This has that timeless filmic quality that is sorely missing too often from the silver screen nowadays. It feels like it could have come out in the 80s, 90s or 00s and I love it.
In the late 80's, Kevin ran into difficulty securing the financing for Dances with Wolves and several movie studios rejected the project along the way. He was told then the Western genre was dead and the film too long. Not one to be deterred by the naysayers, he pushed forward to put it all together. The end result was a picture that won 7 Academy awards, grossed over $400 million worldwide (1990 dollars) and was named by critics as one of the best films of that year. As history shows, this is an actor/director who has the guts to forge his own path. Hats off to you, Mr. Costner, for taking another gamble with this latest Western. I for one hope this upcoming film will have a scene reminiscent of the buffalo hunt with the Lakota from Dances with Wolves (epic).
I saw an article earlier where Kevin describes in detail the experience with 3500 Buffalo! It was Cannes interview. I hope you can find it. Unforgettable 😊
For me dances with wolves is easily in my top 5 movies of all times with out a question loved every bit of it can’t believe I only came across it recently
Just read that Kevin Costner's 13-year-old son is making his film debut! You can see him about a minute into the trailer. He's the kid helping some women (who we think are his mother and sister) into the hidden shelter in the floor. This movie looks so good. I'm psyched!
His older daughter played an small part also back in 1990 "Dances with Wolves". She played then young "Stands with a Fist" character when her house and family were ravaged by a Pawnee War Party.
@@reneestevez7193 and I believe his other two kids were in the movie. They were kids just running around playing. His then wife was there as well in that scene.

Thank you so much for this. Free Range has always been a top 5 Western for me. This is going to compete with the best. Thanks again. JF
@hambone2335 this is made like the westerns of old. this isn't Avengers on the frontier, dipshit.. if you don't like it, move on down the bench. You won't be missed. The cinematography is gorgeous, the characters are unique and inventive. The acting is superb. This is what cinema used to be about. Storytelling. If you like straight to the point no story buildup disney starwars type ish, then do you. This feels like a real western should. I'm telling you, enjoy it while you can because eventually you will live in a world without Clint Eastwood and Kevin Costner. And you can't tell me that opening scene wasn't absolutely breathtaking.
I have a feeling this is going to be THE best western ever made. Kevin Costner is SIXTY NINE YEARS OLD. I will never forget the night I watched 'Dances With Wolves' with my parents as a young teenager on a four channel tube display TV. We all sat there for three hours and never said a word even through the commercials. I took my young wife to a one off showing of the directors cut at the cinema and I had tears rolling down my face at the end scene. This is looking like another masterpiece from Kevin Costner.
My parents and I were on a road trip through South Dakota shortly after filming wrapped on Dances With Wolves. A lot of the props, the indian village, dead buffalo carcasses, and the living horse that played Cisco were all at 1880 Town. I got to see them all and feed/pet Cisco! Movie came out shortly after that and it's been one of my favorites ever since.
I agree Any discussion of westerns has to include Dances With Wolves and Once Upon a Time in the West. I can't bring myself to read the sequel to Dances With Wolves because it delves deeply into the horrible things that happened to the Native Americans. Perhaps Costner will bring some of that into Horizon since he never filmed the sequel.
None of that fake, ridiculous digital stuff. I will probably see it twice this weekend. It's a film with real people in a real location. It is good work like this that will send people back to the box office.
You’re nuts. Robert Duvall, - lonesome, Dove, and every other western he was in John Wayne - I don’t need to say more than that… Clint Eastwood - remember Clint Eastwood got his start in the TV show rawhide and then went on to do westerns Is he good? Yes, but he is not the goat.
@@MatthewM575 long lost?? lol yup you’re crazy John Wayne sub par?? You’re really crazy. Go back and watch some Clint Eastwood and John Wayne because you obviously haven’t And don’t even get me started with Robert Duvall I’m sure you haven’t watched him either.
Saw it today with my daughter & going to see it with my Mom in a few more days. Very captivating! Kevin plays the lead so well! His Son was great also. Great western!!
It's because it was the last time humanity had its soul. Even though it was a tough time...the world had yet to become what it is today. Today's world is appalling. I'd jump in a time machine and head right to 1870 if I could. I find myself unable to relate to most ppl nowadays.
Deadwood, Godless, Yellowstone all are superb Westerns in their own right. As far as Costner goes, Dances with Wolves will be hard to top. Then there's Tombstone and The Unforgiven and Outlaw Jose Wales.
@@jerardnorgren3411 Open Range was a great Western with Costner and was horribly overlooked, and 3:10 to Yuma was great that came out with a few years of it

don’t know what he is talking about, but I agree, this is a sweet film telling a cool story about the iconic American West. I’m a law student in a Western State, and I’m big into real property, and it’s one of the coolest things to see something in the county deed books that reads “US Government gives _____ Acreage to John Sykes, September 19, 1893.” And read as it is goes from unconquered land passed, weathering the storms and soon grows to be into a modern town. “Will Sykes, grandson of John Sykes, gives _______ acreage to the City of Oklahoma City for to be developed into a hospital, February 13, 1963.” I’m making up the exact dates and names, but that’s super cool to watch happen.
Just saw Chapter 1...Amazing acting, costumes, settings, cinematography. I can't wait for Chapter 2, 3 & 4. I think it captured life at that time when the West territory was expanding; the good, the bad and ugly.
I'm just supposing, but I get the kind of intuition that could be kinda like Sergio Leone ones. But obviously I could have thought wrong, let's see until the end of the saga.

