Also, what are other foundation fabrics may be used for rag rugs? What characteristics should be prioritized when considering alternative (other than hessian/burlap) fabrics. THX!
Is there a general way to determine how many yards of fabric strips will be required for a particular project? Like a formula similar to what we do in knitting/crocheting a swatch, because so many factors affect the amount of yarn required for a project. In this case, "yarn" would be fabric strips. I'm looking for something like... "x" inches of fabric strip gives you "y" number of loops about 1/4" high and about 1/3" apart (burlap is 10 holes/in., spacing every 3rd hole... 1/3" apart)
youngslink o Some people prefer a traditional rug hook, but it really depends what you learned with first. When people are starting out, it’s nice to have the option to try out a latch hook, as they’re more readily available (and less expensive) than traditional rug hooks.
doonhamerdiva No, you can start wherever you want on the hessian, but the design generally dictates where to start (some places are more logical than others). Where possible, you should try to start in one area and work from there as dotting rag rugging all across a piece of hessian makes it heavy in lots of different places and unwieldy to work on. If possible, I like to start at one end of the rug and work from there. Hope that helps!
Hi Lorna, the fabric strips can be as long as you'd like. It depends on the length of the garment that you're cutting up. I do hope that answers your question. Elspeth
I just enjoy your work! I have that proggy (?) pincer tool and like that the best over the latch hook, although I enjoy traditional latch hook work which I self design
Thank you , your videos are so clear and such a friendly delivery and easy to follow.
I just love your tutorials! Thank you so very much!

Andrea Bell Thanks so much Andrea 😊
How do you wash/clean a rag rug that is using hessian as a base?
I find it much quicker using a traditional rug hook without a latch, generally latch hooks are for latch hooked readicut rugs .

Nice instructing video, BUT the background music is very distracting.
Do you always start at the middle of the hessian?

Can I use yarn instead of fabric on hessian?
I think it defeats the purpose of using old pieces of fabrics or recycling fabric waste
Is hessian the same as burlap?
Karla Ruthford Hi Karla, yes, hessian is the British name for burlap :)
What is the size of the long cloth6
