The genie was the worst thing to happen to the series. He made the whole story weaker. He made Dan look incompetent to figure stuff out on his own which downplays the whole purpose to prove everyone that he is a true hero. He made Zarok look weak by saying his power is stolen from him instead of hiding and becoming a more powerful sorcerer over a century. The whole dark gothic atmosphere that was created in the first game is all just stolen genie magic now. Just hearing the genie's voice in the remaster teaser just makes me shudder. The story NEVER needed him and I really hope they don't bring him back.
With luck, they will just remake the PS1 original and forget this version existed, I mean they did it with Crash Bandicoot, maybe they can do with the dead skeleybro?
Dan WAS incompetent… that was kinda the point of the story. Dude was a sniveling incompetent coward who went down as a hero, that was given a second chance, and forced to EARN his title as Galomere’s greatest hero.
Regarding Medievil vs Resurrection... I noticed something when playing Resurrection on a stream at one point... Are the Hall of Heroes characters nicer in the remake? I seem to recall the heroes in the original mercilessly mocking you... except the amazon lady, who was a little bit... well... flirty. Okay, a LOT flirty. Anyway, the constant mockery from the other heroes added to an atmosphere of pluckiness, which helped to take away the "Epic hero" story feeling and turn it into a bit more of a Burton meets Python sort of thing.
I beat Medievil 1 and 2 many many years ago when they were almost new, then when I heard it had a remake on the PSP I was very happy, fast fowarding many years I played it not long ago on my PC with emulation OFC and I found the game to be a somewhat disappointing... it was not bad but it was not what I thought it would be. I hope someday this franchise get's the proper remakes and even a Medievil 3 and 4 perhaps.
No. I played the first game less than a week before I touched the remake. The mechanics were fresh in my mind as I tackled the new bosses. They are bad, period. Claiming I'm blinded by nostalgia for games I played so recently at the time is hilarious.
Naaaah MediEvil Resurrection is awesome, sure the original is better but Resurrection is better than original in few ways: 1. MUCH Controls 2. Camera works much better 3. Graphics ofc 4. Better reweards for Chalices 5. Minigames Okay number 5 was a joke, i hate minigames in this game
i thought the script writing feels over the top and stinks, as you said forced. but however i really appreciate the mini games, multiplayer and im trying too get used too the combat its nice having combos and all that. im gonna try and play through this whole thing i do hope too grow to enjoy and appreciate it a bit more, i think its a great psp game though, looks really nice upscaled. but yeah the originals impossible for me too beat.
I never play any Medievil game before, but I was impressed by how good was looking the Remake on the PS4 so I promised myself that at some point I will play them all, lucky for me after get a Premium Plus for the first time and also because Halloween is get closer I believe it was the right time to fulfill this promise. (I'm currently on Resurrection for PS5) While I understand why some people get kinda upset with the PSP version I personally didn't dislike it, it definitely lacks some elements from the PS1 version but I think overall it was an enjoyable game (although I admittedly disliked the Genie, as it seemed like it was simply added as a way to explain the story for the more young audience)
Yes, I do. I'm gonna give the series a bit of a break for now to talk about other games and some weeb stuff. I've started Medievil II but I haven't played more than like a hour of it, not really sure what to think of it yet.
Aaaaah alrighty, also, one old series I would recommend you try out is Legacy of Kain...if you want whimpy vampires of Twilight to get go fucking die in a fire, then it might just be the thing for you.
sweet, it's another series that I don't think doesn't get that much love....especially when Dead Sun got cancelled and seeing that 15 minute demo didn't help either.
Just watched both your medieval vids and was amazed to see your channel only has a few videos and is so new, wanted to say that I love your review style, your humour and attention to details was great and greatly delivered, hope you keep up with the good work, can’t wait to see what you do next!
Hey, thank you so much saying that, it means a lot to me! Seriously, your comment put a big ass smile on my face. I'm doing my best to put out new stuff regularly with the same quality standards as the medievil vids and I certainly hope you continue enjoying what I put out!
