We recently played a gig to several hundred people in a super hot room and despite the sweat and occasional minor mistake, we had a blast and can’t wait to do it again. I've been performing for 60 years, primarily as a solo instrumentalist playing fingerstyle guitar. That being said, I am my own worst critic but something my wife said once, many years ago, when I was struggling with a difficult passage that I was determined to play the "correct" way struck home. She said "your audience has no idea that you may be taking a shortcut, they are amazed just by the fact that you play so well". From then on I decided to have fun and not nit pick myself to death. I haven't been in a band for years and have been playing at home in my studio composing and just having a blast. I've been playing to long to not berate myself for not being able to get something "perfect"; but now I shrug it off and say "just have fun with it". I'm doing the same thing at live performances. Life is too short...

I have always been too hard on myself on guitar, as I trained in competitive sport to a high level and transferred that mentality to music. Great advice! I've probably would be a lot better at 60 if I wasn't so self conscience as a kid taking " traditional" lessons of guitar and reading notes( which I really did not learn much) I picked the guitar back up at 15 and was ok with a few tips and watching and not so inhibited but still not brave enough to play along with a very good friends band that did the bar and huge party, county fair circuit thing.Looking back too, that guitar teacher should if noticed my "Stella" guitars strings were an 1" off the fretboard!!! It was more torture than fun🤪Thanks for the inspiring message, I'm at a point where I'm enjoying every minute of play time and enough guitars( for today) to satisfy my wants from over the years.😁
I play by myself for myself. I have no care to play for others. When I was a teenager…I wanted to be a rockstar. When I was in high school played in a band that did metal covers to classic rock covers, and we rented out our local community center on Saturdays. By senior year, I no longer wanted to be a rockstar. We actually used to pack out the place. Made decent money for our age, it was just a lot of work. It was exhausting and made me kind of hate playing. I quit the band and got married. Guitar is my Xanax. It’s for me. Playing live is just not my thing, but playing alone, continuously learning new things, nobody (but my wife) judging me. That’s what I love. After hours of practicing something I couldn’t play until I finally get it. It’s personally rewarding.
I'd say I've been in this realm of playing purely for me. I actually have a video on my channel about anxiety and the guitar connection as it effects me anyways.
I sang for a couple of hard-rock bands from 2000 to 2016. Sold albums in about 12 countries. Shared the stage with AMAZING people I looked up to... and I still never mattered or made much money. In the process, you know what I discovered? EVERYONE messes up. Be tough on yourself BEFORE the show... but not AT the show. Enjoy the ride. Enjoy the crowd. Make real friends with fans. STOP HATING YOURSELF. Do your best.... but remember to be a fan of your own music or whatever you're covering, and be nice to people. People care a lot more about how you treated them than if you got every note right. Oh, and ALWAYS laugh at yourself. Not for them... for YOU.
Oh hell yeah man... I stayed stuck for 17 years.. No shit.. 17 years... Tripping over my own ego. When I stopped giving a shit and just played the thing... I started getting better.
Have to say guys, bravo... After playing covers for 25 years, I forayed into original music. What an eye opener to hear recorded, what I thought was great, to be soulless. Everything I'd learned was someone else's ideas, not my own. It took another 2 years of writing and recording to "forget" what I had learned, and go on "instinct". Amazingly, what was inside me, was not styles that I had covered, but rather, a distillation of those styles into my own interpretations. I started free improvising regularly, and started discovering my own path. It was liberating... yes, we make mistakes, they are fleeting, but there's always passion and soul. Play Every Day
Only Baxter could use a guitar based channel to refer to an adult film star, The Boys From Brazil, and Aimee Mann in the span of 15 minutes. Rock on guys 🎸
I have and always will say, if something makes you smile that’s all that matters. There is to much hate in the world without finding the need make a negative comment about someone playing guitar. The beautiful thing about the guitar is that it’s an instrument that everyone can get away with playing badly.
Like Little Richard said to me in the '70s, Tell them "I'm fantastic!" and when they say "You're conceited!" You tell them, "Honey, I'm not conceited, I'm convinced!"