He was the Cinematographer with Kevin on Open Range as well as the movie Crash which won three Oscars, including Best Picture. This info is not mentioned in the description above. J. Michael worked as a Steadicam Operator on Field of Dreams where he met Kevin. He also worked on Dances with Wolves and JFK as a camera operator and steadicam operator. Kevin and J. Michael has worked together off and on for 35 years. The cinematography on these films is epic! Congratulations J. Michael! I love your work on Titanic too!
I bought this on Amazon prime last night and watched it and absolutely loved it! Well worth the price!! Kevin Costner is a fabulous actor and the only thing I have to say about this is he should be in it more himself. Can’t wait to see the next chapters.
Just saw "Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter One," and I'll tell you right now, it is one of the very best films of the year from star and director Kevin Costner. I can NOT wait for Chapter Two next month. It didn't even feel like three hours! Costner has made a true screen western epic that was worth every penny he invested in the two part film. And he SHOULD make two more he's got planned! - L.B.
This is actually exciting for someone like me who was weaned on the classics - Hondo, The Searchers, How The West Was Won, Broken Arrow, Red River, Shane, The Ox-Bow Incident, True Grit, Jeremiah Johnson, and The Cowboys. Though made for television, Lonesome Dove is a classic in its own right. But there have been very few really good westerns since the John Wayne, James Stewart, Henry Fonda era. I can really count them on one hand - Silverado, Dances With Wolves, Tombstone, Open Range, and Broken Trail (also made for television by American Movie Classics). Westerns are by far my favorite purely American movie genre. So I'm definitely all in and grateful that Kevin Costner has seen fit to make this saga and hope it's a winner for him.
Doesn’t it look great. The master of film, brought to the screen. What a great human being. Kevin Costner your parents would be so proud. As we all are. Master of your craft. Thankyou😊
@@ekklesiast Agreed, and he has made many flops in his career. Not a particularly choosy actor it would seem. This one is going to lose perhaps $100 million.
I think that westerns are the only time Costner shines. I'm not saying any other movie he's made is bad, but when he's in a period piece, he always does such a great job. 😊😊
It's an over bloated ego project. And the split narrative runs very thin. The people praising Costner in the comments obviously didn't show up to the cinema, cause it's a huge box office bomb. The fact there are 3 more of these coming out, all on his own dime, shows sometimes you need production company interference. But you still gotta admire his attempt
I already love it for using a traditional cinematography, instead of the modern dark, Netflix type, with the same color grading as all the mass produced movies and shows
We saw this movie and really liked it. The beginning for some viewers, may seem confusing as Costner shows a "slice of life" from the 1800s American experiences from several families. It comes together and promises to have more in future episodes. Very nice. (Remember How the West Was Won... approach)
@@guyfawkes8384 "it sucked" is not a credible critique of any film. Well, maybe some but I doubt this film sucked. Maybe you just have a short attention span and prefer something from Jason Statham? Not that all Statham's films are bad.

Really brought a taste of realism to the whole thing.
@@guyfawkes8384 Hmm, I'll keep an eye open for these problems. They may not matter to me if the story is really engaging. I do remember finding literally brand new clothing without a wrinkle in them being not realistic on so many TV series in the 1980s. But in the 1860s virtually everything was made of wool, denim not yet being invented IIRC, and cotton was used for the rest. I may be wrong about this but decent quality wool will hold its shape quite well for a fair while. So it may not be odd for the period. Costner is usually very careful in the details. In "Open Range" he made sure that all the glass used in that 1870s Western was of the wavy variety because perfectly flat and clear glass had not yet come into use. 🤠

With all due respect, that translation is not accurate. Read his words very carefully. My opinion is that the translation is more accurately stated thusly: "If you show our people the respect we deserve, then my ancestors in the thousands will give you much love Kevin❤" Don't twist a good man's words or your destructive action will recoil upon you without the need for the enemy to even look in your direction. This movie was so good. It's been a long time since I've really enjoyed a movie. Loved it.
One of the best films in the history of Hollywood. Easily Top 20.

DWW is a masterpiece. It also had John Barry's score.
Just read that Kevin Costner's 13-year-old son is making his film debut! You can see him about a minute into the trailer. He's the kid helping some women (who we think are his mother and sister) into the hidden shelter in the floor. This movie looks so good. I'm psyched!

Kevin Costner and Westerns are a match made in cinematic heaven.
I don't know if Mr Costner will ever see this, but my God, this is a beautiful film.
The art of cinema is indeed dead, but not the art of storytelling.
Kevin, this is an absolute masterpiece.
Thank you so much for this. Free Range has always been a top 5 Western for me. This is going to compete with the best. Thanks again. JF
This is the worst movie ever made. How can you say it is good?

Lonesome dove is the best western ever made. This will be good but it won’t be better than LD
Yea no. It will not be that.

It’s still incredible how short a period the “Wild West” was, but has burnt such a hot mark into the American psyche, and by extension the world.
Its the pioneering part of Western history that draws people in and the gunfighter/evil cattle/land baron part of it is icing on the cake
Most of it is myth though. It speaks to us because it is mythology that created the history that we want to be true.
