- This property is privately owned and not open to the public. Stewart is a remote town with many vacant buildings, but they are not all “abandoned”. Lets all please be respectful of this fact and of the property owners. Myself included.
Stewart is such a beautiful place, and the entire area is dense with very interesting history. This small little mountain town, which is now almost considered a ghost town, was not always this way. At its hight, Stewart had a population of more than 10,000 residents, and today less than 500. The pattern of boom and bust has left much of this town vacant or abandoned entirely. I hadnt actually ventured around the rural area of this town, until there was a missing dog situation. I hopped on the Gnarley Davidson to help look for the dog, and along the way found all of these abandoned apartments and townhouses. This was a very neat surprise to find, and I hope that you all enjoy it as well.

We also climbed up those stairs and sat on top of that big tank, this brings my friend back to life. Thanks for this. I miss her. We had the best childhood anyone could ask for. Booting around on our bikes.
I lived across from those units along Yukon ave, was used by the miners who worked at Premier gold mine back in the 80's. As always Dustin love your adventures.

I remember when all those townhouses were filled in the 80s with people and climbing up those stairs were amazing. As a child/teen in the 90s we would explore the adanonded townhouses as well. Great Channel Dustin!

@@tashasmith6179 like many boom and bust towns all over this world. The viable business in the area goes bust for any number of reasons and people move away.
As a kid, in 1977/78, I went with the swim clubs from Kitimat and Terrace to Stewart to have a demonstration swim meet. The town was wanting to form a swim club. We had an amazing time. I remember staying in a home that had been owned by one of the Stewart brothers. Great little town, with amazing people!
What's really sad about this is a he cost of rent in some places people can't afford to have a home :( when places like this are abandoned until it basically rots back into the earth.
I was thinking the same thing, so many who can't afford to even live and homes in such a beautiful location just rotting away.
Lots of people don't want to live somewhere. They have to drive at least 3 hours to buy groceries.
Yeah they are viable buildings but they aren't viable communities. Groceries, medical, fire, telecommunications services are hours away. These aren't skill sets a lot of homeless can effect6bring to the table for running a community.

It’s out in the middle of nowhere. There isn’t anything viable to support the community. Hence why it’s abandoned. Go start a business out there. It’s a naive pipe dream.

Always a great day when Dustin uploads a new video. Great exploration and I just want to say I've always loved your motto! "Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints." I wish more adventurers and urbexers followed that motto.
A few years back I saw the townhouses I grew up in in Revelstoke in a similar condition. It's... rough, to see places that used to be full of memories, now just a memory itself.

Aww man I don’t remember that area. They all have carports to keep the vehicles out of the billion feet of snow ❄️ they get every year. The mine my dad worked at closed when we moved. ‘84? ‘83? 🤷🏽♀️ did you get any footage of the townsite mining houses? We lived on Raven St I believe. First house on the left when you start down it. As kids we loved all the snow & played for hours n hours in the huge mounds of snow aka slides the plows made. Gonna have to go back up once you can cross the boarder. I’ve seen recent pics of the old mines & glaciers so wanting to go back for a visit. It’s a lot like Bella Coola but not eh. Anyways thanks for sharing & looking forward to the next one! 💕👊🏽

What would be really cool is if you could come up with photos of some of these places, before they went to ruin... Anybody who can share photos should, would be so cool to see how they use to look.
That is Kitsault, B.C. they do have other videos AFTER abandoning when they had a caretaker keeping up the place. It must have been just over these last few yrs that it's been unkept

Climbing that LAST ladder- you know, the one up the tank itself??....Yea, THAT gave me the heebie jeebies! In my previous life one of my jobs was to climb oil storage tanks to gauge them for deliveries- to make sure a load would fit. One night I darn near didn't make it . Slippery icy metal rungs.....yea, thanks for the memory Dustin!!
Cool, I didn't even see this when I was up there! I guess work got in the way... Funny you kept mentioning the broken windows - there's actually a concept in criminology that is called, wait for it, broken windows theory. Basically, one broken window left unrepaired leads to more and more.
Interesting. I actually watch another channel called that and didn’t know what it meant. They’re in Germany I think.

There seems to be sound psychology behind that theory. There may also have been testing along the same line where if an area is already litter strewn then people are more likely to litter than they would if the area is clean.
I was talking to a lady who grew up there in the 60s, and she said that when they moved into their place in January, there was snow piled as high as the roof in the lots on either side. When Spring came and the snow melted, there were houses on both lots. With that much snow, if it’s not cleared as it falls, it could push through the windows.

