Holy smokes. Well done. I can't imagine the work that went into this.
Practical Engineering ikr I wonder how long it took to make this camera. Must've take a lot of time but I k ow it was worth it. This camera is so amazing and I wish I could own one.
Wait... you're here?

That's really impressive. The imagery is quite good!
I was just watching one of your videos and decided it was time to look around for a good slow motion camera again, and here you are. You should totally get one of these, would make your channel even better!
MidBoss I'm currently testing it out. BUY ONE when they become available. You won't regret it! I have a few examples of what this camera does, filming shotgun slugs.
TAOFLEDERMAUS yea this is definitely the perfect tafldermaus camera. been watching your channel for years with the ol' casio. I'm definitely going to order one on Kickstarter as soon as possible!!
loudpanzer You won't regret it!
Love your channel Jeff, and I saw Codydon Reeder using one too! My channel is small and so is my budget, but this is an investment I cant pass up! Im might have to sell of a few musical instruments and a child or two but, hey its all for the sake of art right?
Awesome! That is really high-quality work! I've got some interesting applications in mind for a cordless high-speed camera.
Thanks! Watch your inbox for email soon about that.
Thank goodness you're here. Did all this make sense to you?
Hello can I mail you ?, I have an interesting proposition .
tesla500@hotmail.com
tesla500 Have you ever watched fellow machinist AVE's channel? He might be interested in trying out this new camera of yours!
Can't believe you have such amazing skills with such a low audience. I'll spread the word best I can, but I don't have much of an audience either.
China amp hours lol. A fantastic camera. Far beyond my price range but absolutely amazing!
Me too :(. I wish there were more affordable high speed cameraeueaes. I am getting the Casio Exilim EX F1 in a couple of days though :D
2,500$ is stupidly affordable. That's like saying you wish there more affordable luxury electric sports cars. If you didn't realize, most good high speed cameras cost over 30,000$ or so. Please stop complaining.
***** It's affordable, just not affordable enough for my budget. This is a great camera though, don't get me wrong :P
*****
not beyond my price range.. if he's got a spare laying around...?
AMAZING work! This will be a game changer in the video industry! Please let us know when this will go live on kickstarter!
Looks pretty amazing!
I found you!
Found your channel via Cody. Holy crap this is impressive.
Footage at the end looks amazing! Awesome!
Hi David , thanks for making this camera me and Jeff had a blast playing with it . Jeff seems to love it and is super excited to play with it hahaha . It's a cool camera I can't believe u build that . Nice job .
i laugh every time i hear that one guy in your videos saying "ready!"
Personally I love the raw machined aluminium look. Maybe you could make that a no cost option (it would save you a bit on powder coating or hard anodising as well so more profit for R&D)
I love the simply assembled case. Is the final design going to have the same accessibility to the inner components? Is that a C or a CS mount?
Yes, the basic design will be the same. The camera body itself is CS mount, with a C adapter
It's always pretty cool to see 2 great channels talking to eachother.
I hope he sends you one of the prototypes. I bet you'd do some amazing work with it!
wait make that 3
I cant express how impressed I am with this. Especially after the mousetrap video how someone made this in their garage is insane
Also I know touch screens are easy and cheap but there's a reason dslr's still have dozens of functions available through physical buttons, not having to look at a display can be a huge bonus
I do love the scroll functionality though
Don't think that's an issue for a high speed camera. Those are not really point and shoot cameras and every shot usually takes some amount of setup anyway.
Ivan Stroganov A dslr is not point and shoot unless its in auto mode
Seems like a great Camera! Nice work!
you are an awesome engineer!
Awesome...you've got a sale here for sure!
now that Cody's Lab and Backyard Scientist both linked here in their videos this channel is gonna go holywood af! :-DDD
This is fantastic. I've always wanted a high speed camera to make content, but the price. With this, i'll be that much closer to finally obtaining one! Well done good sir!
Woah woah... wait a minute, you MADE THAT?! Gosh and golly, God has blessed you with extreme talents! You've just EASILY earned a subscriber, a fellow engineer. God bless you and thank you for sharing. 😎😀
That's very nice.
