I do find that sometimes I am just not in the right frame of mind for a certain book, but a month or year later, I am then the right person for the right book and it is a great read. So, I do lots of mood reading!
I love hearing what and why people DNF. I don’t often DNF because I am careful about what I start. Videos like this give me clues about books so I can make that call.
That makes sense! I tend to not do a ton of research before I start a book, but knowing what you’re getting into really helps set expectations and discover whether or not it’s for you before you even start.
I am a huge DNF-er! I can usually tell within the first chapter whether or not I'll like the writing style. I appreciate DNF reviews because that helps me weed out TBR books that I probably won't like. Thanks!
What a bummer that so many newbury books weren’t very good! I really enjoyed hearing about your DNF’s. I’m a person who feels obligated to finish almost always, lol. Except sometimes I DNF also. Like with Tale of Genji LOL
DNFing Tale of Genji was 1000000% the right choice 😂 unfortunately I’ve found I haven’t enjoyed a lot of the Newbery nominees the last couple of years, but I REALLY struggled with this year’s!
It's so hard for me to DNF!! I have been a lot better in the last few years since having my kids and significantly less time to read. 😂 I have to pick and choose wisely! I think "Moby Dick" is a book to read with a group. Then you have motivators and others to discuss the info. 👍 Keep up the good work!
DANI! So nice to hear from you ❤️ That makes so much sense! When your reading time is already limited, make sure you read what you love! Such a good point about Moby Dick! That’s how I got through Les Miserables!
I always like to know why someone DNFd a book. Sometimes it helps me know I don't need to waste my time on a book (like your experience with Umberto Eco), and sometimes it helps me know that it might be a book I'm actually interested in.
Yes, I love hearing reasons why a book didn’t work for someone as well! I just always wonder whether or not to share books that I didn’t get very far into 😂
I have levels of DNF.😅 If I'm reading for a patreon read, I'll try to get through the book by using the audio. But i have dnf'd for Kate's group before. If i can tell I'm moody, then I'll "soft DNF" and read it later or try it for awhile longer. If I'm just trying to find a book that grabs me, i don't consider reading 1-2 Ch a true dnf... it's choosing a book. Yes i like hearing why you dnf... even if it's "i ran out of time" or "i plan to try this later"etc.
I don’t usually DNF buddy reads or reads for Patreon, so I totally get that! I’ve been more free with my DNFs the past two years, but I still try to finish most books. Saying you don’t count books that you only read a chapter or two of makes sense. It’s like a taste test! That’s why I pretty much never mention DNFs on my channel unless I got about half of the way through.
It’s not that I don’t ever DNF. But for the most part I finish what I start at some point even if I’m not super much enjoying it. I do a mix of mood reading and planned reading. I enjoy hearing what other DNFed.
Thank you for this video! There's nothing wrong with a dnf if it isn't working. Some we come back to and others just aren't worth it. I hope you enjoy Moby Dick the next time you try it. It wasn't a favorite, but I am very glad I read it. It has some great themes!
I usually DNF books early on. If I've gotten a decent amount through the book, I will want to finish it. It has to be taking an awful turn for my to DNF past the 50% mark.
Yes, it seems easier to just push through and finish if you’ve already invested all that time! I’ve had several this year that I’ve made it 70-80% of the way through before DNFing and I almost finished them, because I put so much time in, but I just couldn’t do it anymore 😂
I try to give a book a fair chance before I DNF it, but if it's not working then it's not working. And at least I know now I didn't miss out by unhauling Hester 😆
Yeah, the historical elements would have really bothered me. I know they have to fudge all kinds of details in a historical fiction, but when it comes to changing details about a well known real person, that feels iffy to me.
I do find that sometimes I am just not in the right frame of mind for a certain book, but a month or year later, I am then the right person for the right book and it is a great read. So, I do lots of mood reading!
I call those "soft DNFs". Because I know it's related to my mood.
I have books like that! I can tell it’s right book, wrong time.
I will DNF pretty easily. It doesn’t happen as often now, for the most part, but I’ve had a few this year.
There’s freedom in the DNF! 😁

I love that you can know so early on whether or not a book will work for you!
I need to DNF more!!😩😩I struggle with this so much😂I always have hope for a book especially classics😂😂😂
I very rarely DNF classics! And the ones I have, I usually have the intention of going back to them (Moby Dick and Don Quixote being prime examples).

I really appreciate hearing about people’s dnfs and reason why. It helps me discern if a book is worth picking up for me.
Definitely! I always love hearing what people love and hate about books 😊

I have no problem DNF-Ing, even if others think it’s the best ever!
That’s wonderful! Life is too short for bad books!

I’d like to have more of a mix of mood reading and planned reading in my life! That’s something I’d like to lean into more next year 😊

Yes, absolutely! Moby Dick is definitely a white whale I will eventually conquer 😜
@@beautifulminutiaeLol 😂
It's very helpful to hear about your dnfs. I know to stay away from Baudolino!
The first chapter already had so much about assaulting virgins during siege that I just couldn’t deal with it 🫣
❤❤❤
DNF queen 😜🤗 I admire that about you!
