    This was initially planned has a 2 part book by Chris and Jim but the Marvel heads shot them down and said you have one book. Jim mentioned this at a comic con in Calgary where I got my 268 signed by him. One of the best fan days of my life.

    Not a comic book buff by a long shot, but there was a period in the 90s where all Jim Lee X-Men works were a no-brainer to pick up. I am 43, and the opening here wherein you talk about the Psylocke run of issues made me smile because that is exactly when I got into these books. I suppose every 8-18 year old did. There was something about the art that was so insanely beautiful, and although the storylines were ridiculously convoluted, the art was...well, perfect for the 10 year old me. This book was the pinnacle of that. Even had the Wolverine v Cap poster over my bed.
    Thanks for this review, and your insight. It was so fun to listen to you guys talk about what it meant to see these images as kids and how it influenced your art.

    My first issue of X-men!!! The two panels of Jubiliee looking under her blouse always struck me as a very unusual kind of storytelling in a comic like this from this era. I think it was only after seeing it again as a grown-up I really understood what was conveyed there. Also, when I was a kid reading Uncanny JUbiliee was one of my favorite characters - she totally served that same purpose of being like a Robin character you could relate to as a younger reader. In hindsight I guess she also bridges that weird space between being a kid and starting to become an attractive woman which I guess is very enticing for a shy 12-year old boy reading this !

    For those of us who played the Capcom Marvel arcade games of the 90’s. You instantly recognize a lot of the artwork in this issue that was used in the video games. This issue particularly was used a lot in marvel super heroes. As X-Men issue 1 was used in X-Men: Children of the Atom

  • @redvitaminblue
    @redvitaminblue 3 года назад +5

    Yeah, you're right - this is one of the only self-contained issues during the whole post-Siege Perilous era. Nothing here had any real consequences for the main continuity at the time, which was an outlier for monthly Claremont. Nonetheless, 268 is a gem.
    Also, good point about the affective differences between Lee and his Image peers, particularly Liefeld. Lee was much more technically sound and his compositions were often quite beautiful, but there was a just a reckless, frenetic energy communicated by early Liefeld which had a specific appeal. His stuff was full of the 'danger' and attitude that adolescent boys tend to seek out and emulate, even boys like myself who would have had trouble fighting his way out of a wet paper bag in '91. It's a classic stage of psychosocial development and the search for masculine identity - a journey that Liefeld's X-Force and metal music and wallet chains helped to facilitate for many of us.

    • @GeorgeFord
      @GeorgeFord 3 года назад +1

      I agree with you. Lee's heavily-detailed style in Uncanny as well as adjective-less X-Men had me salivating. When I picked up WILDCats #1, I was like "Oh. Okay." I mean, I was still floored by the awesome art, but I was kinda disappointed that it seemed to lack that extra 'oomph' I had grown to expect from him. It was still superb work, don't get me wrong, and I bought every issue he drew.

    • @RetroKid
      @RetroKid 3 года назад +1

      Probably due to deadlines being tighter because they were doing more of the work themselves, in addition to being artists.
      I do remember when he stopped drawing WildCATS and Travis Charest took over. I was initially unimpressed, but slowly, that guy developed a great style of his own too.

    I rememeber in the wizard days this was always "worth" a little more than the issues around it and they always listed the reasoning as it was jim lee's first issue as the regular artist; it was like wizard couldn't admit that people paid more for this issue in the back issue bins because it was good. It didn't fit the 1st appearance/first issue narrative of the speculator market.

    Im not 100% sure, but i think Paul Smith might have been the first to do the jumpinging Wolverine or Captain America panel in uncanny x-men #167 page 12 i think. I know those guys were all riffing off one another back then, so maybe it was Miller first, but definately Romita Jr did it after Smith and thats where I assume Lee got it from.

    Jim Lee's work was the first piece of comic art I ever laid eyes on as kid. His run on Xmen is what set me on a path to become a comic artist.
    That being said, Hungry 90's Lee is completely different than DC era Lee. And I completely agree, he is the least interesting of his contemporaries.

    I'll just add as well progress here. Page 4 Cap is Steranko all the way. Wolvie DEF Art Adams. Page 11, Wolvie always willing to start a fracas with Nazi's. The silhouette's are a great story telling tool. I refer to the Copy of Dog Daze I sent you. We did it quite a few times and it worked well. At this point in time I had been buying X-Men since 1977. I was very excited to see Jim Lee on the book. I remember getting this one at 7-11 since the comic guy was there stocking the spinner rack when i was there. I ended up grabbing three copies since my brother read X-Men and my friend Brian also did. Seems like so long ago, and it was. Great episode and go check out Dog Daze for those silhouette shots I mentioned.

      I first knew about Lee’s work before Silvestri’s, but I can recall how amazed I was the first time I saw Silvestri’s art. I thought “this guy is just as good as Jim Lee!”, then years later as I followed both artists and as they evolved, I realized that Silvestri is actually better. Even Jim Lee said this in one of those Image comics history documentaries, that Marc’s the better artist even back when they were in Marvel; while Silvestri implied that he tried to be Jim Lee art-wise as he’s also a fan.

    The shadow drawing dark figures where you can only see their eyes and maybe whatever else was important to the panel drawing. Jim Lee did a good job of using it sparingly to tell the story. But then liefeld did it all the time because he's lazy and pretty much killed and buried that trope. The dude pretty much ruins everything he touches
