  • There's a lot that I didn't cover in this, like the really cool Amiibo support. Also sorry for the inconsistent lighting. This is my first review type video so I'm just getting used to it as well as uploading weekly. That's why there's kind of mixed messages across the video, I really like this game and don't have that much bad to say about it, but I thought I'd point out the few gripes that I had. Thanks for watching!
And thanks to ZackScottGames and Zephiel810 for uploading gameplay

it's cool seeing someone talk about this game in 2022, it always baffles me that the pikmin series decided to go this direction just completely outta the blue. real talk tho I'm shocked you only have 6 subscribers with quality content like this. 7 now if you are including me.

well, it is nintendo and since day 0 they've done all kinds of genres with the same characters thrown in just for cross promotion. remember yoshis cookie, dr mario, and not only puzzlers but all the rest including the sports-themed mario titles. even donkey kong country was a very different take on the Donkey Kong character. almost every property has gotten a half dozen bizarre genre title.

yeah, just finished the game to 100% all the pikmin games before four comes out a month or so from now, DO NOT 100% THIS GAME IT IS NOT A GOOD ONE TO DO THAT WITH, the game is really tedious, boring, and really unforgiving with those crumbug hitboxes. Its overall simple with barely anything interesting enough to play through a level multiple times and the difficulty remaining relatively the same up until the 8th world where the difficulty sky rockets with an instakill, that paired with the tediously long levels is just not fun. I love the pikmin series and everything it has but geez this game was not fun to be a completionist on.

This is my first Pikmin game. I love it. Maybe it's different from others but I think people just kind of gravitate towards what they're used to.
After watching this, I played it through one more time as a speed run with as little sparklium as possible to see what would happen. All that happens is after beating 8-e boss, the S.S. Dolphin II tells you that you need to collect more sparklium to go home, and should go back to the other areas to find some more.
My first play through, I reached the goal very early, like world 4. That's because I played every level several times to get perfect scores. I had kind of expected the game to have two separate endings, one ending for after you meet the goal, and one ending after you beat all the worlds. Either way, I'm glad I got to explore the whole thing.

It definitely isn't bad, but like a majority of developer Arzest's games, it's just sort of "middle of the road". There's really no spark to any of it. It just sort of...exists. Arzest's Yoshi's New Island was just about the same. It's just kind of "there".

  • @NintendanGX
    @NintendanGX Год назад +2

One of the biggest reasons for this game's ill fate is, simply put, bad timing. Hey! Pikmin was revealed in 2016, at a time when Nintendo were ruining long-running franchises left, right and center, and also putting the bare minimum effort into their spin-offs. Even the most open-minded and stout followers of Nintendo were losing faith in their ability to deliver a quality product.
Chi-bi Robo Ziplash had none of what made the original game good, or fun, or unique, and yet Kensuke Tanabe stated in no uncertain terms that the Chi-bi Robo franchise's future hinged on this boring, clunky 2D platformer. In other words, "Please buy the game you don't want, for the vague hope we'll make the game you DO want, even though we're more likely to make another uninteresting game, slap Chi-bi Robo's face onto it and tell you to buy that one again." Yup, Tanabe was literally negotiating the fate of a franchise like a gaming terrorist.
Then you've got Paper Mario: Colour Splash, releasing in 2016, which completely ignored people's problems with Sticker Star and outright refused to include the features that made the first three games great. Tanabe was involved in that one too.
The long-awaited crossover between Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem turned out to be a design-by-committee, clean, bland-looking idol game, nigh indistinguishable from every other JRPG on the market, and worse yet, Nintendo was keen on censoring the hell out of it. Needless to say, fans of both franchise didn't get what they were hoping for, and there was no official way to play it the way it was originally intended, even in the Switch version years later. Already a gut-punch for Fire Emblem fans after the disappointment of Fates, which forced people to pay three times to get the full experience, which had the worst story in a Fire Emblem game.
Let's also not forget Animal Crossing: Amiibo Festival, which not only dashed hopes of a brand new mainline game on the Wii U (though to be fair, it hadn't been that long after New Leaf), but failed to deliver a fun party-game in its own right.
And of course, despite how much fun I personally had with it, Starfox 0 fell so short of expectations, and ruined the entire experience with an awful control scheme and yet another re-treading of Starfox 1's story, that it put an iconic franchise on another indefinite hiatus.
So yeah, with all that context in mind, it's pretty understandable why nobody would give Hey! Pikmin the time of day. While I did end up coming round to Pikmin 3 and enjoying it a lot, I can't deny I was disappointed it didn't carry over features I enjoyed from Pikmin 2, like the expanded world, the Caves, treasure, the enemy and boss variety, and Bulbmin. We went almost 6 months without any decent Wii U exclusives since its launch, and it had a lot to prove, only to end so soon. It also doesn't help that Miyamoto kept teasing the fact that he was working on Pikmin 4, long before it was even ready to be revealed. You can imagine people's initial fear when Hey! Pikmin was revealed, and turned out to be a big departure from the rest of the franchise. I remember throwing my hands in the air and saying "Okay! I'm done." Even after Miyamoto clarified it wasn't the Pikmin 4 he kept referring to, it did very little to interest people.
It's like you said, the game could've been fantastic for what it was, and people still wouldn't buy it. Despite their hits and misses, I even like the developers of this game, Arzest (and by extension, Artoon). I still look back fondly on a lot of their games, like Super Princess Peach, Blinx: The Time Sweeper, Yoshi's Island DS, and even the Streetpass Mii Plaza. They've had their stinkers, like Balan Wonderworld, and the mediocre Yoshi's New Island, but they're also working on the upcoming Sonic Superstars, which has received nothing but positive feedback so far.
Now that we have Pikmin 4 on the horizon, and it's giving me everything I could want in a new Pikmin game so far (based on the demo), I feel a lot more inclined to give Hey! Pikmin a try. We're no longer in the dark ages of Nintendo, where games like Xenoblade X and Wonderful 101 were the exception, rather than the rule. And considering everyone who's played this game hasn't had much bad to say about it, I'm sure I'm in for a fun enough time.

