So for the Deku Sub, what you could not know: Narrator Deku in sub sounds older on purpose, because it is future Deku talking.
They kinda didn’t do this in the dub unfortunately. But in the present time, when sub-Deku is talking, he does sound a lot younger which is pretty amazing voice acting.

Just to clarify the part where Deku is narrating how he jumped from 5% to 8% is supposed to be an OLDER Deku narrating what happened. MHA is supposed to be Deku telling the story on how he became the greatest hero. Hence why he sounds older in the sub during that point and if anything that actually shows the good range Deku has in the sub.
The tone he's using in that clip sounds like how he does in season 7 rn

It might be bc they watch the dub, but I don't think they understand Deku is constantly narrating the story from the perspective of his older self looking back, and THAT'S why he sounds older sometimes. For whatever reason Justin doesn't do that but it's how it's supposed to be

The dub is fine but yeah sub goes harder on the 1million percent in the dub you hear him take a breath and then he kind of rahs the rest of the punch but in the sub if they do take a breath they hide it much better sounds like one full take

I actually think MHA has one of the best dubs, but there are some moments that just don't quite hit like the sub. I watch both.

A lot of people have already said it, but the main difference in dub v sub Deku is the narration. Dub Deku just sounds like a more confident 16 year old version of himself. Sub Deku sounds like he's in his 20s, which makes a lot more sense, seeing as how this is supposed to be a future Deku recapping the story. Because the normies are so used to Future Deku and Current Deku sounding exactly the same, I don't think they ever really "got" that MHA is literally Deku telling this story to someone.
I think one moment that really showed how good Daiki's performance was is when shinso brainwashed deku to control his blackwhips, that scream left me with chills
Dude hear me out. A Kacchan version of this video would be EPIC. Imagine trying to compare and judge all of his various screams and yells. And his big emotional scenes too, like during Kacchan v Deku 2 and his apology. It would be so much fun!!!

This was really close, but if you want another MHA dub vs Sub challenge, you definetly have to do All Might, and ill give you 4 moments too
1. All Might talks about his injury upon meeting Deku and deflating, in episode two (sesson 1) or All Might after exiting his car when it gets attacked by thugs, when he talks to them, asking them to move so he can go to Deku who was attacked by Lady Nagant (season 6)
2. ALL might Vs the USJ Nomu fight (season 1)
3. United States of Smaaaaaaaash , bits from the All Might vs All for One fight (season 3)
4. That moment qhen he tries to give the food to dark Deku the altter lleaves and All Might falls to the ground (season 6)
or s1ep2, telling Deku he can become a hero.

All Might in the dub actually convinced me Sabat was phoning it in at times and just coasting considering some of his roles in the past its pretty clear he can bring more to the table

mha dub is legit amazing, not just the voices but the different lines, my fav is when all might is fighting all for one and shows the world his weak form, when endeavour shows up and loses it seeing him like that he says the line get up and show them why you are better and i get chills every time i hear it
So strange to me, sorry. I believe every changed line is a bad thing by definition, no matter how cool it is. It replaces original true words that author created for the moment just because someone decided they know better. Sometimes dub version just adds small things for flavor, but sometimes it censors out whole phrases, or (like in Valkyria Chronicles games) transforms a single word that one character says to another into a sentence. Really, hero gently whispers a name, and English translation shoves in something like "Hello, how are you, I'm so glad to see you safe!" - as if audience can't understand affection and relief from one word... And in my country translators of Rurouni Kenshin (Samurai X) just outright changed a gender of one crossdressing character, turning them into girl in phrases of others. So it can't be good to have different lines, it's always scary and annoying sign that localizers allow themselves too much, and you might not even know the real story and characters anymore. Don't know why you like someone messing with your story just because their version occasionally sounds good...

Its easier to focus on dub, they might have trouble reading, they might be better at learning through hearing than reading etc. Most people do NOT care about stuff as deeply as you, and thats still okay. Dubs have their place in the industry, as of course do subs.

@@Uaroth These changes are absolutely good decisions and overall make certain scenes much more fitting to the story. It's so pathetic how you think a mangaka has made the absolute best decision possible in every single scene and every line of dialogue, when most manga's have the most terrible, unnatural-sounding, and awkward dialogue that can easily elevate the scene if done properly by someone who takes time to think about it. Also, sub dialogue always suck soooo hard it's actually unbelievable how bad it is and how people unironically take it seriously, dub dialogue is always leagues superior.
Honestly, i prefer sub, but Dub deku is great
Bakugo - Him breaking down to Deku during their fight. (Bonus points any of Bakugos screams) Bakugo apologising to Deku. Bakugo declaring war. any Holistzer impact or Die.
Allmight - US of Smash scene. All might flipping out at AFO. All might breaking down after nana shimura reveal. All might speaking to AFO in the prison and how he will not die. All might crying for Deku after hes leaves him to be batman deku lol.
Shiggy - First season, any of his rants, defo the part where his voice changed after he got white hair(love how they did it in Dub) Shiggy calling for AFO after he tells Shiggy hes the future and the heros arrive to rescue Bakugo.
Bonus - (Can't think of as many stand oout scenes) Uraraka please make sure to do her screaming for Deku to come back to UA.

