My Wife and I love your Videos. We favor 1-90 from Chicago Area to Seattle because it has breathtaking scenic views.I also favor I-10 from LA to Jacksonville,Fla.Truthfully I-70 passing through eastern colorado and kansas,Missouri can be a challenge, especially during the Tornado season in March,April and May. There have been quite a few RVs,mostly Travel Trailers that were flipped over by Tornadic and straight line winds along i-70 and I-80 in Wyoming and Iowaand I-70 in kansas.
We recently stopped at Pokagon State Park in Indiana, just west of I-69 and south of the MI state line. The park had tons of amenities at only $20 a night.
Go way up north in Indiana to Shipshewana. Amish country. They have a very large flee market during the summer. The little towns has a lot of shops and the food stores… bring a couple of coolers. Great prices. There a a few hotels but we always stay at a little motel. Der Ruhe blatz. Stay two nights. KATE LOOK IT UP!! lol.
When you get back to Indiana. Look into doing a series on the Hoosier National Forest. Plenty of cool things to see, campgrounds, lakes, Ohio River, dry camping, small river towns and mom and pop stores. Brown , Crawford, Perry, Jackson, Lawrence, Martin and Monroe counties. Over 200,000 acres of national forest in your backyard.
McCormick’s Creek SP, Brown County SP, Clifty Falls SP are all great parks. I live in Evansville and 45 minutes west is Harmonie State Park which is just outside of New Harmony, IN and that is a cool place to walk around because of the history there.
The state parks here in Indiana are beautiful! In the fall you can’t beat Brown County State Park. It is gorgeous! And nearby Nashville is so much fun with its quaint shops (so many) and fun restaurants.
@@Weretherussos I second this! I am born/raised in Indiana and much of my family still lives around Indianapolis (Westfield HS/Purdue University alum). Brown County/Nashville/Bloomington is definitely fantastic. I'd also recommend the Dunes up in NW Indiana near Chicago. Growing up, I also remember being taken to Turkey Run a lot, and my maternal grandparents had their RV parked at a campground near Mississinewa Lake my entire childhood.. so spent many weekends as a kid up there, fishing, camping and boating.
Clifty Falls State Park is the obvious one next door to Madison Indiana. Madison is worth a visit. Our best visits have been when it's rained a few days before so that the falls are flowing well. If you are an old move fan, it's Irene Dunne's hometown. There is a historical marker pointing that out. She was a fantastic person from what I've read about her.
you are not far from Daniel Boone park in Kentucky. This would be a nice trip and not so far to drive too. One more thought, plenty of projects surely need to be done on your land (i.e invasive plant cleanup, brush clrearing, etc) that will keep you busy too
I saw you were at the Kansas Welcome Center near Goodland. We have stayed overnight there several times on trips to RMNP and back. One time, I stayed up and got some nice Milky Way images. In that visitor center, they have one of those images I took displayed near the welcome desk. I sent them a big enlargement and they framed it. Nearly all of the Kansas I-70 rest areas have a separate loop for folks to stay overnight. We have used many of them. There is also a city RV park in Ellis, Kansas that is nice and cheap and is first come, first served. We live in Seymour and have camped in many Indiana state parks. Clifty Falls State Park, in Madison - is probably not far from you. An OK campground, but the river town of Madison is fun to walk around and down by the river is beautiful. And coffee shops ! ! ! I would also strongly suggest, Chain 'O Lakes State Park, at Albion - west of Fort Wayne. This is our all-time favorite Indiana park. Nice campground - great kayaking/canoeing (easy rentals) - through the series of lakes connected by canals. We love this place - we have participated in the trail races there - I ran the 50-miler once. A couple of nice Mom and Pop cafes downtown in Albion. It would be fun if we ran into you there sometime. We have a 2018 Ford Transit DIY van MR 148" - our van build RUclips series is very extensive (non-monetized btw). We met at the van expo in Chattanooga a couple of years ago. I wear my Storyteller shirt all the time! : ) Spring Mill and McCormicks Creek state parks are worth checking out too. Be safe out there!
Thanks for a nice tour via I-15 & I-70. We love the Virgin River Gorge to Central Utah. Now we "run" California to NW Missouri via I-40 to Tucumcari to US-54 diagonally to Wichita, then I-35 to Kansas City....Several variations we've tried to cross Kansas looking for the best interesting views. Not so easy but always an adventure.
interesting facts about MPG with these Transit vans, I live in the SW (New Mexico) and if I’m lucky I get 12-14mpg, but with my trip to Alaska over the past month I’ve been averaging 17.5mpg (4000miles), So my best guess is the quality of fuel.
We drove east from Santa Fe to Central Virginia in our Honda Element the first weekend in June. A lot of that was on I-70 and I-64. Although we didn't get onto I-70 until halfway through Kansas. I remember rain, but don't remember if we hit anything really severe or not.
McCormicks creek is a favorite park of mine. Lots of nice trails (if they have reopened after the tornados). I used to love the very early morning horse rides.
We took this route from OC all the way to SD May 15 our starting date. So beautiful. We made a stop in Windsor CO for a visit! Bryce, Moab Crazy Horse, Mount Rushmore. We encountered a lot of smoke. Came back on the I-40. Playing catch up on your videos love the cruise and Italy.

