  • Thanks to "Irving-NorCal" and his vidoe.... "2017 GMC Duramax Low Coolant Warning Bad Sensor Reservoir Replacement", I came up with my own contraption to add fluid to the lower coolant reservoir.
I did take a drill bit and made the hole in the upper coolant tank over/flow hole slightly larger.. and I mean slightly.. that way the connector fit snuggly in the hole.. not loose.
Hope this helps save you some BIG BUCKS by doing it yourself!!!

If you read the owners manual, the diesel supplement, it states that during normal operation the lower tank should be mostly empty (depending on operating conditions).

I appreciate the post, thank you. I started here. FYI My 2018 duramax manual had instructions on how to add antifreeze without tools / fixtures. Hardest part was waiting for the engine to hit 195 degree F.

On my GMC 2018 3500 Duramax (about 46,000 miles) noticed this "Coolant Level Low; Add Coolant" message. Saw my lower tank was empty, but the top tank was full. Removed the cap from the lower tank and it unscrewed the normal way, not backwards like the top tank cap does. Maybe in 2018 they changed it I don't know. I then felt a small hole at the top of the lower tank cap location. I then filled the top overfull with coolant into a funnel slowly and the coolant just fills up to that small overflow hole and then flows down to the bottom tank by gravity. It took about 1/2 gallon then stopped taking any more. Then I just siphoned out the extra from the top tank back into the DexCool container on the floor level to get the top tank level down to the two upward pointing arrows. Should not need any tubes or special fittings. Pretty simple procedure, not sure why the system doesn't do this on its own. Good luck everyone.

I followed this procedure, from the TSB. Worked well. Unfortunately I still get the warning message every drive. I guess I need a new tank since you can't just replace the sensor.

What is the purpose of taking the lower tank cap off? Does that create some kind of vacuum needed?

Thank you sir! This was exactly what I needed. I used a smaller bottle so it took a few more loads but it worked like a charm.
Thanks for sharing it with us!

Turkey baster worked like a champ, took a little time but works just as well.

Thanks. This information in this video is very helpful. The dealership just did the block heater on my truck and I don't believe they did the proper fill procedure. I could take it back but to be honest I don't trust them. This information will allow me to do it and know it's correct.

Thanks you sir. I did a similar thing using a large syringe and some tubing. It took a little longer to put in about a half gallon of antifreeze until it overflowed. I have yet to drive it to see if it worked. My only concern is one of the comments that the lower take is supposed to be empty. Brings out the McGyver in us, eh?

The coolant sensor is in the middle and points up where the float is in the top tank, there should not be coolant in the lower overflow tank.

did it work? I was under the impression the sensor penetrates into the upper tank. best solution i found is disconnect the sensor and install a jumper in the plug. just manually check the water when you add def...

Exactly, I have never had any vehicle tell me when the coolant was low. I have a temperature gauge and if an engine starts getting hot you will smell it right away.

The bigger Question is why did you have to add Antifreeze to begin with, there is a underlying issue somewhere in the system. I have to add a Gallon once every six months. 160,000 on a 2014 LML. I believe it is leaking into a cylinder from a Bad Head Gasket.

I had a Chevy van that used a small amount of antifreeze from day one when I bought it new. I added about a coffee cup of fluid every month or so for years. I read somewhere that Chevy puts Stop Leak in some of their vehicles when they are new so I thought what could it hurt. I added Stop Leak according to their instructions and have not had any more leaks since.

I did the same , bought a wiper house adapter, open it a lil bit more and add like half galon, i took my 2018 for a ride and still showing the low coolant message when temperature reached half way at the gage.

Do you have to take the bottom cap off the tank to fill it up. Just fill it with the bottom cap off ?

    • @udavidism
      @udavidism Год назад

It doesn't want to go in unless you remove that lower cap.

@@hawkskyflier I keep peanut butter jars, some bottles and egg cartons. Several people I know have chickens. It's funny, give a farmer egg cartons you would have thrown away and they will give you eggs, without asking.
