  • China's retail sales data in May beat expectations, but BofA Global Research Chief Greater China Economist Helen Qiao says consumer confidence remains weak due to concerns about future income prospects. Jessica Gleeson, a former China executive who now runs her own retail consultancy, shares her observations in Shanghai, saying Chinese consumers are now focusing on health and wellness. They discuss the outlook for Chinese consumption on "Bloomberg: The China Show".

What a stupid question about China's consumers not spend like the US after the end of the lockdown! In the US when people is locked up during Covid19, the US gov't dropped helicopter money to it's citizens so it accumulate cash during the lockdown and this together with normal spending that is withheld during the lockdown resulted in revenge spending. China didn't do that so the households not only have no income during the lockdown it has to spend extra on items like face masks, extra senitary items...... So they are pretty poor out of the lockdown. No money no revenge spending! Simple as that!

There was a surge for tourism, hospitalities and restaurants after lock down.

It’s not that simple. A lot of people didn’t lose their jobs during the lockdown. They don’t spend because they worry about the future. There’s no single answer to that. The helicopter money you talked about isn’t the only reason for the high inflation either.

Yes, it's fast recovering in all major cities all over China, and millions of overseas tourists are coming into China to tour & spend after Chinese visa waiver was offered to many friendly countries since several months ago!

Theres nothing in the numbers suggesting this. Chinese wages are not going up and chinese ppl already do not consume as much.

Chinese 🇨🇳 property sector, which accounts for 30% of GDP, is crashing.
    - Exports and imports, accounting for 37% GDP, are down.
    - Foreign investment (FDI) is falling over 90%, lowest in 3 decades.
    - Foreign visitors are down 96% compared to the pre-pandemic level in 2019.
    - Consumer prices are experiencing deflation.
    - Youth unemployment hits over 21%, a record.
    - Its fast-shrinking workforce is 10 years older than neighboring countries.
*Still, China keeps reporting outrageous GDP numbers.* Lol
Where does the growth come from?