All these abandoned places...it's really sad. To think that people once lived, loved and did and experienced all the other things humans do and are subjected to in their short time here on earth. Just sad. And intriguing. History as it happens. Not the type of history that will make it into books or to the box-office and big screen but nicely documented and preserved on your channel. Thanks 😊

Oh, it's British Columbia, Canada. Saw it at the end of your video. I feel such a kinship with Canada, since my father was born in Sydney Mines, Nova Scotia in 1918.
Thank you Dustin from all of us who will never be able to venture and adventure but will travel along with you in spirit. Stay safe. Another thing I have to mention is that old tanks such as the one in your video rust out the top lids and you can very easily fall through the rusted metal. Take it from one who has been there.
Many years ago, we were living in Smithers where my husband was posted with the RCMP. We were being transferred to Stewart and went up there for a few days to give the current member there a few days off. While we were there, we noticed all of these A-frame homes for sale. We found out you could go to the grocery store in town for a list and the keys if you were interested in buying any. So, we went on a little looky look. Many of them were coated in mould. Some had been modified by previous tenants. Pretty much all of them were in bad shape. Not sure what happened to them, if they sold any or if they fell down, got torn down, or maybe they are still standing there waiting for some love. Our transfer ended up taking us to Dease Lake instead, so we never got to live in Stewart.
I lived in one of the red/brown townhouses on an end unit as a kid. It was a super cool place to live.

Yes there are townhouse type apartments with 2 floors. It's a choice of floorplan, especially when there are multiple bedrooms. My old apartment complex has them. I stayed in one when we first moved to NC for my dad's job. Looks to me like the buildings have metal roofs, which would preserve a vacant building's interior better than asphalt shingles over time, so that's why the interior of that apartment was in relatively decent shape.

At 13:07 that big rubber thing was a flood barrier. They work like sandbag barriers, but you can put them up fast enough in an emergency to actually save things. Pretty cheap way to make a water tight wall, super fast&you can recover them.

those electric meters are relatively speaking newer. Being they are the digital display models not the older rotating meter boxes from the 1980's or older.

Your heart is in the right place but you are completely wrong. Fact is many homeless are there my choice and also mental illness. Besides on a more heartless note is that giving a person a place to live when they have no skin in the game is they almost always destroy it. It just becomes a money pit that ruins it for others.

Yeah, things started going downhill when I left in '76. We were in the old part of town, this was considered the "new" section. A lot of the mining community scattered to other locations. We ended up on Grande Cache, AB from Stewart. Then back to BC.
If the last year and a half has taught us nothing else, it should be that close proximity isn't the necessity to employment that it used to be. Would be amazing if people started expanding back out and revitalizing communities like these and potentially start cooling down the insane real estate markets a little at the same time.
U do realize all that's available here is satellite internet. The cost to put in regular internet is cost Is prohibitive

Stewart was a mining town…most of the mines shut down in the 1980’s and 1990’s. There are several mining projects further North but those are remote from the original townsite.

When we lived there (74-78) we had snow up past the windows, had to shovel it so we could see out and let the light in…good times for sure, great memories. Yes we were Hyderized a few times back then🙏population was around 7000 then.

So, I just looked it up because I was curious: Mildew is always on the surface and is dry-looking, even powdery, and usually grays and whites. Mold can be on the surface too, but will also "burrow" and isn't always visible, and grows in flourishes or colonies, and is typically more slimy or fuzzy and is raised off the surface. Mildew is easy to clean but some types of mold'll kill ya. I grew up in Houston and experienced many floods due to hurricanes, so the toxic black mold issue is not a new topic to me, but I thought it might be interesting to mention the difference here. Although both can trigger negative health responses, the worst that's typically gonna happen from just the occasional touring of buildings might be an allergic reaction, if you're prone. Otherwise, probably nothing to worry about at all. (just in case anybody wants to go off on that whole "BuT yOuR hEaLtH!" tangent...it's not a big deal. relax.)
ha ha, great to know. I had a real estate agent who was super sensitive to mildew which seems like it could be rough but also kind of a plus for the buyers to know a place is too humid! XD
I like exploring abandoned places sometimes. I've been to the ghost town Monte Cristo here in Washington State a few times. really pretty up there.

Seems like a lovely place for a meth community to burn down and trash so perhaps it would be perfect for the homeless who live in tents, vehicles, and on sidewalks on taxpayers property.

You know, your comment is really bugging me. I live in the exurbs of Seattle but used to live in Coquitlam, BC before my husband was lured by a high paying tech job down here 25 years ago. Both of our urban areas are screaming for "affordable housing" and as Dustin snuck a peak into one of those apartments and I saw those still entirely usable electric appliances all I could think of was how many people would love to move into an entirely humble, well built and modest apartment or townhouse, using those secondhand appliances so they could get a leg up in this insane world. Maybe it's just not economically feasible and I'm a dreamer but the waste of resources up there is making me crazy!!
@@anna-lisagirling7424 I agree 100%. I looked up Stewart BC on Google Earth and it looked bigger than 500 residents. I think the overall condition of them was very good considering. You would never see that in the Seattle area. They would be destroyed and vandalized.. all while people live on the streets.

Definitely occupied within the last 10-15 years due to the smart metres, I wonder if the first building and maybe others still had power since 2 of the metres were still intact but the others were safety caped, you would only see that if the power was still on, you did mention there was a power outage in the area could explain the metres being out.