I loved resurrection even more than the original ps1 game, how the heck this game got a 66 % rating back then ? For me unbelievable how s.o can rank this game below 8/10, i had tons of spending hours and delightful memorys witz resurrection.
When trying to explain atmosphere or describing it, I always like to point out to Resident Evil 1. People remember shitty controls and camera in every corridor so it always switched when you made a step, no music in backgroud and only shitty SFX. That was a whole point and why it was such a good horror, it made you panic. However I like you explaination and complete agree on ressurection thing. I couldn't stand to play it on PSP so I ported PSone version on PSP. Hope you look out for Medievil despite Resurrection being this, I look out for it too.
I’m here a little late. But every issue you have with resurrection is the things I love. I love that everyone talks I love that it’s forced. I think maybe it’s because I played resurrection originally so I always seen the game as forced comedy but it’s what I loved about it. I’ve got a platinum on both on ps5 and for me I’d always suggest resurrection. My only issue with it is the lack of the time level towards the end of the game
That was a very interesting video. I played Resurrection in high school, having never played the original, and I loved it. I got really annoyed by some of its unpolished elements too, but the lack of proper joysticks on the PSP made pretty much any 3D game kind of a mess in the first place, so it wasn't that much worse than any other game I played. (Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, Secret Agent Clank, Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier... remind me why I liked the PSP again?) I thought MediEvil Resurrection's imagery was unique, it was unlike anything else I'd played and it was quite funny. So when I saw the PS4 remake, I had these thoughts in that order: - Oh wow, this looks really good. - Aw, It's like they're going for a completely different atmosphere. They made the game creepy instead of silly. How uninspired. - Oh, the original was actually creepy and it's the PSP version which ruined its tone? ...I get the feeling fans of the original hate the PSP game for trampling on that. What you described in this video is pretty much exactly what I pointed out in my own review of Ratchet & Clank for the PS4. A remake which ads in a bazillion jokes and forgets why the original was so good in the first place. I'll probably give the PS4 version of MediEvil a chance then.
Am playing it right know first time without playing the first game this is the best psp game period I don’t get it ... this game is funny with a great atmosphere, awesome art direction, the voice over is great with fairytale like delivery, and the controls are direct(not the best tho) also the jokes are awesome ,maybe you are a little bit biased? There is nothing wrong when you create an equally good game with a different twist to it this I believe is exactly that.
Oh my god thank you for making a video on this 😭 I'd never have the patience to play this god awful hunk of shit. I have genuinely no idea who this game was made for, because it's like the dialogue is aimed towards adults, yet the game itself has been so heavily altered to be more kid-friendly...??? WHO EVEN ASKED FOR THIS
I really dug this when it first came out, mainly because I was desperate for more Medievil but it doesn't hold up at all. You make a great point about the constant talking.
I thought we would have gotten more info on the Remaster by now..Are they waiting until E3? Either that or they realized what huge mistake it was to have the genii's voice in the trailer, and are now starting from the ground up on the ORIGINAL. It better not be resurrection, or me and many others won't be purchasing it.
Well that wouldn't be so bad, but they better not just make Resurrection. I have a feeling they are only making one of the games since they didn't say trilogy or anything in the announcement trailer.
If you are familia with legacy of Kain series, I and many others, would adore to see a review, I fancy your comic sence, and will be looking forward to another video anyway, impressive, amusing and through research!
TheRetroguitar fun fact, Soul Reaver was my favorite game for the longest time, and I love the series to pieces. I've been planning reviews for each game in the series, so that is something you can look forward to! Also I'm really glad you liked the videos, I put a lot of work into them and I'm glad you and others seem to be enjoying them! Thank you so much
Finally someone appreciate the craftsmanship of good voiceacting, brilliant plot, and lore!! I'm forever grateful sir!! Legacy of Kain, has been my personal favorite game series. Though I did only play Soul Reaver as entrance to this extraordinary franchise, Soul Reaver 2 (despite the very bland title) was in my opinion one of the most philosophical and fatalistic of them all. However I'd like to evaluate the series as one experience, which is by far one of/ perhaps the best gameseries of all time. If they(Vicarious Visions or Square Enix) decide to remaster the series, It would be the heart desire on my behalf, and I hope they won't butcher or soil the games, with overexaggerated and frankly awful infantile humor!