Mean and judge-y comment : you guys have an awesome shop, you provide helpful information to the community (like announcements of price hikes with weeks to prepare in some cases, or honesty about brands, not overselling guitars for a few extra bucks and instead try to fit the guitar to the player, and whatnot), and make fun and hilarious videos for everyone to enjoy! … shoot, that makes you guys sound awesome like you are. How about; you guys are having too much fun, and spreading positivity into a sometimes overly judgmental community? I concede.. you guys are some of the most important people in the YT guitar community. You guys even make the honest “negative” aspects of guitars seem a little more realistic. I’m still a newer fan and have been going all through the catalog. I hope you guys have a video on tone woods and the changes over the last ten ish years?.. the last time I bought a nice mid range, or even my Rick (maybe 10 years ago now) poplar was considered the “worst” tone wood. It was almost a dirty word so they were really pushing “basswood”… now it’s just in so many amazing guitars that approach or surpass 1000 bucks.. any insight you awesome dudes have as to this tectonic shit in the industry? Is it just wood rarity/price, harvesting restrictions of these woods, or just the equivalent in the guitar world of “shrinkflation”? Cheers! And keep up the noise reviews!
You guys are entertaining because you’re true to the improv process: “yes, and…” we love it out here. By the way, I think the person who was traumatized by Interview with the Vampire was Kirsten Dunst.
Hey guys just wanted to say Happy Monday I just subscribe to Jonathan's Channel what a blasted is to watch him play guitar he's damn good too I enjoy every minute of you too thanks for sharing
Good way to start a Monday! Thanks, y'all 🙏 Almost 40 years of playing guitar, and I'm still a hack. But I'm okay with that, I enjoy what I play. In a band situation, I prefer bass. A work in progress, I try to pick up something new each day and work on it, add it to the fold if knowledge. Be good to you
I grew up in the shred era of the late 80’s. I’m a short person with short fingers. I don’t have the reach for that. I pick the sweet notes and make sure I’m saying something. Technique is a tool. And it’s important. But it’s a tool to help you communicate something. The communication is the important thing
You guys are absolutely right. I find I play my best when I stop caring about impressing people or worrying about what they think. Many years ago I had a friend I was jamming with and he wanted me to improvise a solo while he played a rhythm part. He was recording it so I wanted to really do a good job. I kept making mistakes, my timing was off all because I wanted to impress him. Finally he shut off the tape machine and we just played some other songs. About 1/2 an hour later he wanted to try the original song again. In my mind the tape machine was off. We went through the song and I played possibly the best I ever had. Afterwards he said he had something he wanted me to listen to. He played the tape and I was blown away. I asked him who played that assuming he had done the song with someone else. When he told me that is was me playing I couldn’t believe it. All because I just had fun and wasn’t worried about what it sounded like. I learned a valuable lesson that day.
I honestly love blade so much. I can't remember if I watched all of em but I know I enjoyed every second of it. Also I'm getting my first electric guitar shipped this Wednesday:)
I discovered this a good dozen years or so (maybe 20) - like Jonathon says once you get used to playing Live - who gives a rip..... Baxter sums it up at the 2 min mark.... have fun with it. the average person has NO IDEA if you make a mistake.....
100% agree. I got into a bad rut of chasing gear, watching youtube guitar heroes, and chasing online lessons to "fix" my playing. The best thing I did was take a break for 2 weeks. I didn't do ANYTHING guitar related. Then I came back to the guitar and felt like I played better than I every have. I was much more relaxed, and actually enjoyed playing again. :)
No one wants to hear play like someone else. We can just download who you’re trying to copy. Be yourself and do you. It’s the only chance you got of getting other people to care about you do.
I watched a lot of that as a little baby goth. I'd be watching Forever Knight, eating my Count Chocula and practicing Robert Smith riffs during the commercial breaks.
I love the RHCP but I don’t mimic John. I have my own style. I call it “Southern Blues Punk” and it fills my soul with happiness. I learned a while back that I don’t need to be vindicated by anyone else for a single thing. 99.9% of these people judging me haven’t accomplished a touch of what I’ve accomplished. They can go sip on their haterade. 😊
I mean, in general, I love being older and I'm happier than I ever have been. My 40's have given me more happiness than my 20's ever did. Playing for myself has given me more happiness than playing in bands I thought might go somewhere.
i say this is like junk tv but for guitar nerds but today they have a serious point. one that I hope to actually hear. so the question now is "what would you do if you weren't scared to fail?"...thx friends.

Not for them... for YOU.
