"Don't Look Back" stands as the greatest arena rock anthem of all-time.... Dare I say above anything Queen ever did and I am a massive Queen fan. Every single note and fancy lick is pure musical genius. I love blasting this song whenever I'm speeding up I-70 West out of Denver, as my engine roars and my car climbs up the beautiful sunlit Rocky Mountains. It's as if the epic lead guitars are calling across the valleys to me. And the clean tones seem to personify the sunshine as it peers through the forests.... I would not be playing guitar today if it wasn't for the legendary tone and compositions of Tom Scholz taking me away to other worlds. Finally as a young teenager, I had found that epic song I had always wanted to hear from a musical act. Changed my life....
I like it too, but maybe not THAT much. :) I think as far as popularity, Queen's "We Will Rock You" is probably more famous and more used at different public functions but I am, like you, a Queen fan, too. But yeah, the opening buzz saw sound and the idea of moving forward and Brad Delp's vocals... was a great tune. Scholz probably took a month just to mix that one song and how he managed to do it that well w/o automation is pretty amazing. I'd like to hear an interview of him actually talking about the recording and mixing process for those first 2 albums.
No Brian May? His tone was also pretty unique, I'd say. Neal's wasn't that unique. I prob wouldn't put him in my list of unique guitar tones but he was (is) a really good player. Nugent had a great tone too, imo. so many!
I am back watching truth's older stuff again, cos I likes me some Boston. Celebration day today in the U.K. As we come out of the harsher parts of lockdown. Stay safe every one, from Steve and my new band with Al and Arthur.......that's Al Zimers and Arthur Itis.
Man I'm 59 years old, I love play guitar i love Boston, You are amazing. Watching your videos I have learned and corrected many mistakes I made playing Boston songs. ALL MY RESPECT, ADMIRATION AND GRATITUDE.
No f.... ing way! I love this guy! This song is one of my favorites, I hear this song many times, but watch this guy playing the guitar, blow my mind! Rock on!
I have been playing Metal and Rock on guitar for over 27 years and I don't even come close to your perfection.... damn good my friend!!!.....\\m//........
ohhhhhh I forgot to mention I saw a guitar at my local store that looks like yours, its a used Fender in excellent condition for $1.300 dollars...it looks like the one you are playing here...my favorites are Jackson. but I really love all guitars...its the greatest musical instrument to me.........anyway, Rock on my friend!.......\\m// \\m//
DEICIDE - I remember when I was 5 yrs old, sitting on the stairs just outside my parents bedroom door with my ear pressed against the wall, listening to my Dad playing his guitar. If he’d known I was there, he might’ve scolded me; he was terrible self conscious about his playing. I was fascinated with that guitar. That something so inanimate, in someone’s hand, could make such sounds that made my whole body vibrate; starting in my head and chest and spreading out in such amazing colors and shapes throughout the rest of me.......I just couldn’t get enough of it. Here I am, 60 years later, STILL so addicted to the sounds of a guitar. Almost any guitar!
thanks! Yes, after I played it, I went back in and did more tweaking and vol changes and more delay here some verb here and added a chorus thingy on the middle soft part and so I think it turned out really well.
I used to listen to this song with those big radio shack headphones and an 8-track. I closed my eyes and listened to you play this song. Except for a few notes, you played it perfectly. I don't say that to be pedantic, but rather, to convey that I've heard this song so many times in aural isolation that I know it note by note. You are an exceptional musician. Steve Perry? You're brave!
Not a special one. I run from guitar to guitar cord to Focusrite ISA One preamp (instrument input obviously) from that to my sound card input (just a line signal over an rca cable but digital would be better like SPDIF but I don't have an extra grand to buy the AD/DA card for the preamp). Then you open Reaper, assign any guitar plugin like GR5 and arm the track to record. Set levels everywhere you can to get optimal signal. Play. that's about it.
Dude you're awesome, I've been drumming 47 years, I love your guitar work, I saw Boston when I was in the air force in fort worth, thanks for being a great guitar player
well, I tried! But I had to learn a lot of it again because I really forgot some of it and never really learned it exactly. So I played it a bit one day and some the next and then recorded it and flubbed it prob twice then kept the 3rd take and then I touched up a couple of minor note flubs after the fact where I didn't quite hit it cleanly. Only 1 of them I can spot and then there's the spot where I totally forgot what to play. hehe thank ya
As someone who DOES play guitar (but has never been to a Boston concert), I can say that David Cross knows of what he speaks with regard to your playing prowess. You definitely got the feel and sound for this tune. This is the best take on the song I've heard from a non-Boston musician, and you aren't even using a Rockman. (I keep daydreaming that I could use one of my Line 6 PODs to re-create the sound, though their version of Randy Rhodes' sound on "Crazy Train" gets really close.) Ooh, dig the additional harmony at 4:48! Had to go back and hear it over again!