@@TerrorOfTalos Terror of Talos, Andrea does not have to make a video to validate his opinion! Many people think Resurrection is a better game... it's all about personal preference. The original Medievil has aged badly in my opinion.... it's clumsy to play and relies on it's (abundant) vintage charm. Of course many "fan boy" gamers love it... mostly because they played it when they were kids, and it is burned into their psyche. Resurrection is a flawed game (and Al Zalam is awful) but the orginal game is just as flawed, in different ways.... SOOO many people see Medievil on PS1 through a child's rose tinted specs....and that is fine.... but imho it is not a FACT that it is a superior game....that is just your opinion.... Cheers :)
@@DoMythago Many people? You mean just contrarians right? If Resurrection was so much better why would developers look at the PS1 original (this includes concept art and the like) as the main source of inspiration for the upcoming remake hm? What about the many actual people months ago that were worried about the remake because the PSX 2017 trailer had resurrection voices and that zombie render at the end? Along with the logo (which I still hope isn't final). Fact of the matter is the original MediEvil is the way more beloved and fondly remembered game, hell a lot of people still have memories of it from just the demo 20 years ago. I personally have no nostalgia for the original MediEvil and while it does have its flaws it's much better than the sum of it's parts and I cannot say the same for resurrection as it's a cheap interpretation of the original and has much less going for it overall, the original developers have even made their dislike for it known. If you like Resurrection that's fine but don't ever think the majority prefers it because that's simply not true.
@@TerrorOfTalos Hi, Ok, lets take each of your points, one by one. Firstly I didnt say Resurrection was a much better game. Both games have good points and bad points... I would say overall they have a similar level of quality... some people like PS1 version, some like the PSP version. Resurrection was a reimagining of the first game...a copy if you like, with a slightly different approach.... it was have been bizarre if Sony had created a copy of a copy... to create the new version. And sure lots of PS1 Medievil fanboys were worried about the remake... of course they were, they wanted to relive their childhoods.. and the original game. Look, just because more people like Medievil 1 on psx... doesn't make it an undenaibly better game... that is poor logic....popularity doesnt equate to quality (I mean look at Ed Sheeran). And I didnt say the majority of people liked Resurrection over the original... of course that is not the case????? did you read my comments? I actually said some people prefer one version, and others prefer the other.... so you final comments are nonsensical. Another of your points... that the original developers disliked Resurrection - you seem to imply that this fact adds evidence to the fact that resurrection is inferior. Well how does that work? They are certainly entitled to their opinions... but might those opinions be slightly biased? errrr.... just maybe! lol :) . From what I have heard, the original game creators, were in the same studio space when Resurrection was being made (they were working on a different title), and they were consulted throughout the game's 1 year development (yes, just 1 year!).. during that process, they were apparently pretty happy with the way the game was going and even signed off on characters like Al Zalam, etc. They were not "cut off" from the game. It was only some time later that they started moaning in interviews and slagging the psp game off. That is of course their perogative... I can understand why they feel protective of a game that they built from scratch.. the emotional bonds must be strong. They brought an amazing franchise into life and i respect them greatly for that. Most of the games I remember fondly from my childhood are pretty dissapointing (and have aged badly) when I go back and play them... I think quite a few people will think the same about the new remastered version...regardless of how pretty it is.... we shall see :) I genuinely hope not. So, to reiterate my thoughts.... yes Medievil on psx is far more popular than Resurrection. Does that make it obviously better? no. Do you think it is better? yes!.... do I respect your opinion? yes! Can I have a different opinion? in my humble opinion, yes :). Is the valuation of a videogame entirely subjective? yes :). I hope you love playing the new version and it lives up to your expectations. Cheers! :)
@@DoMythago Oh trust me I definitely will enjoy it. Also N.Sane got pretty good reception from most and Crash is pretty much just DKC in 3D lol, I feel Reignited will also be well received too. I doubt most long time fans or newcomers will be disappointed with the MediEvil remake as long as it's polished (completely removing any 5th gen jank) and properly recreates the memorable experience a lot of people had with the game back in the late 90s. I'm hoping they add some of those cut levels from the original as well.
