Spring of 1969, after the Tigers win the World Series, I went to a concert at a rival High School in Springfield Ohio, to see Denny McLain play. I was star stuck. First kid in the door. Front row, front and center. I was a Tigers fan. Listened to them on the skip AM radio at night that summer. He and I had our moment. They did a "stump the band" gig. He called on me, and I blurted out "Heard it through the Grapevine" as my song to stump the band. Probably the most popular song of that time. McLain tied the microphone cord around my neck....."Kid, you are killing me, and now I'm going to kill you!". Everybody laughed. At my expense. Something you couldn't do today. It was memorable. And yes, he gave me an autographed baseball. Something I gave to a friend long ago. But the memory? That's mine.
Que gran historia de vida. Gracias por compartir.
When I played whiffle ball as a kid, I WAS DENNY MCLAIN!!!
A novelty album.. Took 2 days to record.. Sold pretty good actually .. Met him when i was working at a 7/11 (out on parole)
I love this. My favorite baseball pitcher ever! And he had musical talent!
Beautiful and relaxing
I have this album it is great
This album is oddly enjoyable. It's like a jazz album played at the ballpark 😁
Dandy! Grandma had this record. Just saw a streaming channel on TuneIn "SomaFM: Illinois St Lounge" played a song from this album last night!
I would have loved to meet Denny McLain. Great pitcher!
He's still alive and you can do a Zoom call with him until covid restrictions is over.
saw him at eastland center in i think 1969 at harper woods mich he was bragging about this large coat he had on
Yes indeed, 1968!
Delightfully kitchy...
The man had talents
I have the album, but never put a needle to it. Thanks.
This sounds like Austin Powers at a baseball game. Good stuff.
Great pitcher and great musician! Wonder what's harder--playing organ like that or winning 30 games in a season?
sounds like a hammond b-3, can anyone confirm this?
Lol impossible to listen to this without being immediately reminded of his downfall
Great record from a rather mediocre organist. The ensemble around him salvages this record.