No, I set up the switches by using envelopes in Reaper. I create them BEFORE I record so it's all set. I don't have to do anything but play except on that clean part you notice I have to switch my bridge from series to single coil to get that tiny thin sound. So all my volumes, delays, amp switching is already set and I can just worry about playing.
They are my number one band, when there frost album came out. I had been in a bad wreck, that had me stuck in bone for a good while. At 17 I would set in my room and listen to it ( the album) over and over, I about wore the groves out. But I have a good time watching and listening to you. Keep it live. Rick H
Huff is a great guitarist! I like that see you in my dreams tune. The vocals (him again) are really good too. I was thinking about doing that Kansas tune (their big hit). Maybe I could learn a Giant tune.
Yes, I hear it pretty much as it is in this vid while I'm playing it. My PC is fairly new and it can do amp sim plus several effects and still give me a really fast response time. I hit a string and it's probably 3 ms of delay. maybe 2 ms.
Man, I have forgotten how good of a ROCK song this is. Excellent. Im late to the party here. I also didn't see the early Boston live except at the 1979 Day on the Green. Of course, I didn't get much from a stadium show here in the Bay Area, with the time, drugs and alcohol of the day. But have seen many shows after the 3rd album going forward. Nice work on these, Im also enjoying the Foreplay/Long time vid. Keep up the good work.
Truth!!! You are a true MASTER of the axe! As I sit and watch/analyze your works, you never seize to leave me in aww! Your skills of guitar magic, vocals and over voice capabilities for anyone to witness leaves them practically speechless. You are truly an artist we all emulate! Thank you for displaying your talents for the world to see!
Very nice work TruthSurge! I recently went to a Boston Concert and decided I would like to learn one of their songs on guitar and this is the one I decided on. It is probably the only time I will ever dial in this sound just for this song. I learned a few licks back in mid 90's off of a few of their hits but never learned any whole songs of Boston.
Wow! Until now I had mostly heard your excellent voice. You can play amazingly well also. A truly talented person. You are amazing. I hope you teach so you can share your skills with others.
I Love This Song. Listening to this song reminds me of my youth. You are always playing perfectly. 🎸 Thank you for your wonderful performance. From Japan. 🇯🇵
My favorite Boston song of them ALL! Well done! Even after 40+ years of guitar playing myself, I can't help but be awed and impressed! Wonderful job!! You're inspiring to this old stroke survivor who still stumbles around the frets! ;-)
Your a bad ass old man!! Not sure what the thumbs down are. I do know we didn’t have the internet and opportunities to learn with that they do. Have some son in laws that love music I don’t understand. Bands now days are a dime a dozen and they’ve all gone speed and have no feel. Of course there are exceptions., but I started with the same music you play, made my rounds through the likes of Dream Theater just to come back to my favorites and classics. Pretty much everything you play. If you would I’ve gotten into Jake E Lee’s Red Dragon Cartel, and Vivian Campbell’s Last in Line. Would love to here you play one. Enjoy watching you. Down to earth damn decent guy with obvious talent getting out there and doing what he loves.
In Reaper, along with the actual song, I put envelopes in for the effects like how much distortion so I can go clean to dirty and also I put envelopes for the volume so I can back off a tad for the verses and a little louder for solo and all this happens LIVE as I play because the envelopes are in before I record. :)
TruthSurge For Boston in general and specifically Don’t Look Back. I wish I knew how you get the tone so close if not dead on..or better...did you say you use Vox ac30...what effect gear? What guitar are you using? I don’t even know what you mean by envelopes...not sure why Reaper is mentioned. In short how about a video about your gear and effects and everything that you do to get your sound...😀
@@jimgodofbiscuits pretty sure it's Guitar Rig 4 or 5 (maybe 4) with some marshall head and cabinet and I lost my best Boston tone somehow. It was the one for long time. But I just get in there and use my ears and fiddle till I'm close. thx!!
I tried hard to get a really close sound and I also didn't push my volume up too much in the mix so it's a blend of the album and me. But maybe I should have pushed mine louder so haters could tell I'm really playing but look at my fingers. you can't fake that.
Damn Truth!!!! The more I watch you, the more I realize that you are one humble son of a gun. You are a awesome guitarist. If I had your talent, I would be showing it off! Lol!!

i am a 61 year old rock bassist and i play boston songs all the time. i just jammed along with you on my bass!! you are an awesome guitarist!!
thanks! yeah, it's one of me old favorites. One of those when you heard it the first time (or me at least) i said THAT'S what I want my guitar to do!
That's right I'm somewhere about 80 90 miles behind you but I'm gaining up quick 😆 😎
Nothing soothes the soul like that final powerful A chord. I could listen to that forever.
true. It's so in tune.