Dude your humor is great, I enjoyed both of your videos on medieval very much! Why don't you do a review on the ps4 remake? It would be great and I think your channel deserves much more visibility.
I feel like you critiqued traits of the game that you personally don't like and tried to make them look objectively bad, like...the humor, the atmosphere, and the minigames you're not forced to play They're all things I personally adore about this game Every single thing you described was described in a negative way, making it seem like the game has zero good qualities, which is very silly in a game review in my opinion. You picked the things that you wanted to criticize without analyzing the game objectively and thoroughly
Great video. I don't have nearly as many issues with Resurrection as you do but I think it's obvious the original is better. I hope that's what they're basing the remaster on!
First vid has trash anime characters but this vid, has Guts, Jotaro and DIO. Fuck yes. also no... Ressurection did not run at 60fps my PSP3000 dipped at times playing the game.
I am weeb trash and I will never change. Man I really should have fact checked that but honestly I didn't sit through the whole game again. Runs at 60 fps *on an emulator.
Enjoyed your humor and style in this, and you still provided meaningful info on the two games. Checking out your channel and it looks kind of dead which is a shame. YT recommended me to your vid so thats nice.
BTW I showed this video to someone and he said he fell asleep watching it... but I enjoyed this um review? So yea I will sub and like, hope you talk about Medevil II sometime soon, I honestly have always prefered the first game but the second is really good stuff too.
Just found out today that Tom Baker plays the Narrator and as The Grim Reaper in Medievil Resurrection. Yeah, as in The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who is in this game. What a waste of talent...
the animation how he runs in resurrection makes it feel bad. i dont know how else to explain it haha in the old one hes got more pop in his stride? haha
Nagh, not really. You forgot that this game is on PSP and i doubt that it's for cynical manchildren, more like for average kids. Humour is subjective - you said it yourself, so it wasn't ruined by that mumbling and it had it's own atmosphere. C'mon, Black Mesa is not Half-Life and Reignited is not Spyro, really. These are remakes, so it has it's own atmosphere, kiddo, and people like it. The important thing is that it's pleasant to slash through zombies and weapons are okay and this is not bad for a PSP game already. It supposed to be different, like all remakes - it's for the new generation like you said and less likely for us, and you obviously shouldn't say things like you remembering levels as a teenager and forgeting remake ones later (you probably don't know how funny that sounds) because you are supposed to. Perception of a kid or a teenager grants you a lot more and that's why even true to the original recreations would have different atmosphere. The original game itself just feels different to me right now and I can't do anything about it( Same with Spyro and Half-Life - they never lost their soul, they just have it changed. You know, Dan wasn't a hero, wasn't himself, before his resurrection. But remakes were that fresh air that made my brain work and showed me their conceptions differently - the reason why i came back to the originals after that weird mixed feeling i got after remakes and remembered them as they were even with my now-blunt perception, sadly not for that long to enjoy them like before. But to be true, I do feel the same as you. I want a truly 1998 conception Half-Lfe, Spyro, with original wizard models and colour corrections, and Medievil that was a lot darker and more mutey.
Hopefully the new PS4 remake of the original game will help everyone forget about 'Resurrection', given it is simply called "MediEvil" (thus far), and the trailer compares it's gameplay to the PS1 game.

With luck, they will just remake the PS1 original and forget this version existed, I mean they did it with Crash Bandicoot, maybe they can do with the dead skeleybro?
Crazzy Crisis hopefully....if not, I shall cry...
Oh yeah! The are remaking the ps1 one!
Brian Martinez fuck that genie he’s a joke
I loved medievil on psp and absurd humour suited me. But there was too much repetitive talking in hall of heroes and selling gargoyles
Al Zalam says "Hey Listen"
Nostalgia blinded imo.