Thought of a couple other places in Indiana that are fun to visit: Columbus, Indiana has a bunch of cool architecture, also an old ice cream parlor/restaurant, Zaharakov’s. Then West Baden Springs Hotel by French Lick. It was built in the early 20th century and for many years had the largest glass dome in the world over its lobby. Dome is still there, very ornate. You can tour/visit it without having to stay there. (I am from Louisville and live just south of there, so have been going to Southern Indiana all my life.😊)
Definitely Brown County State Park, Indiana Dunes, Spring Mill and Clifty Falls State Parks. New Harmony, Indiana is also interesting, as is Madison, Indiana
Enjoyed the video. We drive out west from Indiana about once a year - not big fans of Vale Pass - because we travel shoulder season, we always seem to encounter snow. This fall we will drive a more southern route. Regarding Indiana State Parks, it is hard to beat Turkey Run SP and Shades SP but we also really enjoy McCormick’s Creek and Indiana Dunes, the latter also allowing us to enjoy the NP in the same trip.
Totally enjoyed watching this long distance trip! I’ve traveled the Rocky Mountaineer train from Calgary to Vancouver - loved that journey! Happy weekend!

@@Weretherussos We are going there mid June. Camping in the Pisgah National Forest and checking out all of the waterfalls in Brevard. Hope you guys have fun. Sorry we are going to miss you.

There are so many great state parks in Indiana! Brown County, Turkey Run, Chain of Lakes (I see lots of people have recommended these). Mounds State Park is small and also very nice for a quick hike. I'm really excited to hear what you think of them. I did a roadtrip with my husband from Illinois to Oregon last year, and the drive back through the plains was rough! There was a big storm in South Dakota and then really bad winds in Minnesota and Iowa. I'm still amazed we managed to stay on the road!
Hoosier National Forest…..Indian-Celina Campground and Tipsaw Campground are both in southern Indiana and very nice. They can both be a bit crowded in the summer on weekends but during the week they are usually very quiet. We camp at O’Bannon several times a year but we think the Hoosier NF campgrounds are nicer. Thanks for sharing your travels!
Hello from a fellow Hoosier! We really like Brown County State Park in Nashville, IN and Prophetstown State Park in West Lafayette. Prophetstown books fast but you may be able to get in when Purdue plays if you book far enough out.
Also, just across the border in Illinois is Kickapoo State Park in Danville, IL. We spent Memorial Day Weekend there, lots of kayaking, mountain biking and hiking available.

