A pretty clear indication that the end was near. In 1981, anyone wanting lip-synched performances would likely have found Solid Gold to be a more enticing offering.
Wow, what a surprise! This is yet another look of Daryl's evolving. Looks to be about 1981? And with the hair color and exact hairstyle as MacGuyver! I used to have a crush on him. (Richard Dean Anderson). So did alot of ladies. But I am long over that. Funny huh. Now I got a crush on Daryl Hall. 💗 Were you mad at this session, because you don't seem like yourself here?
They were, from their beginnings up till the end of the decade, but starting at around 78 or 79 they started adding lip-synching to studio recordings to their repertoire. Maybe the curator who owns this channel can shed some light on why this happened? Don't want to speculate as I really do have so much respect for the show and its creators. All I know is that while the theatrics and pageantry were a constant in the show all throughout, and I love them no matter when they happened - the live performances back in the day were very much superior to the lip-synch performances of later in their run.
I remember arguing all the time with my friend back then about whether a TV performance was live or synced. He always believed that everything was performed live, even in a case like this when the audience starts applauding before the song is over and then the song fades out.
THAT'S SO INCREDIBLY, HILARIOUSLY, DROP-DEAD FUNNY!!! I've written, what it seems like term papers and award winning thesis' about this very issue on SCORES & SCORES of "lip-synched' video clips here on You Tube over the last two decades. The fact is, "most" people, who are not either musicians, or even musicly inclined, but just listen to songs as they pass by & by...you just CAN'T FOR THE LIVING LIFE OF YOU, convince them otherwise. (It's actually, kinda mind boggling.) Actually, some artists, like even Hall & Oates, Martha Davis from The Motels, Stevie Nicks, etc, are pretty darn good at lip syncing, but A-listers like Deborah Harry from Blondie, Rod Stewart AND ESPECIALLY (believe it or not) Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones are HORRIFIC at lip syncing, in so much, that music videos like "MISS YOU" only used the background instrumental track for Richards, Woods, Wyman & Watts to sync to, BUT Jagger did his part LIVE into a hot Shure SM-58 microphone. Jagger couldn't repeat himself TWICE, if his LIFE or LIPS, depended on it...!!! BolsaChicaRadio
My Gods... This song is PURE Magic.

I thought midnight special was all about live music...

I was so excited clicking! Hoped to see this being played live back in the day! 😔

@@BolsaChicaRadioInteresting about Jagger
😊
Its amazing how they duplicated the studio recording perfectly. What a band, not many can do such a feat live. Hell the same people are not even there
This is all lip synced i'm afraid...
Best duo since Mccartney/Lennon
It was really sad when artists on The Midnight Special stopped singing live. Made worse with some terrible lip syncing.
Hall and Oates could have played live, they are great.
Even Christopher Cross played live same time 😎
@@tb0yp Very true!
Agreed.
Yes, I had to turn it off when the lip synching became obvious. Back a foot away from the mic but have constant volume? Forgetttit.
Imagine knowing that Daryl Hall will end up seeking a restraining order against John Oates 45 years later while both are in their 70s lol
its a total shame!! so stupid!! they both have money money than the will ever need!!
Backing tracks 😅😅😅
They are a great live act so the lip syncing here was not necessary. Must’ve been a practical/technical reason for TMS towards the later years.
Why did they lip sync this performance
Rare lip sync on Midnight Special. Great song but I would have preferred a live version instead.
Lol, the miming is pretty bad. Love the channel tho
Surprised Oates didn't pull a KeithMoon and play his part obviously wrong
Why are they miming?? Hall and Oates had crazy levels of talent. They didn't need to mime. Shame on Midnight Special for doing this.
Really disappointed that this was mimed...
Ah, yes...the EARLY days of lip sync!
Why playback….take it away
Great effort for a fantastic song and so obviously lip synched. So sad.
coke goblins
Lip sync= lame
BOOO!!! We don’t want lip synced fake performances on the Midnight Special! MS was known for its LIVE performances!!!
I saw them in ‘83 at the Forum in Montreal …excellent concert.
Shame this performance was lip synched.🤨
Lip synch
bäh, Playback
Lip syncing..What a shame..
Bad lip syncing. Very rare on TMS.