"Hurr durr bosses bad"
I agree with some of your points but i think most of your points are just nostalgia short sightedness
No. I played the first game less than a week before I touched the remake. The mechanics were fresh in my mind as I tackled the new bosses. They are bad, period. Claiming I'm blinded by nostalgia for games I played so recently at the time is hilarious.
Agree with you Fraser.
Imagine a Dark Souls like resurection..
You hit here to kill.
Here is the way to treasure.
And here is..the great secret of.
Sir Dan...
I've only played 2 and Resurrection. Sir Dan was also my main in PlayStation Allstars. I was wishing he would get another game.
This is still the best ost rendition of medievil.
I think the nostalgia is speaking out of many of you... in my opinion resurrection is straight up 1:1 the better game
Penta no
I disagree
Naaaah MediEvil Resurrection is awesome, sure the original is better but Resurrection is better than original in few ways:
1. MUCH Controls
2. Camera works much better
3. Graphics ofc
4. Better reweards for Chalices
5. Minigames
Okay number 5 was a joke, i hate minigames in this game
I hope the developpers for the remake saw your video because you are so true. We need athmosphere and perfect music.
Al Zalam is essentially just Puck from Berserk minus any of the charm
Not that Puck has much anyway
I miss you so much Al zalam.... Medievil on ps4 without Al zalam... What a pitty....
i thought the script writing feels over the top and stinks, as you said forced. but however i really appreciate the mini games, multiplayer and im trying too get used too the combat its nice having combos and all that. im gonna try and play through this whole thing i do hope too grow to enjoy and appreciate it a bit more, i think its a great psp game though, looks really nice upscaled. but yeah the originals impossible for me too beat.
I never play any Medievil game before, but I was impressed by how good was looking the Remake on the PS4 so I promised myself that at some point I will play them all, lucky for me after get a Premium Plus for the first time and also because Halloween is get closer I believe it was the right time to fulfill this promise.
(I'm currently on Resurrection for PS5)
While I understand why some people get kinda upset with the PSP version I personally didn't dislike it, it definitely lacks some elements from the PS1 version but I think overall it was an enjoyable game (although I admittedly disliked the Genie, as it seemed like it was simply added as a way to explain the story for the more young audience)
welp since you're free from resurrection, you got plans to try and touch on Medievil II?
Soul Reaver is literally my favorite game lol
Im actually playing through Blood Omen 1 right now
sweet, it's another series that I don't think doesn't get that much love....especially when Dead Sun got cancelled and seeing that 15 minute demo didn't help either.
1:58 It should have been a time device in Franks hands. missed opportunity.
I still prefer the controls in this game, platforming not being shit shouldnt be a negative.
The rest I agree with
Wonder what he thinks of the other medieval remake
Just watched both your medieval vids and was amazed to see your channel only has a few videos and is so new, wanted to say that I love your review style, your humour and attention to details was great and greatly delivered, hope you keep up with the good work, can’t wait to see what you do next!
Hey, thank you so much saying that, it means a lot to me! Seriously, your comment put a big ass smile on my face. I'm doing my best to put out new stuff regularly with the same quality standards as the medievil vids and I certainly hope you continue enjoying what I put out!
Talk about MediEvil 2, I like it more than first one tho
I do plan on it, but it won't be for a while, i'm a bit MediEviled out
I loved resurrection even more than the original ps1 game, how the heck this game got a 66 % rating back then ?
I think that Medievil Resurrection putting Medievil 2 OST was a good idea
Played both, preferred resurrection.
Smooth controls and visuals, perfect ost.
Don't worry, a remake of this game is coming
So when I saw the PS4 remake, I had these thoughts in that order:
- Oh wow, this looks really good.
Clearly you are playing through emulation.. the PSP Resurrection has many slowdowns and low FPS
There’s a test!? I DIDN’T STUDY!
THAT'S WHERE YOU FUCKED UP KIDDO
Honestly, Medievil 1 is better than Medievil Resurrection.
However, I guess and I must admit both are worth trying/playing.
4:28 good god fortesque what happened to your map?!
