    I sold this Makita cordless power drill in the local paper. And then six months later, I received the very same one back as a Christmas present from my brother-in-law, minus the power pack.

    Is it possible to change to a Rohm chuck like you can on other brands and solve it that way? It sucks to have to spend extra money on an already expensive drill but perhaps it could help..?

    Hello, sorry for my language mistakes, I'm writing from Poland. I have had Makita tools for over 15 years, I think I have 25 of them. I've never had a problem like this with Makita screwdrivers. I simply put on the drill, pull the trigger and electrically tighten it. Then I turn the screwdriver head by hand once until I hear the click of the trapdoor. and done. I don't remember a situation when the drill fell out on its own. I'm not trolling you, but you seem to have bad drilling technique. Regards

    • @Enares
      @Enares  Год назад +2

      Hi Don, I'm sure the majority of these drills are used without fault. However I'm pushing the Torque limits by threaded steel holes using taps. The clamping force of the Makita chuck is no where near good enough for this. However the likes of other brands seem to fare much better. Go put a 10mm drill in your chuck and tighten it until the clutch locking mechanism slips. I can do this with my hands. Other makes would need a long wrench or similar to get the clutch to fail.

    I have the exact same problem with a DDF486, which is quite exasperating, i'm currently in the process of sending it to makita since it is still under warranty.
    I have found out that I have to lock the chuck as much as possible so that I will be able to unlock it, otherwise it does exactly what you show, it skips and you can hear the insides turning. Its frustrating because it feels like i'm damaging the gears when this happens which drives me nuts when I'm quickly changing tools ..

    I have a bin of trashed makita drills with clutches that are blown out from my abuse*. So i bought same drill dhp486 from home depot with the 2 year warranty. Its crunchy like that and wont hold torque so now ill go get a replacement. 😊. *if i drill a 4" hole in a 2x6 and it gives up b4 my wrist is mangled the hole doesnt drill. As much as I have all Makita and love every tool except their drills... I may have to go back to DeWalt where that drill won't stop until the battery is on fire and my wrist is broke in four places but the hole gets drilled hard and fast. Honestly time is money and I really don't care about $100 drill. I also use this for tapping metal and I constantly am running it through the clutch Breakaway and reversing it. You can't use the new electronic clutches to tap because they don't have the impact. They just stop. Impact is how the tap advances a few degrees of a turn and then you reverse it and keep plowing through the metal I can gun tap 3/8 and 1/4 in into quarter thick stainless metal in seconds so if I destroy a drill I don't care but I would like it to at least make it through two holes before it goes into the bucket of perfectly good drills with clutches that aren't worth a s... T.

      It's just a shame that you can get most other brands chucks much tighter than the Makita ones. I do a lot of tapping holes with my cordless drills so I need it to grab the bit very tight.

    • @123ChrisG
      @123ChrisG 2 года назад

      I don’t think it’s normal because my bits and mixer paddles actually fall out now, this definitely didn’t happen when I got the drill or with any other drill i have. It has changed and will slip easier as if it has low battery so I’m thinking it is broken, or something inside has worn out.

  • @epineh
    @epineh 2 года назад +2

    In my experience that normally happens with makita drills after a while, tightening by pulling the trigger with a battery installed can help sometimes. I've got the same drill, bought a month ago and the hammer/drill/clutch selector is basically useless, set on drill like pretty much every tradesman would and it kinda has a bit of hammer when using drill bits, very lame. I'll just use my backup Makita drill...oh wait it is in for repairs for the third time. Time to look at other brands I think.

      É muito chato isso, a makita não tem nenhuma consideração pelo cliente, e simplesmente não se mexe para resolver esse problema da dhp 486. Eu moro no Brasil, e o custo de uma máquina dessa chega a 500 USD em sua versão completa, onde o salário mínimo é entorno de 400 USD. Eu gostaria muito de comprar uma mas eu faço um investimento desse sabendo que a máquina já vem com defeito de fábrica. É triste o descaso deles com o cliente.

You will instantly hear and feel a ratcheting you’ve never noticed before, that is the locking mechanism. Give that a try and you will finally know the truth about keyless chucks