We ditch US 70 at Denver and take US 36 going either to Denver or back home to west central Indiana. The road (36) was updated thru Misery and Kansas in expectation of Walt Disney's theme park he was going to build at Marceline, Mo. Unfortunately he died before construction began and the land was sold. But we get the benefit of the updated roads. In fact several miles of US 36 are a two lane "interstate" just after entering Kansas from Misery. Most of the speed limits are 65 or 70 so, especially with the shorter length of travel, you can make almost as much time as o0n 70. And the traffic is almost non-existent in most places.
Hello Kate & Joe, thank you for sharing your video. We noticed that you have a gps, did it come with the van or you purchased separately? We’re looking for something like that for our van. Wish you both have a fun, safe trip.
Great video! Joe - love your Garmin tactix 7 watch. At your first stop in Utah mountains you said you had no data. How does your watch can give you the outside temperature with out a data source?
My guess was it grabbed it before we got up there OR there was just enough for it to get the weather data but not enough for me to pull it up on my phone.
The sign at the rest stop said No Camping. Is sleeping in an RV not considered camping? We tend to avoid I-70 when driving in Colorado but we are shunpikers. Another great video!
Do you ever encounter states that don’t allow overnight parking (sleeping in vehicle) at rest stops? I read conflicting info about what’s allowed and what isn’t. Thanks.
I’m note sure why the rush to get directly back east. Especially after you drive directly to the west coast a few months ago. Time? Commitments? Nothing else to see or do?
@@Weretherussos For some reason I’ve found speed directly correlates to mpg. At 75, it’s gonna hurt. At 65, I tend to get 13 +/-, just have to ignore all the tailgaters!
Don't want to be a party spoiler but that boiling instapot in the middle of your van while driving seems to me like a really bad idea. Imagine you have to make an emergency stop, you risk all that hot boiling stuff flying to the front hitting you in the back! Oh, by the way, I did enjoy the video ;-)

Hello Kate & Joe, thank you for sharing your video. We noticed that you have a gps, did it come with the van or you purchased separately? We’re looking for something like that for our van. Wish you both have a fun, safe trip.
The screen came with our Transit but the GPS you’re seeing is Google Maps on our phone that we play on the screen
Did you know that you can go whitewater rafting downtown South Bend?
Thought you guys were spending the summer on the west coast. Isn’t that why you drove it out there and flew home?
We had a few events we wanted to attend and family to visit. Summer is going to be spent in the midwest/east
The sign at the rest stop said No Camping. Is sleeping in an RV not considered camping?
We tend to avoid I-70 when driving in Colorado but we are shunpikers. Another great video!
Camping is typically defined as sleeping in a tent or similar.
Thx sharing be safe / when you two going get another travel dog with? Miss Leo adventures… I’m sorry but that’s what started following you
Probably not for a long time given how much overseas travel we want to do
💕💕
Very nice video you guys👍❤
Thank you 🤗
WTR,,;;HELLO JIM ,AND KAIT,NICEtrip,but what’s the bit in INDIANA? Waiting for the indi500 ? Stay well,< till,next time, 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
We live in Indiana...that's the bit!
Doesn’t yourvan have steering stabilizers, like safe-t. For battling winds , tractor trailers, etc.
Hi, watching all your videos. I see glimpses of your GPS but can’t tell which one you’re using. Which one is it? Thanks~
We're using our iphones connected to the Carplay on the van's screen.
I want to try route 66 😎
Are you happy with the ford transit?
Love it, much better than the Sprinter
Is this a stealth wealth couple? Great video story
Stealth wealth?
Do you ever encounter states that don’t allow overnight parking (sleeping in vehicle) at rest stops? I read conflicting info about what’s allowed and what isn’t. Thanks.
Yes, here’s a complete list of states that allow it: weretherussos.com/overnight-parking-rest-areas/
I’m note sure why the rush to get directly back east. Especially after you drive directly to the west coast a few months ago.
Time? Commitments? Nothing else to see or do?
We had a few things we needed to get back to after traveling for so long
J & K , come to Northern NJ .
We've been but we probably wont be back on the East coast for a while
Johnson tunnel?
What highway speed were you averaging?
Somewhere around the speed limit which was 75 most of the way
@@Weretherussos For some reason I’ve found speed directly correlates to mpg. At 75, it’s gonna hurt. At 65, I tend to get 13 +/-, just have to ignore all the tailgaters!
What kind of watch does Joe have?.
Hey Rusty - this is the watch I have: amzn.to/3C1vaj3
Absolutely love it.
How did you guys meet? New viewer...

We’ve “tested” it with emergency stops and it doesn’t go anywhere
@@Weretherussos That's a good thing but that test was probabely not as extreme as a real situation!
Hi Russos! Love all the great content, books and RV resources on your website. We are new to RV life. We have a STO Mode LT and are based in Evansville, IN. Hope to meet up someday around Southern IN or out on the road. Indiana has some great State Parks, we are planning a family camping trip to Lincoln in September and have enjoyed spending time at Brown County and Shakamak.
Don’t take the interstate, it such a boring drive. Yes, western Colorado on I-70 has some merit, but secondary roads are much more enjoyable.
Agreed except when you're trying to make miles.
