  • Perennial plants typically take much longer to grow and mature to seed-bearing age. Their lifecycle makes it even more critical to sustainably harvest adult plants. We take a look at several ways to achieve this including harvesting the stalk as well as planting back the leafy tops.

Hi Brian, yes, it can form great colonies in moist places, as Margaret and Craig talk about!

Hi Mark! This is another plant known as yellowroot, but not goldenseal, which is also commonly called yellowroot. This one is another interesting woodland herb that grows in huge colonies in damp creekside areas.

@@exforestfarming yup. Thanks I did look it up and found there are two. Nice to find this out I have seen it as well but like you said creek banks and along railroads where it moist and cool. I also have noticed the two soil differences as well. Thanks for educating

Goldenseal is in the same family but it's properties are different. They both have yellow roots because of the berberine but they are different.

Hi there, please visit our website appalachianforestfarmers.org to learn more about our regional partners who work with local suppliers for planting stock. You can also find seeds from several online sources.

Where do you sell your yellow root at because I dug a bunch of yellow root because these morons here in west Virginia advertised that they buy yellow root and when I took it in they wouldn't buy it they only buy golden seal so needless to sa thoroughly passed off and should probably force them to buy it since they advertised buying yellow root!!! Anyway just need some help with somewhere to sell my root, as I really would hate to just waste it. So I beg you please let me know of somewhere in either West Virginia or a nearby state so I can sell my root, any help would be appreciated.

Homeopathy has a big need for Goldenseal root(Hydrastis Canadensis) as an anti-psychotic remedy. Indian homeopathic medicine manufacturing companies import medicinal plants from worldwide.

Is there a type of tree that would work best on the site that I'm planning to plant this Yellowroot? I heard poplar is the best and to avoid maple but what if I have a mix of trees? Should I go with another site that's only poplar?

I would not worry too awfully much. As you can see the video is shot in a mixed forest.