Casino is my fave YT channel. Bored with dull gear reviews! Loving your work! Toodle pip from Camden, London.
Oh hell yeah man... I stayed stuck for 17 years.. No shit.. 17 years... Tripping over my own ego. When I stopped giving a shit and just played the thing... I started getting better.
Yes! Casino Guitars on a Monday morning!
⚓️ Thanks Casino 😎
Damn you, Casino! Get out of my subconscious!
You guys are the best.
Sweet Eliminator Tee!
I have and always will say, if something makes you smile that’s all that matters. There is to much hate in the world without finding the need make a negative comment about someone playing guitar. The beautiful thing about the guitar is that it’s an instrument that everyone can get away with playing badly.
You guys are the best
Like Little Richard said to me in the '70s, Tell them "I'm fantastic!" and when they say "You're conceited!" You tell them, "Honey, I'm not conceited, I'm convinced!"
You like the Blues, I like you guys more! 🎸🎸
Always Hands and Heart...Without both of those, just another Great playea
Angel is the vampire show...haha
Leonard Cohen and Crowbar are each equally influential to me. Relish in your oddity. ⚜️🔆
I loved "True Blood"!
Hey guys just wanted to say Happy Monday I just subscribe to Jonathan's Channel what a blasted is to watch him play guitar he's damn good too I enjoy every minute of you too thanks for sharing
Forever Knight was the vampire show I believe you were talking about.
I've notice Scofield has really been cutting loose lately, wait he always did that's why he's so cool!
Good way to start a Monday!
Thanks, y'all 🙏
Almost 40 years of playing guitar, and I'm still a hack.
Rich Williams, Kerry Livgren. Both play for Kansas and complimentary to the max but such different styles.
What a great story and thanks for sharing
the internet is a mean and judgey place
Elon Musk-I'll be your Huckleberry
I honestly love blade so much. I can't remember if I watched all of em but I know I enjoyed every second of it. Also I'm getting my first electric guitar shipped this Wednesday:)
Dark Shadows. The TV series with the vampire hero. I think that's what you were referring to.
Not sure if I come for the movie banter of guitar stuff 😆 probably both.
Now I have to go watch some vampire movies 😂
I can't believe I've only subscribed with 42.5k of my profiles to your channel. I swear I'd done it 150k times.
"The Boys from Brazil" - not Hitler's brain, but the events of his life with a bunch of cloned blue-eyed kids. Great flick!
Play Guitar and Have Fun!
So, I think we need Predator vs Aliens and Twilight vampires and werewolves
No one wants to hear play like someone else. We can just download who you’re trying to copy. Be yourself and do you. It’s the only chance you got of getting other people to care about you do.
Jonathan, the show was called Forever Knight, but the pilot was called Nick Knight and starred Rick Springfield.
I watched a lot of that as a little baby goth. I'd be watching Forever Knight, eating my Count Chocula and practicing Robert Smith riffs during the commercial breaks.
"It's important in life if you don't give a shit. It can help you a lot" - George Carlin
I think the movie you're thinking of is, "The Boys From Brazil."
Got to do it because you like to.
My stepmom used to work with Aimee Mann at the original Newberry Comics while she was in Til Tuesday.
The Boys from Brazil. Gregory Peck and Laurence Olivier, circa 1977 or 1978 I think.
Forever Knight
Black an white movie 🍿 🎥???..dr .strangelove maybe 🤔 it’s pretty weird?..🧐good cast,Kubrick!
Maltese Falcon is a good one too
@@davedavid7061 it’s a classic🤘
@@jeremiahallender1919 I think the Peter Lorre character was the inspiration for Ren Of Ren and Stimpy
Cruise made it on to Pitt's never list. Tells us something.
My playing is atrocious, I would not subject anyone’s ears to that kind of torture HOWEVER, I still LOVE playing!!!
"forever knight" was the vimpire cop tv show.
Everyone gets to have a Salieri moment, where you realize your talent is sufficient only to recognize real talent, and it hurts but learn and move on.
Never had that problem lol
I think the show Jonathan was thinking about is Forever Night
Not that it matters, but you two are just fun to watch...
i say this is like junk tv but for guitar nerds but today they have a serious point. one that I hope to actually hear. so the question now is "what would you do if you weren't scared to fail?"...thx friends.
