    Hey, Egyptians, I play them!
Abydos, if I'm reading the rules right, gets 9 dice on Defense Rolls because of its special rules, and that's pretty good. Mind you, with armored decking, your opponent will avoid using air weapons on you anyways.... Also, the small Rocket Batteries are 5 points each for the Abydos, which feels outrageous when it's what's on the box art and the promo pictures. Oops All Rockets is still nice for staying out of the way, though. The Abydos can peek out behind terrain and hit one target with rockets. Also, the hull is so huge I have used it to effectively protect another unit I wanted to keep. It's like a Super Support piece, not a front-liner, but should be close to them for max effect and treated as if it's not going to sink things every turn.
I haven't played the Pharos yet and I kinda don't want to. It's very fragile, and it's got around 4 different attacks, depending on how you build, that each prefer different ranges, with the H Broadsides wanting side targets. I agree with hiding it and carefully picking your targets, but you need a massive island to hide it behind. The Abydos Hull is absolutely colossal and is *very* easy to see. Also, picking off one target at a time requires your opponent playing into that. I may play more spread out, but my opponent likes having a block of concentrated units. The moment I peek my stern out, there is a lot of firepower coming my way.
The Tanis. I've played this one a lot and it ain't worth it. It has a portal generator, which it really needs to take advantage of, BUT! Egyptian Portal Support is uncommon, expensive, and a bad idea. It's almost twice the cost of a good ol' Portal Pasha. The Tanis chucks 8 Khepri tokens (we call them bees here, after the insect). Khepri are stronger than normal SRS, as they have more good keywords, but they're shorter-ranged, they cannot target Submerged units, and you get less of them ending up with a smaller dice pool. I have not had a Tanis' bees work out as well as a Suleiman's planes. The Tanis does have good firepower for a Carrier - and that is a trap. The Suleiman is the best carrier because it carries SRS and does just about nothing else. The Tanis is dividing its focus with more guns and some repair capability, much to its own detriment. Also, it's a massive miniature. Your opponent can spot it very easily, and it will take all the weapon-fire, because letting a carrier ship carry at max capacity is a bad idea. I rarely have this ship live past turn 2. Go with the Abydos.
The Sobek: I've played this unit once, to test out Portal Support. They lived the longest because they were literally inoffensive. Almost half the Sobek's rules aren't effective right now, but it looks to be good at objectives. It can control enemy flow with mines, remove enemy Landers and deploy its own. Plus, the Sobek has a 9 Fray, where other M2 Egyptians have only 7. I am really tempted to try giving them Fury Generators next outing, for some serious boarding crafts, but the Order probably does it better.
The Mesektet: I've only used them a few times, but that's literally because I'm entranced by the fancy weapons other M2 skimmers have. That Heavy Torpedo is probably the single most dangerous weapon on the M2s, and thanks to silly rules, land isn't much of an obstacle. Then you get to use the light turrets - and suddenly realize how nasty that many light turrets is. The Mesektet is a good ship, able to start outflanking foes and can lay down some serious hurt. I just need to use it more, but everything is so expensive!
The Sabah: I love this ship. Equip it with Rockets, they're free and work with Rocket Barrage. If you're ever out of missiles, they can be a decent backup. They don't punch as hard as other Cruise Missile ships, but hilariously, the Cruise Missiles are 360 degrees and the light turrets can fire backwards. This ship can spend its life running away and still be as effective as going into battle. It is legitimately great. Dear Warcradle: Please Don't Nerf This Ship.
The Mandjet: It's expensive, but it's got some serious firepower. Heavy Magnet Bombards haven't been effective when I play them, due to aerial. I need to use the broadsides more, but Egyptians are a very forward-facing faction at Mass 2 and up. Problem is, with Egypt, it's a matter of points, and the Mass 1 ships are amazing in this aspect. I'd go for the Mesektets or the Sabah over this, just because of points. In low-point cost games, though, it's more worth it because you cannot spare the points for an Abydos hull then.
Hashashins: They're very good! They're side-focused, which means that, though they like being on the flanks, their torps are a bit harder to use. They're faster than the Khopesh, the actual fast skimmers, because of Gun Runner. But for like 2 points more per ship, they're pretty much better. A full squad of 5, equipped with all Aether Lances, is 250 points. That's 10 Aether Lances. That is Lethal. It's got to be one of the best deals in the faction. But they're very vulnerable to blast and die easily. They are still one of the best ships Egypt can field.
