They also vastly underestimated the pre-invasion bombing and bombardments effectiveness, the only real effective ship to shore fire was when the destroyers pushed in dangerously close to beaching to direct fire on emplacements on Omaha.

Those are generally fired from helicopters. Dunno if they use laser sights for that, doubt it.