I see few "problems" as fillmaker:
-At least fhd 1920x1080 max resolution ( maybe @800fps)
-Compatible with other mounts like EF, or better, E mount - many fillmakers use EF mounts because It's easy to adapt to sony E or other mirrorless mounts and have good and fast optics for cheap. (maybe offer a version with the EF mount-even if the sensor si smaller than aps-c size, es can add metabones speedbooster or similar)
-Log or cine gamma profile - like in sony cameras
-Better battery - many filmmaker have the np-f sony batteries that can be changed fast and easy, they have many sizies (eg: np-f550 up to np-f970) and they are cheap.
Thank you for your time
Impressive, well designed and manufactured to a very high standard with excellent materials. You are an artist!
Absolutely fantastic! A lot of people have been waiting for this scope of camera and you completely knocked it out of the park! Guess I'd better start setting some $$ aside... XD
I would mention that having all the connectors on a daughter board is a *must*. I can't count the number of black magic pocket cinema cameras which were destroyed due to the HDMI being on the main board. It means when a connector is abused and ruins the board it doesn't require a new main board (which has the CPU attached, at least in this case the sensor is on a daughter board already - the BM camera had the HDMI on the same board as the sensor).
This isn't optional at all, it's a must for this type of camera, sometimes all it takes is someone brushing past with an external monitor plugged in and it will rip the tracks off the board and ruin it.
Good thing it has that.
Wow, for a prototype, that is VERY fancy. You make other kickstarters cry in that level of detail!
This is AMAZING. Can't wait for your Kickstarter. Please also keep in mind that there was a 1,000fps camera that was funded on Kickstarter already and they ended up having money problems after hitting some major issues. I'll be watching for yours!
I saw some sample shots from that camera and it wasn't nearly as good as this.
I've seen footage on RUclips which look pretty good - of course it all depends on if the shooter has good lighting, focus, etc... but off the bat, this one looks really good.
You have done something that is amazing by any standard and the fact that you did a lot of this by your self and gave it out to youtubers that can really show off what this can do is incredible!
That's a very impressive design. Good luck with your production and kickstarter campaign!
This is fantastic! I love how many features you integrated into the system and how well designed everything is. Also, I love that you have twilight sparkle on the silkscreen, I hope you always keep that on there, its such a nice touch :3
Keep it for your prototypes, but for the actual production run, off with it!
aww I actually like it there, I understand most people probably wouldn't want it there on a finished product but then again, its all up to him :)
Indeed, it is. Opinions differ when it comes to things like this. While I truly think he made an amazing job, as I am quite aware of what is going on in the background (all the work that went into machining (and the creation of the CAD files), the PCB layout, the years of prototyping and the huge amount of money he spent). But for me, this completely unnecessary silkscreen addition ruins it quite a bit. He must be extremely into MLP to put such artwork onto something that took so much effort and time to make. I quite dislike the MLP fandom and can't get away from the feeling that he just put it there to spread the word and force MLP onto a completely different thing. What I mainly dislike about the MLP fandom is the aggressiveness with which they put avatars, fanart, and stickers everywhere. I can't understand what is behind this fandom but I simply find it weird and odd. However, I am absolutely not trying to start another fight about MLP. This is just my personal opinion and I am not saying anybody is wrong about liking it. But I simply don't think this belongs onto a 2500$ commercial product which is quite a reasonable price for how much effort went into it.
I totally understand what you mean, but I don't think he is trying to force MLP on anyone, honestly, I didn't even know he was into it until I saw it on the silkscreen. He doesn't say he is anywhere and none of his logos/avatars show any hints that he is. Although, most of what you mention happens in all fandoms, you also see anime pictures plastered everywhere on forums, and superheroes, video games, etc. Certainly a lot of people in the MLP fandom have an "I don't care what you think" mentality, however, tesla500 definitely does not present himself as that kind of fanatic. He just really likes it and doesn't try to hide it.
SpectrHz Indeed he does not force it on anybody. However he has made or just actively hosts this website which indirectly highlights how strange this fandom can be krontech.ca/bronycan2015/
Many adults enjoy watching kids shows and I don't think either that there is anything wrong. Many parents enjoy watching with their children. But except for MLP nobody goes into the public and actively maintains a fandom which might not be the best thing to do. The best would be to simply enjoy the shows at home and not make a whole fandom. Wait, this is the internet. I forgot.
This tear down was very informative. This is on my radar when it goes live, I'd love to use it in future videos.
