This is more advanced than pretty much anything you’ll see in most “advanced drumming” courses. The coordination and independence required to cleanly pull this off at this speed is seriously next level. Good drummers with few years under their belt should be able to do two of these patterns simultaneously without too much trouble. Very experienced drummers should be able to handle three of them with some practice. But stringing all four together with this level of speed and precision is just incredible.

Each of your limbs does have its own brain. It just takes thousands of hours of practice to teach those brains to do things without the need for your main brain to tell them to. People never realise our brain isn’t only in our heads. We have a distributed nervous system, with smaller and smaller brains all the way down to our appendages. Which is why you’re not thinking of all the minute steps when walking to a cup and picking it up, without spilling water. Your hand does most of the picking up for itself, while your arm is stabilising the whole exercise and your legs are keeping you upright. If all that came from your brain, you’d fall down in a puddle of water 😂

This is actually *not* using big brain capacity. The training is needed to get the brain to *not* need to explicitly focus on the task - explicit focus leads to brain overload.
This is the same as how you are not explicitly focusing on how to balance when you walk, even if that is a ridiculously complex problem that challenges computer programmers when making walking robots.

dude i'm obsessed with this. my buddy and i have made a ton of rap songs in weird time signatures and our appetite for further insanity is insatiable. the song we did most recently was actually with a metal drummer and it's in alternating measures of 7/4, 6/4, 7/4, and 5/4. what's extra weird about it is that it actually starts to sound incredibly normal after a while even when it's very starkly broken up into those particular 7/6/7/5 segments. it's bizarre. POINT IS i reeeeeaaaally wanna use this rhythm in a beat, that'd be so fun man

@@dismotherefer so the one we just did is still in the tentative titling stages; it was initially just "7675" but now we're thinking "7675 TRIO X" which was just another temporary title that we're thinking of using. it's already recorded though, we're just all in different states so it's a little complicated hahahaha. i'm in oregon, JD's in indiana, and Tito is in Texas (Tito Felix from Upon a Burning Body).
that being said if you wanna hear some wild time signature mania from us our entire last album (Badd Timing by The Sooper Swag Project) is in not-4/4 for every single track except the intro! There's even a whole BBC podcast about it if you wanna check that out!

Yeah I hear that. One of bands writes in clusters of odd times, but since we are always focused on the groove and music (which is equally as important so it translates) we forget or don't consider what songs are written in because it's just been felt. We played a song for years and only after sitting and counting realised it was in 10 not 7 as I thought. Was just feeling it for all that time

It’s funny you mentioned that. My best friend just bought me a Roland TD-1 earlier this year. We practice at his house, and my set of drums are there. We live about 1.5 hrs away from one another, so I have no way to play drums during the week, just on practice days (which are fewer and fewer recently).
He noticed my struggle and bought me and electronic kit so I can practice in my apartment any time I want. I’ve never had an e-kit, this is my first. There were plenty of cheaper models for retail, but he knew thru me that Roland seems to be the best. No second thoughts, he saw the TD-1 and the price and bought it that same day. I’m still kinda mind blown about it, every time I sit down to play I think of him.
