    A little fun fact for those who don't know, the piano in Soul of Cinder is actually the piano from Gwyn, Lord of Cinder form Dark Souls 1, and the main motif (what we call the plin plin plon) can also be heard in Nameless King's theme, as he's Gwyn's firstborn son

    The phase change at 10:17, in game, happens when Vordt reaches half health, dynamic music for the win. But you've likely seen it in various internet memes or videos on the internet.
    There's a famous video of a young boy who's on a TV show that likes chess, and the host says "I can't play you. We need someone of your skill level to play you, so please bring out a Grandmaster Chess Player", and people put this music over the shot of the chess player walking out, as if he were a video game boss. It also helped the meme that it then cuts back to the child who's just started crying, because if you're six, you would be terrified of a grandmaster chess player coming to whoop you on national TV.
    Love seeing you react to DS3's music though, it's some of the best in the series. Any chance we could see you reacting to the Astro Bot soundtrack in the future? It's an extremely whimsical platformer with some of the best music I heard last year ^^
    EDIT: Just got to your Nameless King reaction, absolutely blessed. The first half of the theme is a Phase 1 where the King rides atop a dragon, while the second half of the theme is a 1v1 duel against the King after you slay the dragon. That track, specifically, is by Motoi Sakuraba, who did the soundtrack for Dark Souls 1, as well as the Mario Sports games & my personal favourite gameboy advance games, Golden Sun. Would highly recommend - I'm not versed on music theory, but his compositions are absolutely insane.

The original final boss, the Pontiff, had it in the form of an alternate main theme for Dark Souls III. Which was preserved in the game files and which people got out of them. The story of the Nameless King is that hes the first born son of Gwyn, whose name has been removed from history after he betrayed his father and sided with the dragons. You find him at the top of a mountain, where he flies in, riding on top of the king of the storm, a dragon.

  • @alexanderbaynes9583
    @alexanderbaynes9583 15 дней назад +83

    Minor added context because this is my all-time favorite game:
    1. The Abyss Watchers' fight within themselves is also a fight against each other. They swear upon the blood of "the first wolf knight" to always fight the abyss, which is within themselves, causing them to mostly lose their minds. But they are undead, so they are endlessly killing each other and coming back repeatedly. They are lost in the bloodshed.
    2. Vordt is a knight controlled by a tyrant, far away, sent to distant areas for unknown ultimate purposes. Like all other knights of his order, he is constantly watched by the tyrant's eyes. Under the gaze of the tyrant, the knights all lose their humanity over time, becoming beasts, their armor fused to their hide. It's likely they've forgotten their purpose, and have become mere hunters.
    3. The Nameless King was once a god of war who fought against the first dragons when his family gained power, but his deific status was stripped from him "for his foolishness" after he allied himself with the dragons. Every trace of his existence was wiped away by his family, statues removed, histories rewritten, supporters killed or banished. Today, not even his name is known.
    4. Firelink Shrine is a place dedicated to sacrifice. It is your home base because your aim is to sacrifice yourself to continue the Age of Fire. This is where the undead and unkindled gather to strengthen themselves in their quests. The Fire Keeper is bound by the bonfire to serve the Shrine and serve you, turning souls into strength.
    5. The Soul of Cinder is not just every previous Lord of Cinder. A Lord of Cinder is one who has sacrificed themselves to the Age of Fire in the past, which is the more-or-less canon ending of the first Dark Souls. You are fighting yourself from Dark Souls 1, along with everyone else who completed the game.

