- This is the story of how we made our first angel investment into the Y-Combinator startup Motion (YC W20) (AKA usemotion), all without having any YC access or traditional VC experience. You'll hear snippets of two recorded calls from 2021 with Motion's Co-Founder & CEO Harry Qi, and Victor Wang (Partner at HOF Capital), both of whom helped show us the ropes to the world of angel investing and VC.
This initial angel investment kicked into Motion 😉 our journey into the VC space-leading to 18 subsequent startup investments (in just the first year alone), 26 to-date. Beyond that, we probably won’t ever go into which stocks we have only because that’s an entirely different world (also keep in mind that we’re being substantially risky with startup investments, that we’re being safer with our other investments (think S&P500) or Titan if you’re in the US (efficient.link/r/titan). Outside of that, going more into advice on finances and stocks, well there’s tons of content creators sharing about this. We’re more so sharing this story for anyone interested in early stage startup investing as it goes hand-in-hand with our core business. We use a lot of software in our business (and across our customers), so if we see potential in something, it’s a fun way to get involved on a deeper level and share in more of the upside (or downside!) as they grow. That’s more our niche, if that makes sense?

I don't say this to be rude, but to be constructive: please get to the point a bit faster. I clicked on an hour long video expecting it to be full of valuable content. Instead you mostly ramble on for awhile, never really saying anything valuable. After the first 25 minutes, all you've shared is that you're excited to invest and you feel like the team is doing a good job. No nuggets of knowledge in there. Clicked away after that point, that's enough time wasted. From what I saw, this video could have been reduced to a RUclips short and conveyed the same amount of info.
Apologies for the expectation mis-match. To be fair, this was posted on RUclips, not TikTok or RUclips Shorts as we're telling a story, it's a podcast/mini-series. Curious as to if you have any interest in angel investing or if the topic just generally pulled you in?
The point to be had by the 25 minute mark is that if there's a company that you're interested in investing in, getting super involved, giving feedback, and support, will make you stand out and even get you the opportunity to invest.
That said, there's more to take from the episode, and we've broken up those snippets into RUclips Shorts we have been and will be posting on our channel. Maybe you can check those out and see if they are of more value?