That machining work looks great, very professional. Good luck in your funding campaign!
Will be very interested in this when this pops in Kickstarter! Keep up the great work.
Wow, that is amazing work. Just the amount of hours that would go into that is mind boggling. That looks fantastic.
This blew me away, I've been following your stuff for a long time and I'm really loving it all. I aspire to be a lot like you some day. I hope that I am in a situation to afford to back your kickstarter when it goes live because I really would want something like this and to further research like this.
Thanks for making this, I am in when the kickstarter begins! This is amazing and needed!
Awesome build man, I hope this project lives long and prospers!
Brilliant camera, I was sent over here from Taofledermaus' latest video that featured this camera. The price is very fair given just what that camera can do and I would defiantly like to see this project succeed. Also I got a kick out of seeing Twilight on the main board, nice touch, you should keep that there as an Easter egg.
Amazing work sir! Hit me up sometime if you're interested in partnerships and promoting your camera for Science in France! I might reach out to you :)
Awesome work - hope the kickstarter launch goes well - you deserve it.
lovely work sir, i hope you make thousands of them!
OMG, i'm blown away by the work done on this. Bravo!
I admire your approach and enhusiasm on this project!
This is simply amazing work!
i really hope you get far with this project.
You bring a niche hardware to the general public in an amazing way!
I just saw Dave's review and wanted to wish you the best of luck. This thing is capable of becoming a game changer and I hope all your hard work and dedication pays off.I have yet to check out the kickstarter yet but chances are one way or another I'll be budgeting for this in the future after the holidays.
Amazing work, it's great to see what one guy can still do in a garage.
Great project. Looking forward to see the kickstarter. Good luck.
Been seeing these pop up on some of my favorite channels so I figured I would come check it out. Very impressive.
this is really nice. i dont think i need one but its very fun to see how you built it.
Holy crap this is awesome! Pretty much exactly what I've been looking for.
I especially love that scroll wheel thingy, very useful.
Well done!
The first test shot with the balloons (9:27) is really interesting because the first balloon that pops is actually what pops the second balloon, not the dart.
but there are four balloons and they *all* have different colours though so how does the dart work?
it looks like there is a needle in front of the dart
Ah the ol' needle before dart trickerooney. I like your thinking.
Brilliant work. Absolutely love the system engineering that went into this.
As always, thank you very much for all of your insight and selfless efforts!
What an amazing journey tesla ! after all these years is amazing to see what you've accomplished, Im 100% sure the kickstarter will go really well, congrats dude !
FRIGGING awesome !
So, so much in this world that our eyes have not seen......... until now !
I can think of a thousand things that it could be used for and hope someday I'll own one !
A lot of those shots are giving me flash backs to early Mythbusters. For the price, seems like an amazing camera, I hope you're able to get it into production!
Damn. I always hoped to see an update on your camera and it looks pretty solid and well engineered.
The price seems good compared to commercial units and i really want one but still can't afford or justify that now.
I hope your kickstarter is successfull and you can improve it later even more.
Amazing work, my friend. Good luck in the next steps.
Wow what a cool project, how soon before we can get our hands uno of these?
hope soon too :(
check kick-starter now, its up!
Both Cody Don and Ben Krasnow sent me here, I had to obey. You sir are amazing.
Amazing camera, nice quality, amazing how you used almost the same board
that project just oozes awesomeness
I'm going to start saving money now. I will definitely buy one.
My my my, that's exactly what I need. Between yours and Taofledermous' channel I see enough examples to get pretty excited. I see renting a high speed camera as very annoying. Yours would be within the buy range. May I ask some silly questions though. I didn't actually see the W value above 1280. Does it go higher? And will there be any cats in the production facility? :) Nice nice work on your project. Quite amazing.
very beautiful footage!
I'm very into this camera. I want high speed that will fit in a small camera bag and this is perfect. Really like the controller on the back. No need to make it pretty engineers and DP's are going to be using this.
Keep the test footage coming.
Great work! Good luck with kickstarter!
Have watched the camera development since you started the youtube vidos. Always hoped you would go for a production camera. Looks like it won't be long now. Keep up the good work.
Jeff of Taofledermaus sent me. Your camera looks fantastic. Count me in as a buyer. I can't wait for it to go into production. Thanks for all your hard work. I'm looking forward to supporting you with a purchase!