      Number 5 is the reason Soul of Cinder is pretty much my favourite boss in the entire Eldensoulsborne series
      I absolutely love what they stand for. A defense mechanism, an amalgamation of everyone who ever fueled the First Flame with their very soul. The moment they switched their build from sword to sorcery to miracles to pyromancy, I knew this is it, the curtain call. At least from a narrative standpoint
      Also, they have backflips, Flame Within, and a freaking parry! The latter is such a rarity in the series. And it's better this way. To use it selectively, strategically. A boss who represents player characters from previous games would be incomplete without it. And the fact that they have it make them so, so special

    the Abyss Watchers are in a very sad state when you find them. sealed away in the entrence to a catacombs, floor littered with the dozens of bodies of their slain comrads. two yet remain, locked in combat with eachother, trying to kill the Abyss they sense in eachother. as one lands a final blow on te other, it turns to you and raises its sword and prepares for combat. as you fight, the undead bodies of the other Avyss watchers slowly rise and join the fight, one even fights the other Abyss watchers, seemingly on your side. once the last Watcher falls, the remaining embers in all the slain Watchers coalesce into one and the final Abyss Watcher rises, no emboldened by the dying embers, to battle you one last time.

    • @Nitrinoxus
      @Nitrinoxus 15 дней назад +5

      Honestly, the entire _world_ is in a sad state in _DS3._ But what's always made the Watchers stand out to me is that, even as corrupted as they've become, they remain true to their duty: *the Abyss **_cannot_** be allowed to escape.*
      They endlessly battle against one another to stop any one of them from letting the Abyss break free, trapping themselves in an endless cycle rather than risk failing in their sworn duty; none of the _other_ wayward Lords of Cinder bothered with their duties after getting called back, yet the Watchers refused to answer the call of the Firelink Shrine until their original task was complete.
      That's why I called them 'noble' in the description Em read out: *even when naught remains but duty, they carry that duty out until it's done.*

    I don’t know if you noticed it, but there is a moment where the piano motif falters (or “flickers”) slightly behind in tempo towards the end. They are even telling you with the music that the world just can’t keep going like this anymore. It’s tired. It wants to end.

    • @Nitrinoxus
      @Nitrinoxus 15 дней назад +2

      It lines up with the visuals of the First Flame across the entire series, too. If you choose to link the Fire in the first game, it's like you're setting off a _volcano_ for how much the Flame bursts back into life -- but by the third, as reality itself is collapsing into a tired heap around you, the First Flame can do little more than _smolder_ around you.
      'Tired' really is the word for the world of this game. It _wants_ to end. It _should've_ ended _ages_ ago, but for the arrogance of one man who feared the Dark more than anything -- but much like the Hollowed Undead that trudge wearily along its paths, it's just been forced on, again and again, long past its natural end.
      ...I bloody *_love_* these games' narrative aesthetic.

    This game has one of my favourite OSTs in any game honestly. My three fav tracks "Sister Friede" from the Ashes of Ariandel DLC, Slave Knight Gael from the Ringed City DLC (and canonically the final boss of the Dark Souls trilogy) and "Secret Betrayal" which replaces the Firelink Shrine music if you perform a long and convoluted quest involving several hidden areas and difficult boss fights. There's something about "Secret Betrayal" that feels so special. The quest involves giving the Firekeeper of Firelink Shrine a pair of eyes from another dead Firekeeper, which is portrayed as being heinous, unnatural and very wrong to do... and the way the music in Firelink Shrine, the hub area, changes just feels like something is very wrong about the world now.

The fight is extremely difficult because it's hard to lock on to and even get a hit on A FLYING DRAGON, and the fight is set in the epic location of a castle ruin surrounded by a thunderstorm. Dark Souls III is basically like the end of the world, hence the main menu theme is that epic, it is like it is time to put to an end, this is "The End of The Age of Fire".
    After this there others fron DSIII;
    Pontiff Sulyvahn.
    Champion Iudex Gundyr.
    Twin Princes.
    Sister Friede.
    Dark Eater Midir.
    Slave Knight Gael
    Epilogue Ringed City Version.

    Yuka Kitamura eventually collaborated with Alex Roe, a long time Souls track remixer and original musician in his own right, and they put out a EP mini album together! Each did 2 tracks.

    One thing I love about the Abyss Watchers OST it's its difference in phases
    Phase 1 you're battling the leader, one sane member, and one mad member (who attacks everyone), and thus you have the orchestra, the main vocals, and the accompanying vocals.
    Phase 2 the blood of all members flows into their leader, and you fight him powered up one on one. The OST now only has a few, strong, instruments and the lone main vocalist. The only one that remains.

