    I'm just a fresh graduate at his first job and I could be wrong about the helicoils, but:
    I work at a small machine/manufacturing shop and I had the same question about the helicoils and the answers that i got from my boss: if the substrate is aluminum, usually those threads dont last as long as other metals, so people design it for helicoils to add thread strength to an area that would require great amounts of torque or areas that could possibly see a lot of assembly and disassembly. Side note I thought was interesting: nickel alloy helicoils are sometimes used to prevent a steel bolt potentially welding itself to a regular steel helicoil.
    Great content man, and thanks for the poster sale, was awesome being able to see the shop in person when i picked it up!

      Hey thank you for the awesome comment and insight. Yes I imagine a higher grade helicoil would change things. Interesting many engine parts such as aluminum blocks are not helicoiled from the factory.

    That LEEN adapter is the last version, designed to fit either gearbox case - J160 case is a bit larger then the S15/RX8/Miata case. That is why you have two bolt patterns. Joe (owner, designer) believed it (last version of the adapter) might also fit the FRS transmission, but he never got around to it before he moved on. My involvement in an AZ6 adapter actually predates the LEEN

      Ok wow if people knew this might fit the FRS Trans I would say this is a better option than the IMPLUSE Adapter. You are a legend sir!

    Very informative, thanks for sharing your findings!
    I do have a question about the interchangeability of gears in the aisen az6/ j160/mazda/nissan and the subaru/toyota TL70 variants. I've been trying for years to find out if there's a way to use different ratio 1st and 3rd gears to make a budget trd close ratio j160. I have seen that you can make one pretty close if you mix and match gears out of the different az6/tl70 boxes but there would be no way to tell unless you pulled them all apart like this. Don't suppose you have any thoughts on it?

    • @CMAutohaus
      @CMAutohaus  11 месяцев назад +1

      J160 and TL70 gearsets only 6th gear is interchangeable. Even with RX8 and S15 variants there are differences with 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear IIRC

    • @ryanlawson5768
      @ryanlawson5768 11 месяцев назад

      @@CMAutohaus Ahh damn that sucks, so if you wanted to try and make more close ratio j160 by changing 1st and 3rd you’d probably have to have something custom made? From the research I’ve done there doesn’t seem to be any other way around it 😭. Appreciate the reply man 🙏

      No I have not tested those S15 items, BUT notable, CBY in Japan looks to be modifying TL70 syncros to fit the J160; converting gears to muti-piece synchros and adapting carbon fiber TL70 synchros

    With the interchangeability of some J160/TL70 components, I can't help but wonder if the .767 TL70 6th gear set would fit the J160 as an alternative to the S15 6th swap. Any idea if this is possible?

    • @CMAutohaus
      @CMAutohaus  Год назад +1

      Yes thank you for bringing this us and I am shocked this has not dawned on me. But I am 90% sure the TL70 6th gearset will work. I actually recently had an issue with fitment on a Silvia 6th gear on an Altezza shaft, so I may switch to TL70 6th gearsets from now on if I find they work

      @@UntappedGarage On a J160 rebuild last week I found Silvia 6th main gear (the smaller one) there is a raised "step" in the ID making the ID smaller in that part vs the J160 6th gear.
      Long story short I cracked the mainshaft trying to press on 6th - I've installed at least 10 6th gearsets and this is the first time this happened. Extremely frustrating because: I have to call the customer and tell him the bad news why his trans will be delayed for race season, I have to eat the cost of the mainshaft plus WPC/Cyro treatment again, burned an entire shop day with this 6th gear fiasco.
      It been a tough week at the shop to say the least

    • @UntappedGarage
      @UntappedGarage Год назад

      @@CMAutohaus That sucks for sure!
      WPC and cryo treatment are both non-dimensional, right? Do all S15 main 6th gear have that step? Either way, it would be excellent if the TL70 swap ends up working.

    Ok, I might have missed this or I am looking in the wrong place. I have a RX8 with the typical bad 2-3 and 4-5 syncros. I found FRS/BRZ syncro sets for ~299 USD but RX8 sets are crazy expensive. Are they interchangable? Would a FRS/BRZ syncro set fit into the RX8 being they are both Aisin AZ6? TY.

    • @CMAutohaus
      @CMAutohaus  10 месяцев назад

      Only the RX8 is an AZ6, the TL70 in the FRS is based on thr same desgin, but interally has many differences. Most synchros will not be compatible.