To give credit to the dub, there are moments I like from it. Like Shigaraki's awakening at the end of MVA. In the sub, there's a very slight change to his voice. Whereas in the dub, you can tell that he's using a completely different tone. And I like that. But on an overall level, I still much prefer the sub. Hiro Shimono and Koki Uchiyama bring Dabi and Shigaraki to life. And I love those two as villains so that's even better. Even though I don't like AFO overshadowing Tomura, I can't lie and say his JP VA isn't cooking either. Dub has some great moments but I just ultimately love sub more.
I agree with Chris because Deku as a character is a nerdy fan boy whose voice sounds like its powering through puberty lol. The sub makes him sound more badass but the dub sounds more realistic for him as a character imo

No because Deku is cool to me, so I want him to sound cool when he’s doing something badass. When he’s not fighting he doesn’t even sound like a badass, he has the softest most polite way of speaking to people. Sub Deku is a sweet unassuming guy who became a badass through his natural desire to be a hero. Dub Deku gives Deku a bad name, I guarantee most people who call Deku a beta loser have only heard the dub. I love Deku because he has the perfect underdog to overdog story.

omg i disgaree!!! i think the dub leaned wayyy too much into the nerdy dorky deku voice when he was always more soft spoken and shy. also the dialog makes him feel so different in the dub. idk, i feel like rana but with the sub instead of the dub, i just cannot see deku with his dub voice. it doesn't mesh well in my head
Nah, Sub has MORE range. Deku can be badass, but for the light hearted scenes (which they didn't have), he sounds like a softy. Daiki hits a wider spectrum of Deku, to show the range he has when he's in fight mode vs when he's not.
This is legitimately one of the only anime’s that sounds great in both sub and dub.

So I’m assuming your watching season 7 in sub is that correct?
To me, what differentiates between good and bad voice acting is feeling like I'm listening to an actual character rather than a voice actor. And when I listen to most english dubs, it makes me cringe because I feel like I'm listening to someone trying too hard to act a character. And for some reason, I dont get this feeling with the normal dubs. It's the same with watching english movies with popular actors, I cant separate the character from the actor.
you guys should look at bakugo
1. The narrator Deku sounds older BECAUSE HE'S NARRATING FROM THE FUTURE. God.
2. No matter how good the dub is, there are just too many mistrunslations going on in it that kill not only the intended meaning of certain lines, but also kill the connection between certain moments.

5:30 That's the point. Throughout the story an older Deku is narrating the story
So deku in the original source material is meant to be a lot more mature and more toned around being an adult in the making. I actually have a complaint about the dub sounding more childish than what it should. The anime already softens so much of the original manga thats supposed to be more mature and dark and bloody. Having deku sounding even more immature just adds onto that problem. I do think that the dub for Deku is good but it just isn't a valid point to say its better being a childish and naive and wholesome voice cause Deku goes through a lot more graphic content than what the anime wants to allow in.

Tie (the yell hit harder subbed, but the overall feel hit in the dub)
Sub (I just didn't love the way he yelled her name the second time in sub)

The only thing i don't like about Deku's dub voice is the way he says "smash". He goes a bit too shrill and squawky with it for my taste (as opposed to the jp being more gritty) but other than that Justin does great

I also think you guys are also coming from a perspective where you are also biased with multiple seasons of dub voices to attach yourselves to instead of switching up between both. Everyone has a biased opinion though so its the same either way. Just from your guys perspective you are more attached to dub even if you try to be unbiased. Its something no one can control 100% of the time.

Regardless of which actor is technically better, Japanese just always sounds cooler to me. It's harder to take the fantastic plots as seriously when I hear them in English for some reason.

Maybe if they watched stuff in sub sometimes but you know they're all gonna pick dub overall when its what most are used to the dubs fine but it should be close sub wins easily unless you have bias
I've seen almost all of MHA in subbed on crunchy roll. I've seen one episode dubbed on HULU. So I am most used to subbed voice actors for all the characters
scene 1-Subbed (the way he yells out words is so impactful)
scene 2-tied (both did amazing job on this scene and music in background made this very impactful and one of the best MHA moments )
scene 3-Subbed (the internal monolog voice sounds better in japanese than english. When yells out state names sounds so cool )
scene 4-Dubbed (I love the pause and music shift, makes the english voice really stick out for me)
So in the ended Subbed won out for me but both did amazing job and I'm loving the new season of MHA (episode 1 of season 7 is officially out now)
This is an interesting one. I love both performances but to me the dub is Deku to me.