    To set the scene for the nameless king boss battle, the moment you step into the arena (you are walking on a field of clouds) this guy swoops in on a dragon fighting you from its back, and throwing lightning bolts at you from the sky. After the health bar drops to 0, you've actually just mortally injured the dragon. He kills it himself to take its power, then puts on a clinic kicking your butt with his spear skills. Every sweep sends waves of wind billowing through the clouds and every slam sends lightning down on you. Unlike a lot of fights there is no gimmick, just a 1 on 1 between you and a former god of war. He's old and withered to the point of looking like a mummy, but still maintains his will and regality unlike almost every other person (or deity) in this world.

    The piano at the end is a callback to Gwyn's theme from Dark Souls 1, the boss at that point begins to fight like Gwyn, Soul of Cinder itself is a culmination of all beings who sacrificed themselves to keep the fires alive, including the player character from Dark Souls 1 which is why it sounds so much sadder than just Gwyn's theme, you literally have to destroy your original character from the first game.

    17:30 The Nameless King was the first son of Gwyn (Lord of the Sun and final boss of the first Dark Souls). He was a fierce warrior specialized in lightning and killing dragons, but when he realized that the war against the dragons declared by his father was just to kill the dragons and gain more power, the Nameless King decided to go against Gywn and fight alongside the dragons. Because of this, Gwyin erased any track of him from history books and pretended he never had a son.

    19:18 I don't even know how someone discovered how you can get to the area of the Nameless King. It's not even secret like a normal "side quest boss". Towards the middle part of the game there is a place where you have to sit down using a gesture called "The Path of the Dragon" to get to the Nameless King area. The funny thing is that you only get this gesture or emote towards the end of the game in an area which is also optional, which means somebody went back to a seemingly random place in the middle of the game, and did the right gesture in the right place, I'm guessing completely randomly. Then the game teleports you to Archdragon Peak, where you can fight the Nameless King. There are 25 bosses in the base game (without the expansions), and you can easily miss at least 5 of them off the top of my head.

    Nameless King is considered the most difficult boss in the game, no contest. You need to get through an entire bonus zone after solving a puzzle to unlock it (and the Souls games are known for being difficult to begin with) if you want the chance at fighting him, and he's one of the most notoriously frustrating fights in gaming history. The first person to fight him would've had to go pretty damn far out of their way off the path of the main game to hear that bit of the soundtrack.

  • @goosemanVEVO

    The Nameless King is a secret optional boss. He is the firstborn son of Gwyn the Lord of Sunlight, later to become the first Lord of Cinder. A title given to a person who sacrifices themselves to be burned alive by the First Flame to keep it going, and stall the onset of the coming age of dark.
    The Nameless King was a god of war who fought against the dragons, but betrated his father to side with the dragons. He is nameless because his father redacted his name from the history books because of his betrayal. And he is a king because his father and almost all of his family are dead, making him the heir to whats left of his father's kingdom. Not that it means much by the time of the 3rd game.
    He begins the fight riding his wyvern, the king of storms. But once the wyvern is dead he fights you one on one.

    Go back and listen to Gwyn's theme from DS1 and understand that was the final boss fight of DS1, and imagine coming to the end of DS3, halfway through the Souls of Cinder bossfight (with design inspired by the Gwyn fight), music changes to piano (with orchestra this time) with Gwyn's theme. It's a perfect end to the DS3 trilogy.
    Also, Twin Princes is best track IMO from DS3, with elements similar to title theme. Title theme was initially meant for an end game boss fight but when they changed the order of the fights and totally rescripted the stories, that track was no longer used as a bossfight and instead we are blessed with an epic title track

    Found the channel recently and I love the reactions to the Xenoblade and Dark souls stuff specifically (highly recommend Disgaea music, specifically the first game) Dark Souls 3 is kinda shat on for being arguably the most flawed of the trilogy, but it always felt nostalgic despite releasing only 9 years ago. Abyss Watchers was my favorite track in the game until I heard Soul of Cinder, the melancholy feel while still keeping the suspense and the vocals which gave a sad, but also slightly triumphant feeling, like you are destined to win this battle because of how the odds are stacked against the watchers.
    Btw I was hoping you'd made the connection with the last one, but the piano portion of Soul of Cinder is actually Gwen's theme from DS1, but I understand not catching that since it's been a hot minute since then, we may never get another DS game but I feel like ending on the combined strength of all previous kindlers (including your DS1 character) is a really sweet way to end the trilogy.

