efficient way for me to have coffee ready in hurry.
My ulka pump is coming today and will get espresso going and fixed the leak..
I think Breville dou temp is good espresso for sure step up from my cafe Roma which I’ll give to my mother to have to start with.

hi hoon..any advice where can i purchase to get pressurize basket?i'm plan to replace my non-pressurize because i normally using normal ground coffee (pre ground pack)..really appreciate your advice for beginner like me..thanks again
Here is link to Breville www.breville.com/us/en/products/espresso/parts-accessories.BES870.html
Can somebody explain, If the unpressurized one tastes better and smoother than the pressurized one, why don't we just keep using the single wall filter? is there a specific scenario that we would definitely go double wall than single wall? Expresso newbie here :) thanks for answering.
When your grinder couldn’t grin fine enough, I.e water flow too fast. You use pressurised.
Minute 5:24 I see the secret behind the machines 😂😂😂
Nice video. I have Bambino plus and I use pressurized buskets. What could be the reason that after extraction my cofee puck stuck to the busket and ejecting from the basket is not so easy as yours? On the other hand I use 17-18 gram doze but my extraction time is only 23 seconds.
it does that with pressurized basket all the time.
@@HoonsCoffee Thanks. I startedt to use pressurized buskets because when I used non presusurized uually I had wet cofee puck, water on cofee puck or my coffe puck was sucked onto the group/shower.
It was practically happening with different espresso grinder settings (4-15).
Later, a representative of the manufacturer informed me that my model Bambino plus works better (was desiigned) on pressurized buskets.
i agreed!!!!
Your boy coming rocking just underwear in is just adorable.
What if I don't use any basket? I am trying to do my first one, but forget add a basket and put directly

Your son’s face 😂 sneaking past.
But when I use the single filter basket, I dont get the pressure gaurge to move at all, I noticed his does though.
I used fresh beans to grind, the instructions said it should use single filter basket, but when there is no pressure I thought I did sth wrong.
Thanks for making the video anyway.
Literally having the same issue! Let me know if you find a fix
I actually use the double wall basket - avoids fiddling with the grind size
Perfect!
@Mike James Mike I will use that saying on my "portafilter wall wars" with the wife...she is still OK with the taste because all that milk hides the sub-par flavor.
should have test if the % strength is the same or if it's just too strong with pressure. There could be lots of factor that lead to the taste
Hey Hoon. When using the pressurised basket, does the portafilter spray out any coffee? I have a massive case of it spraying out from the portafilter/group head - is this normal?
Sounds like you might need to replace your group head gasket. Here is the video how to do it. ruclips.net/video/Yx54WTgRNqY/видео.html
Hoon's Coffee will give it a go - thank you!
@@adilzulfiqar9825 Get it from Breville not from Amazon.
Hoon's Coffee thanks for the advice again!!
Hello mr.Hoon do you keeping plastic which is in portafilter? Thank you
I know some people take it out but I just leave mine in there.
With single wall, the basket has to be full to the top for me to get the correct pressure but that is about 22 grams grind for double shot. If I tamp lower than the top, the pressure is too low
Hoon how are you? No coffee comes out of my machine with the pressurized basket. But when using the unpressurized the coffee comes out. Any tips?
How's the pressure on non-pressurized basket?
Hoon's Coffee pressure is good. The machine builds pressure with both baskets. But the pressure is not ablento escape thrubthe pressurized basket. But I don’t see the “ hole “ in the pressurized basketbto clean it.
@@aross924 That hold is really tiny and hard to see it.
Hoon's Coffee thank you. Yeah seems like it was clogged. I might have to just use the unpressurized backet. Ty
Hi Hoon, can i use single wall filter then use 2 cups?
You mean single basket? You could but it is going to be weak sour espresso
Have you tried any 3 hole wand tip on barista express? Do you have any recommendation?
Stay with 1 hole steam tip. Better steaming with it than 3.
Hi Hoon, I thought dual walls were for pre ground coffee?
I am using single wall filter baskets but not having success at all. Down to grind 1, drip, drip 40 secs ..
Change you're grinder setting at 7 and pull the shot. If runs too fast go down to 5 and see what happens.
@@HoonsCoffee I am so frustrated trying to use single wall - at finest grind but it doesn't even register on the pressure thing....
Todd Fatland I got the same issue.
WHAT IS YOUR INTERNAL GRIND SIZE IN BURR GRINDER SET AT?
Thanks for the video, are you happy with the breville machine? My delonghi has started having issues and considering this option.
If I have the boatload of money I go with Linea Mini.
Hoon's Coffee I haven’t got that type of money to spend unfortunately. But the breville pro version may seem to make the difference with the steam time.
I think it’s worth the price I make lattes a lot and the steam power is really good in my opinion
Great video but even more adorable son!
What is the grind size you use? I always end up under extracting with the single wall basket.
Change you inner burr setting to finer.
Hi Hoon, I have the same machine and i can’t develop pressure with the single wall filters, no matter what I do, beans, grinding settings, tamping pressure. i have even changed the settings in the top grinder from 6 to 4 and no pressure whatsoever. Any recommendation?
Best.
What kind of beans are you using it now. Sounds like to it is the "coffee bean".
I’m not able to get the needle to the “espresso zone” when I’m using the non pressurized. I’m using Lavazza super crema, grind setting at 6-7, super sour. Fast flow And needle usually don’t move
What is your current grind size ?
Hoon's Coffee inside is 6 now changed to 5 and side burr 6-7 now changed to 3. Pressure Needle did moved up a needle but still does not hit the espresso pressure zone. Very quick flow still. I don’t understand why this is happening. Same bean same machine as yours
@@jeluc8999 tamp harder. If you're using the same band and the same ground size, you're probably not tamping hard enough.
Hello and thanks for the video !
I have the same machine but different brand. Mine is called Gastroback.
I have a question...my griender has a dual wall setting before the 1-16 grinding options.
should i grind my beans at the dual wall grinding setting or try the numbers?
Thank you in advance,
Alexis J
Grinder is based on time dosing so if double basket is let's say grind it for 10 secs single only goes to 5 secs. Unfortunately, this is something you have to play with settings.
@@HoonsCoffee hello and thank you for the reply, i think i didn't make myself clear. What i meant is that i dont know how fine or coarse (1-16 setting) to set my grinder when i use the dual wall filter. There grinding option starts from fine=1 up to coarse=16. Having said that there is a grinding option for dual wall as well just before the number 1.
@@ΑλέξηςΤζεϊράνης Dual wall means pressurized basket so set the grinder at 8
@@HoonsCoffee on to it.
Will get back at you with updates!
Thank you for your time :)
I have had this machine for 7 years. This is the first time i had a decent coffee (cold espresso. Freddo espresso) 8 is about right. The taste is not bitter any more. Thank you again!

Hi Hoon,
I noticed that the pressurized basket dose out is higher than the non-pressurized basket. Correct?
Also, what is the brew time based on this experiment?
what is pressurize and what is unpressurized
Hey Hoon, can u show the pics for non pressurised n pressurised basket?
