Benn riding since 74 but took 18 years off to run my new business, (porting 2-stroke engines). I could afford to buy a bike easier starting in 76 when I was 12, 14,16 (all bought making $1.00/her part time), and in 84, (used 1982 YZ250), all for under $850,---before the 1986 production rule that tripled the cost of a bike in 5 years.
How did I buy a more affordable bike in 2020? I bought a slightly used 2019 YZ250 for $6,500. Like almost one million kids/year today who could never afford their own bike, (now), including Marty Smith, Marty Tripes, Bob Hannah, Mike Bell, Roger DeCoster---and probably 90% of the stars we grew up with, I never would have been able to get into this sport if I were a kid today. Now I love it when people can make money to afford a 14 grand bike that you don't know how to work on, (and even use a ape hanger freestyle bar set up for riding),,---but you are the last ones. This sport can't survive with the direction it (and the world) has been going (communism). It is not like Polo that rich people participate in and watch, because you don't need factories to make a horse. The government already taken over the industry with the 4-stroke, (why the price is so high), riding area are made illegal to ride on,---and it is just a matter of time, probably after the economic collapse that they are trying to make as bad as possible, the government will deem dirt bikes as "non-essential". We already accepted that phrase for government shutting down our private businesses. Welcome to commuism kids.

My shop cuts the tax off for me...that helps alot. My brother is a dirtbike and quad mechanic so he's able to order parts for a decent price. Doesn't hurt to order bearings, tires and whatever else you find on sale or in advance of any rise due to inflation.
Other than that...find some nice flowy trails and practice as much as you can away from the track. Free riding is just as good.

@@Blu3_SK33 Over 200 hours on my engine with minimal maintenance. Still going strong. Compared to mixing oil and top ends in a 2 stroke you really aren't saving any money. 2 stroke engine grenades you are looking at comparable costs especially if machining is needed. Besides this isn't a 4 stroke vs 2 stroke debate...I commented to show that doesn't matter what you ride your at a disadvantage regardless. But keep that pissy 2 stroke rider mentality going from the behind your keyboard 👍

This is great, I definitely prefer buying local, but beware...... I went thru this when moving to a new area once, the biggest dealer offered me 20% off retail, after my first order I thought the prices seemed high, checked their pricing against actual MSRP and they had all their parts marked up 35%, so I was basically paying 15% over retail........ I let them know my thoughts and went back to Honda East who gave me a legit 20% off.
To help yourself, make a parts list of the most likely items you'll need, check prices at places like Partzilla and other online discount houses and then go to the dealer with this info and see if they beat or at a minimum match their prices.

Fact? You tell me guys. A kid is not getting into this sport unless their parents rode, and make a pretty healthy 6 figure income. If that was the circumstance in 1968 when Edison Dye brought the first Husky's to the USA which kicked off the sport in the USA,---the sport never would have started in the USA. The kids who bought them making $1.00'hr like me, (some who became most of the MX stars of the 70's and 80's), would never have turned into the parents who still can afford a 14 grand bike for their kid. This is why the market share today is about 1/10th of what it was, (and land closures), and it is also why ever track and trail we made in the 80's are grown in in Michigan, that has not produced a factory rider since Kelly Smith, who's Dad is a friend of mine, and did not come from money either.