Khopesh: Better at flanking than the Hashy-slashies with Vanguard, and Minesweeper is a kinda 'eh' ability. Mines are dangerous, but are hard-countered, so it doesn't feel good to take mines in case they're countered, and it doesn't feel feel good to take mine sweepers in case there's no mines. They're almost as good as Hashashins, though. My last list, I downgraded Hashies to Khopesh and literally the points let me buy D-Cannons for my Mehmed. That was worth it. Also, the way I play my Egyptian Destroyers, they're on the flanks and often swing around either in front of or behind major enemy targets. I don't get to use Micro-Torps that much because the Destroyers are both side-focused, and I didn't miss them too much with the Khopesh. They are still very good; 10 Aether Lances is a ludicrous number of dice and I enjoy it.
I got the Abydos box after I got my Suleiman and Anatolia boxes (with gubbins for starting), but I also got 3 of them.... It was a bad idea because honestly, none of the Abydos variants are that good. The best one is probably the Abydos, but that's because there's less incentive to target it because it doesn't chuck out as much firepower or lethal bees. Mesektet and Sabah are top picks for the M2, while the Mandjet is a better gunship for flagship purposes and the Sobek isn't all there yet. The Mass 1s, regardless of what you pick, are good choices, comparatively affordable standing next to their bulkier buddies, and are very dangerous at full squad size.
The Egyptians love their Light Turrets. There are so many light turrets on these ships it's ridiculous. It means they're more close-ranged than the Sultanate frequently, but have enough special weapons that their long-ranged game isn't suffering. And yes, the torpedoes are special weapons. It's sad, but true. The Abydos hull is modeled with Torpedo Tubes, but those are unused. It makes me sad, but if it keeps the point cost down.... Skimming boosts their costs up, and it feels a bit mixed. You need to remember what they're immune to, and that can remove a lot of sources of pain, but dedicated rammers and boarders sometimes have ways around the Skimmer position trait. Hiding is neat, but nothing new and it's contingent on the terrain being big enough to hide behind. The Abydos hull flat-out does not hide well. it's too damned large.

Great advice on the Abydos box. Thanks a lot.
I have my own take on the egyptians so far:
    Mass 4s:
They are glass canons alright. Large target, low citadel armor and the model covers quite some ground - so it is almost impossible to hide from the enemy, unless you play with huge pieces of terrain. As for the flags itself:
    Abydos
I did not like it at first but it is possibly the most efficient of the three, mainly because it has the least threat value to the enemy This is a pure supporter and not a fighter, so the enemy might fire at other ships first.
    Pharos:
Man, i wanted to like the Pharos, but no way in its current form. It wants to get to point blank range - unfortunatly, with a laughable citadel armor of 13 it will never gat there. This ship need some buffs, right now its borderline unusuable.
    Tanis
At first i thought this might be the strongest one, but as games show, the short range of the Khepri SRS are its achilles heel. You need to get closer to the enemy or you need portal support from somewhere else. And mo matter what, you are a juicy target for yout enemy who will happily cripple you with ease.
    Mass 2:
Basically bread and butter stats - armor/citadel 6/12, 4/4 hull points. However you pay premium for skimming, so try to use it. Now, the Ships:
    Mandjet:
The heavy cruiser type, strong but no better armor or more hull points. You can use 2 as a flagship unit for the egyptians, which might be a good idea if you dont want to bring a Mass 4. Stand alone as a regular they are very costly however.
    Mesektet:
The bread and butter on paper. 3 gun batteries are better then you might think and it also haa heavy torpedos. Could also be the one to get the Khepri upgrade, hovever, the ship does become umcomfortably expensive if you use them.
    Sabah:
The best of the bunch. Great artillery piece. Switch to rockets as secondaries. You want to field them with an Abydos, because the missile silos will get empty eventually. Fingers crossed this will not be nerfed in 3.06 - like the Unions poor Washington in 3.05.
    Sobek:
Half of its rules are not relevant right now. Can switch its one heavy weapon for a generator, so it might be the one egyptian ship to drop a portal for a Tanis. However it is quite expensive for this singular role. (the turkish Pasha is way better here). I wont play it right now.
    Mass 1:
Fast and deadly - as most of the mass 1s.
    Hashashin:
Micro torps, two gun batteries and gun runner. Shadow Hunter on top. Nuff said. Really great mass 1. Play this.
    Kopesh:
Only 2 points cheaper then the Hashashin but loses the torps and gun runner for Vanguard deployment. Not worth it.

As cool as they look, and as interesting their movement shenanigans are (not to mention portals), I'd still rather have something like Imperium or Empire at the end of the day. I need a faction with staying power but also isn't "boring."
