The climatic part about this video for me was the possibility you guys might've discovered some edgecase I missed that causes the cannon to fail. The payoff was that it worked perfectly as intended. I am so relieved it worked out for you guys, what a monumental demonstration of the insane difficulty and logistics involved in getting a redstone build into the game and using it in an SMP context. You guys worked like clockwork, goes to show that designing the thing was only half the effort. I hope this video will show to people that you have to be willing to do the work to get the payoff from a redstone machine.

music discs are commonly used for data storage in Minecraft because they're incredibly compact. For encoding, all you need is chests with shulker boxes, and for decoding, all you need is a dispenser, a jukebox, and some hoppers. If you don't need that much data storage, you can remove the shulker boxes and the dispenser to make it even simpler. You could technically store more data per chest by using a bunch of stackable items and sorting them out and decoding that into information, but the decoder for that becomes massive, hard to work with, and slow, so it's pretty impractical to use, and often larger than a disc-based counterpart, unless you're dealing with hundreds of kilobytes of data or something like that, but I can't imagine a redstone machine that would ever need _that_ much data storage

For anyone wondering, the discs are used cause they give each a unique redstone signal when played, making a way to store information on a more compact way.
So a lectern would've worked as well?

my favorite part about this video is the amount of fun rek, clown and minute seem to have while building it all. yeah, they were nervous and anxious, yeah, they were sleep depriving themselves just to finish this, but the building process gave so much joy... i think this is one of my most fav videos of rek now

also the reason you use discs is because you can read the power level from a jukebox using a comparator, and each disc has a different value, allowing you to store the numbers 1-15 for some really compact data (4 binary bits per disc, 27 discs per chest, and if you had shulkers it would be 27 shulkers per chest) which is a lot of data that can be stored into a single block. It allows for quick and easy encoding/decoding for values like the quantity of tnt to fire for each direction.