Not disagreeing with anything you're saying, but I would like to add one thing:
Amiibo Festival failed in everything that fans *expected* from it. But the design itself wasn't horrible.
      1) It was the perfect "children's board game". Children who just wanted play a game despite them not knowing how to do anything more complicated than press and swipe (early smartphone generation kids). If you're happy with your children playing quietly for hours at a time, Amiibo Festival was absolutely perfect for them. Rounds would last an hour at average, shorter if kids are just tapping repeatedly, longer if they're actually reading, 3x as long if they added CPU opponents. The mechanics were also simple enough that if the children wanted to do more, could learn it fairly quickly.
      2) Island Survival was the perfect little minigame, and made people really want a more expanded game from it. Most people played it on New Leaf's update, but it came directly from this game. This minigame was so good, it got so much positive feedback, that it basically inspired the entire system for New Horizons (crafting focus).
      3) This game held so much mechanics/features that, if put into a full Animal Crossing game, a ton of people would definitely claim that it was the best Animal Crossing game - easily beating out New Horizons, and would be a powerful contender against New Leaf and Wild World. In fact, the way this game was designed, it looked very much like the Wii U Animal Crossing game was killed, dissected, and had most of its pieces put into this game instead (with its remaining pieces put into Happy Home Designer and Pocket Camp).
-Updated graphics that beats New Horizons' graphics
      -Neighbors with far more personality
-Neighbors that lived out their own lives that were reactive to events (participating in them directly, rather than passively)
      -Installations that affected town EVENTS
      -Installations that created NEW Events
-Key character/building events/scripts that puts a lot more highlight to their characters (Isabelle, Tom, etc)
      -Key characters wearing rotating outfits
-Different approaches to standard events (sicknesses & injuries, shop sales, etc)
      -etc
AKA the game hearkened back to Animal Crossing GC/N64(JP): Focusing far more on the neighbors, than just the player itself - making the world far more alive.
Amiibo Festival gets a lot of flack, spit, and vile... a meme for what counts as a "bad game".
But most of its critiques are unfounded, mostly due to people judging it without ever playing it or playing it only a handful of times.
Most of the *legitimate* hate against this game just comes from people's hate that it's a reminder of "what could have been". Which, while understandable, isn't quite fair either. A game should be judged as itself, rather than by comparison (yes, it's impossible NOT to compare anything, but people can lax their biases for the sake of fair judgement).

If there's one huge problem I noticed with the game is how it doesn't really know what it wants to be. It felt like the devs wanted soooo hard to try to make the game both like a Mario/Kirby styled fast-paced 2D platformer *and* a slow-paced time managing Pikmin game. And I felt the game kinda lost itself in the shuffel due to not wanting to commit to one.
