    I have a SBC 168 tooth ring gear on a SBC block. The starter I have seems to be binding because it is too close to the ring gear. I can't seem to be able to shim the starter out far enough to get the correct spacing. How can I tell how to order the correct starter that will match the 168 tooth ring gear? The easiest fix would be to change the starter as apposed to changing the ring gear. The starter I have has a staggered and straight mounting bolt pattern. Thanks for your advice.

      Changing the ring gear is not that much work i changed mine without pulling the trans just drop the drive line use really long bolts in place of the starter bolts to keep the trans good and straight move it back about 8 to 10 inches its easy from that point on takes about 3 hours without a car lift. put in the original starter after i rebuilt it works perfectly now no problem what so ever. After taking a few measurements and setting up a camera at the fltwheel when starting the car, I found that the flywheel wasn't straight and had too much runout. I returned the flywheel/ring gear back to the machine shop where I bought it.

      Watch a video on starter shiming it's out of position or incorrect starter

      I have a similar problem with my starter and ring gear diameter. It's on a small block chevy from the late 60's/early 70's. The ring gear is a 168 tooth and the starter I have has both staggered and straight mounting bolt holes. I can't shim the starter out far enough, so the starter gear has trouble retracting after the engine is started. I think the easiest thing to do is use a different starter that uses the staggered mount holes and has the correct clearance for a 168 tooth ring gear. If you have any fixes I would love to know what you did. Thanks

      @Daryl Voorhees I tried several starters, the small block chevy engine is so popular you would think they would be easy to find. I found one for my son's 1972 Chevy 350 truck but can't remember where my receipt is to buy one for my 75 Camaro 350 , I found out you have to get a staggered old Delco style starter in a hi torque mini starter.

      @@jonhsmith2706I don't recall exactly, but it might have been a mid 70's camaro. I researched on RockAuto website. Looked at several different year/make/models to get the right one. What year is the k1500 ? I would start with that (year/make/model). I hope that helps

    Starter is on opposite side on a 307, it's a different starter. You need a B.O.P starter

    How do you know how many teeth are on a flexplate

    • @midmonobody411
      @midmonobody411 5 лет назад

      I believe i solved the problem. The starter i had was 11 tooth and the flex apparently had a direct drive. Now no more binding or bottoming out.

      YOU COunt Them Start With The FIrst Tooth AND MARK IT AS 1 THEN COUNT THE REST TO 50 PUT A MARK AND GO AGAIN TO 50 . AND SO ON AND THEN ADD IT UP . EXZAMPLE 1 MARK 50 MARK 50 MARK 50 MARK 18 SO MINE WAS A 168 TEETH . AND TO MAKE SURE YOUR STARTER FITS MEASURE IN BETWREEN The teeth on the flex plate because i just rand in that problem bought a new 168 tooth flex plat for a 1994 gmc k1500 and i seen at amazone they had a 139 tooth flex plat for the 4l60e trans like mine . but auto parts stores dont sell the 139 they onley sell the 168 one . so im going to have to chang the gear on my starter or get a new one . so every thing will woork and line up on my 5.7 vortec. hope this helps .
