- 2009 (Tom Baxter wrote this song for veteran songstress, Dame Shirley Bassey, which she recorded and released on her 2009 CD. This clip is a live version performed on her Concert TV Special). Dame Shirley started show business as a chorus/dance girl back in 1953. Shortly thereafter when the managers/producers heard her sing she received a recording contract and gave up her dancing shows permanently. In 2013, Shirley is celebrating her Diamond Anniversary in show business (60 Years). And, as one can see, her powerful vocal abilities are still going strong. I hope that younger generation listeners will have a listen to this great 'VOICE' of the prior generation, and appreciate it.

What a powerful line delivered by a 70+ year old Diva who overcame tragedy
I remember as a 19 year old discovering Dame Shirley thanks to her awesome work with Propellerheads, and since then it's been nothing but priceless gems from this amazing woman. Diamonds are forever, and so is my admiration and love for this legend.

My favourite song from The Performance album. Tom Baxter has not only written a great song but written a song that is so Bassey-esque. The big harmony change is spine tingling and of course delivered with such power by Bassey. When an audience start cheering and clapping on a single note, you know something special is happening.
...I'd have given my eye-teeth to have been there. I'm in NYC...so lucky to have seen Shirley in concert in 80s/90s at Carnegie Hall...but THIS concert...excels.
I came across Dame Shirley bassey at the BBC proms, at the roundhouse by accident, and so glad did, it was mesmerising, I've listened it repeatedly, and can't stop playing this song, and shout to Mr Tom Baxter. I so wish I'd been there. I hope Dame Shirley will tour again. 🤞🤞🤞.
Hi Derek: Now into her 80's Dame Shirley most likely will not do world tours anymore. But, she still appears around the world at various events, and also appears on TV Shows. Even at 83 y.o. this Dame still has the pipes; they have aged like fine wine. And, I have uploaded well over 900 recordings and/or live performances going back to the late 1950's. Her voice has changed over the years, as when she first started she was actually classified as soprano. But, what has been consistently excellent all this time is her amazing vocal range, tone, high fidelity vibrato, and timber. From the beautiful 'My Special Dream', 'Fools Rush In', and 'Till' from the 60's to the beautiful 'Never Never Never' from the 1970's, to the exiting 'History Repeating' and 'World In Union' recorded 3+ decades later, she is simply THE VOICE! Here is another great song Bassey recorded in 2009 that she performed live. In her 70's and still outperforming every other singer in every category. She sings the stories of all of us who have struggled, fallen, gotten up nd persevered even when the odds were stacked against us. Not just a performer, singer, she empowers the world through her great work. Thank you DSB.

As great as Shirley Bassey is, no-one sings this song better than Tom himself. It's beautiful and clearly written from the heart and he sings every note with an achiing tenderness.

@janinecapaldi His version is really nice too, soft and sweet. What a gorgeous song, lyrically and musically. I read somewhere that he actually wrote this song for a voice like Shirley Bassey. He gave her this soft bittersweet song, and she really tells the story with her vocal ability. I am in such awe of Dame Shirley's voice at age 73 that I am in biased. I like hers best, but the tenderness s you described is nice too.
It's a beautiful song, I agree Tom sings it too slow...Bassey knocks it out of the ball park as only she can....sends shivers down your spine.

Wish I was at the concert, guess we all know why she is Dame Shirly Bassey, she's ok if you like talent. With the exception of Adel, they don't have singers like her around today. Judy Garland, Dame Shirley live performances were the best.

Funnily enough I've never been to any DSB concerts ! Definitely on the list of things to do...
...you MAY be too late. Shirley's now 80...reportedly doing "appearances" as in the SHIRLEY AT 80 show from December 2016 on BBC. I saw her 3x at Carnegie Hall and once at the Theater at Madison Square Garden in NYC. Shirley held the crowd...in her hand.