Awesome, can't wait for the kickstarter :)
It took me until I watched this video to actually get what you were on about with milling all these camera housings. First I thought (months back) that you just gonna make a rugged outer case for a commercial camera.
Pretty amazing electronics you got there. Hat's up!
Wow, I don't understand everything you're talking about here, but this is very informative, I can tell you really care about creating a quality product!
Amazing that you designed this yourself.
Awesome. Exited to see the final version :DD
that is some staggering board design there!
Love the result! i have many old C mount lenses i would love to try on this incredible camera !
good luck I hope the campaign goes well and i hope I see it when it goes live!
Years later, the camera (1.4) is still amazing and really kicks ass!!! Nothing comes close in its price range.
Over 3 years later, no one has even tried to compete, I'm astonished! I was expecting a major competitor by now. I think we pushed the price so low no one sees any reason to try.
@@tesla500 I've been looking at high speed video cameras and for my limited budget, the 1.4 fits my price range and does everything I'd want the camera to do. (I'm just a technical nerd who loves playing with equipment, so it's for my own home use.) Pity we're all on lock-down, because I'll just have to wait... (Insert smiling face.)
The consumer based cameras that can shoot high speed are cool, but just too limited for experimenting.
Also, thanks for your response.
I don't understand a word you said, but you are a genius!
Some amazing footage there Tesla500, especially the balloons; both air and gas. That case for the camera looks great too. Love the footage of it being made being shot right on the camera the case is intended for!
This is innovation at it's finest.
This channel are *AWESOME!* I'm subbed.
I just know this is going to be a kick ass Kickstarter project!
Also, What substance is that 14:15? Don't tell me it's water? If so that's amazing.
Yep, that's water.
Excellent work. I hope I can afford one when your campaign starts.
Nice man, wish you all the luck!
WOW! Nice friggin work man.
Amazing piece of hardware. Good job!
Really impressive work!
good job man i hope to see your hard work pay off :)
WHa... but.. what how? I,m speechless.Amazing job!
Wow! looking forward to it's release
I have to say this is just awesome!!!
This is amazing. This might actually change the slow-mo video world. I hope you can get to the point where Economies of Scale apply soon...
incredibly impressive
Wow! Good luck Sir!
Good work done!
That slick case tho! Man this looks soo nice, i mean, for a production ready piece, it's really polished, and i'm not talking about the shine either. I've seen far, far, worst looking products. Hope that the Kickstarter gets a lot of attention because this is a special camera. Love the name too.
About the cables, I think it was HP that had a kit for their older laptops that allowed operation with the machine pulled to pieces. Essentially extension cords for connections. Consider maybe getting some done?? Essentially you need a ribbon cable and a connector. Not really that complicated.
I have a bench version for debugging that's mounted on a board for easy access for debug, forgot to show it here.
Absolutely amazing
Great looking product, well done.
Amazing camera, i definitely want one!
that's some impressive work
You have my attention! I was hoping you would make your camera available since the first time you demoed it. Great footage, where does it max out for frame rate and resolution?
Max resolution is 1280x1024 at 1,050fps, you can do higher rates at lower resolution, eg:
720p 1500fps
640x480 4400fps
640x360 6000fps
640x120 18,000fps
With this sensor architecture, there's no speed benefit to going below 640 pixels width, but vertical resolution can still be traded for speed all the way down to 1 pixel.
How much recording time do you get at those resolutions with the base 8 GB module? Can you increase it with lower color depths from the sensor?
4 seconds with 8GB RAM. You could potentially boost it to 5 seconds by dropping from 12 bit to 8 bit.
So Awesome!
Does it use regular DDR3 / DDR4 SODIMM memory?
Also, do you think it would be possible to add a connector that outputs 5V + 12V (maybe via a 2.5mm stereo jack) with enough current to power a 2.5" SSD?
(would be super useful since it has esata already and if raw video will be availiable with a firmware update a 1TB SSD is probably a reasonable choice)
I love how this project keeps getting better and better! I can't belive you don't have more subscribers than you do.
Rock on and keep us updated! :D /)
(next version with NVMe storage and 1080p ? xD)
tesla500
Great specs, that's what I was hoping to hear. It looks like a camera that could take on the industry heavy hitters for people in the amateur market.
You sir, have won the internet.