    Vordt is the first boss outside of the tutorial area and the reason you recognize his theme is because it's very often used in meme edits.
    Yes, Nameless King is a side quest, in fact it is very easy to miss him... he also happens to be Gwyn's firstborn son who was exiled, so he is essentially the heir to the kingdom, not to mention a literal god of war.
    Soul of Cinder is an amazing piece, but Slave Knight Gael is arguably even better. Soul of Cinder is the final boss of Dark Souls 3, but Gael is the final boss of the series as a whole.

    Also, a little context for the Nameless King: in the first game, Gwyn God of Sunlight, waged war with the everlasting dragons. One of the greatest warriors on his side was his son, a mighty god of war. It's not known exactly why, but his son betrayed him, and so he was stricken from history. Statues of the god of war were destroyed, his name forgotten, and few speak of him at all. Now, in Dark Souls 3, we arrive at Archdragon Peak to face the Nameless King, the forgotten son of Gwyn and one of the harder bosses in the game

    Nameless King is the first son of Gwyn. A god of war that hunted dragons until he decided to ally with them and for that, his father exiled him and took his name.
    Abyss Watchers are fighting the abyss corrupting themselves. In the middle of the boss fight, a corrupted Abyss watcher will rise and start fighting the others.
    Soul of Cinder is the amalgamation of everyone that linked the fire. That means, he is Gwyn, he is you from DS1 and you from DS2. In the first phase we fight those versions of ourselves and in the second phase, we fight Gwyn (the piano is the same as in DS1)
    You need to make another video, not only about the DLC tracks but also some tracks you missed, like:
    -Lorian and Lothric
    -Pontiff Sulyvahn.
    -Epilogue.

    Oh hollow ash! Grant us ears, so we can hear this art!
    Oh, the Nameless King. It was discovered rather late. And I mean very late after the game is released. It is said people lost their minds, learning there was a whole new part of the game. Wich I mean a huge place wich 2 sections.Then, he was called the hardest boss in gaming. He is Gwyn's firstborn. Instead of fighting dragons, he sided with them. In his fight he rides a dragon, while you both inside a strom... On the clouds. itself? Anyways his name is "Strom King" while he is on tbe dragon. Then after you kill the dragon, the hard part starts. His name changes to "Nameless King", then you fight the once hardest souls boss ever.
    ...wich if you didn't know, Fromsoft is making a new game. Elden Ring Nightreign. Elden right is a complete different story with different characters, different gods. It's kind of like Greek myth and norse myth, they are separate. But then... Nameless King just appears on the trailer... For no reason?? I guess he decided that he didn't beat enough ass in Dark Souls 3 and decided to join Elden Ring to make people suffer more.
    By the way, between all the games 1, 2 and 3 they are very apart in time. Between the first game and the last at least few 1000 years have passed... Probably? (In Dark Souls time is a suggesttion, you can just chat with a guy 10 minutes before you and fight someone 2 weeks further. One of the very jolly character in Dark Souls 1 said "The flow of time itself is convoluted, with heroes centuries old phasing in and out") So yeah, Gwyn (and his theme) being part of Soul of Cinder is a neat thing. (By everyone who linked the fire, it doesn't mean hust Gwyn and counts every player from DS1 wich choose the link fhe flame ending and few boss characters such as Abby's Wathers. So Soul of Cinder can just do all kind of weapons, magic and pyromancy on you, wich you can do too. He also looks like the knight armor version of the player character from Dark Souls 1... I didn't had to point that out haha, he is already on the thumbnail and every cover!)
    This comment was suppose to only have "Grant us ears!" but couldn't stop myself from ranting about a really awasome game!