I sure as hell hope they do what they did with Crash Bandicoot, where they will remake 1, 2, and Res, and sell that to us. I would buy that shit.
The comments disagreeing with a video is hilarious.
Medievil Resurrection is better than Medievil (1998)
Make your own video explaining why then because that's far from the truth and you know it
@@TerrorOfTalos Terror of Talos, Andrea does not have to make a video to validate his opinion!
@@TerrorOfTalos
Hi,
Ok, lets take each of your points, one by one.
Is resurrection medieval 2?
True
so glad that sony is doing a new remaster instead of these dumb changes
This channel is underrated
Thanks! Maybe one day I won't be
Hey, listen!
Thats what made the original better
Or the newer remake
Its humor was brought subitly, in a way its more like chaps making jokes, not producers
what happened to the dark atmosphere, the extraordinary score, this is abysmal and below any medievil related material!!
Still waiting on a fresh vid
This was fucking funny, and everything was spot on lol.
SUBSCRIBED
Dude your humor is great, I enjoyed both of your videos on medieval very much! Why don't you do a review on the ps4 remake? It would be great and I think your channel deserves much more visibility.
Cringe opinion
But it’s an opinion whatsoever
Have a good day
60fps??? even modern handhelds can't manage that
You have taught me de wae!
Thank you muh Broda
You put out quality that beats youtubers like Jontron. WHY THE FUCK DONT YOU HAVE MORE SUBS!?!?@
It does Not run at 60 fps on the psp
Make the MediEvil 2 video 🙏
I will, sooner or later.
I feel like you critiqued traits of the game that you personally don't like and tried to make them look objectively bad, like...the humor, the atmosphere, and the minigames you're not forced to play
They're all things I personally adore about this game
Every single thing you described was described in a negative way, making it seem like the game has zero good qualities, which is very silly in a game review in my opinion. You picked the things that you wanted to criticize without analyzing the game objectively and thoroughly
I love this video
Hoi fuckboi, I absolutely loved this video and the original MediEvil one, when are you going to compare the two to the PS4 remake?
Subscribed 😘
Great video. I don't have nearly as many issues with Resurrection as you do but I think it's obvious the original is better. I hope that's what they're basing the remaster on!
why do you sound more Anerican in this video than Part 1?
First vid has trash anime characters but this vid, has Guts, Jotaro and DIO.
Fuck yes.
also no... Ressurection did not run at 60fps my PSP3000 dipped at times playing the game.
I am weeb trash and I will never change.
Man I really should have fact checked that but honestly I didn't sit through the whole game again. Runs at 60 fps *on an emulator.
Its almost a year, where is our Medieval 2 Video? :3
What is the point of Resurrection when you can play the original on the psp.
Wow nice review, such a quality one to be honest. You deserve more subs
You crack me up!
I do try
Its not that bad
Enjoyed your humor and style in this, and you still provided meaningful info on the two games. Checking out your channel and it looks kind of dead which is a shame.
YT recommended me to your vid so thats nice.
BTW I showed this video to someone and he said he fell asleep watching it... but I enjoyed this um review? So yea I will sub and like, hope you talk about Medevil II sometime soon, I honestly have always prefered the first game but the second is really good stuff too.
Never cared for this game... Miss Daniel of old.
Great video, what's the name/what show is the smug blonde anime girl with the horns you keep using?
Ms. Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, I love it to death
👌💀
2:10
Just found out today that Tom Baker plays the Narrator and as The Grim Reaper in Medievil Resurrection. Yeah, as in The Fourth Doctor from Doctor Who is in this game. What a waste of talent...
the animation how he runs in resurrection makes it feel bad. i dont know how else to explain it haha in the old one hes got more pop in his stride? haha
Nah. That's just unnecessary.
Hopefully the new PS4 remake of the original game will help everyone forget about 'Resurrection',
given it is simply called "MediEvil" (thus far), and the trailer compares it's gameplay to the PS1 game.
medievil rsurrectios should've been made for the ps2 ps3 and the ps4 and ps5
Hey, listen!
