I love how the older sister is clearly interested in him, flirting and eyeing him seductively, yet he ended up head over heels for her younger sister. I wonder how disappointed she was when he asked if he could call her sister instead.

At 18:09 she totally said 'varnish'. Richard knew what he was doing, he felt bad for her and maybe a combination he had a crush on her sister.
Slick dickie dawson they used to call him. He was a good man for helping out his future sister in law. He also knew someday he was going to ask out her sister, Gretchen.
If Dawson hadn't done that, she would have gotten goose eggs on 4 out of the 5 questions and only scoring 19 points on the fifth one. He totally bailed her out. If Gretchen had just answered Football instead of baseball, they would have gotten the 200 points they needed.

I always loved and appreciated Richard for being a loving soul. I die not know of hid love story with his wife Gretchen until today. What a True Love story.
I was part of the backstage crew during this era, and Gretchen always throated Rich really good and deep backstage -- Rich said Gretchen's gag reflex was basically nonexistent, and he said he decided to marry her the second she made his hog completely disappear down her gullet; she would do it regularly and the whole crew had to pretend like nothing was happening while we all could hear the loud, sloppy sounds of a sausage squelching around in her throat as he thrusted as deep as he could push it. He always kept a bib around the crotch area because she would ooze spit, and it would spill out of her mouth, drip over her chin, and then fall onto his pants. She always took it with ease and never complained. They were the cutest couple.
some fun facts. Bob Johnson died in 2011 a year before Richard Dawson. June Johnson died in 2018, 7 years after Richard. Gretchen Dawson is now 67, she stayed in the Beverly Hills home she shared with Richard for about 4 years after he died, and now lives in Manhattan Beach where she grew up. Richard was 25 years older than her when they started dating in 1981, they did not marry for ten years in 1991, they already had a daughter Shannon Nicole Dawson who was born in 1990. Gretchen has not remarried in the 11 since Richard passed. Gretchen and Heidi who is now 71, are both on Facebook but are not friends on Facebook. Wendy is 78 and lives in a condo in Redondo Beach.
Neat...I Just learned too that after they got together officially he vowed never to kiss another female contestant and held true to his word. I never knew that, but I was watching an interview where he describes their first date- he cooked her dinner, beef wellington, like a proper gentleman lol . Always liked him, and still watch him on TV, match game especially 😂. Of course I wish he were still here, but I was just talking about the fact that I'm glad he wasn't living in these times bc he would be widely misunderstood, ppl seem to forget what it meant to be a man back then, and a gentleman. The court of public opinion would destroy his character like they do so many. He really did genuinely root for people, and we like that about him too in our house ! Great guy, delightful spirit

I watched an interview with Richard before he died and he said he was seriously asking her if he could call her and he’d like to see her again. She had said she never expected him to call but she did give him her number. The rest is history❤️

Richard Dawson spent years on Match Game sitting next to one gorgeous actress after another on the set (Jo Ann Harris and Linda Day George immediately come to mind!) and yet he met the love of his life when she was a contestant on Family Feud, who was also very pretty btw....life is funny sometimes.
In regards to the Kissing thing everyone keeps freaking out about:
It all started when Richard Dawson had a nervous contestant on his show (who just so happened to be a woman). He gave her a kiss expressing that his mom used to do that to him whenever he was anxious/nervous/ etc. So, his only intentions of a kiss was to help the contestants, like the nervous woman, relax and breathe a little.
Ik it sounds weird, but it’s not like he did it out of their consent for long. The families, specifically the women, would be asked if they wanted to be kissed by Richard or not, and surprisingly, no one really cared about that and allowed him to do so. Of course Nowadays, we’d think it’s creepy, but back then it was just a little friendly gesture of his that almost everyone overlooked and allowed.
- Plus, after he got married to his second wife and they had a daughter together, he promised his daughter that he’d stop kissing other women and only kiss her mother (his wife.)

Kissing contestants was his thing as was holding hands in a reassuring manner, but interlaced fingers is a different thing altogether. 💕
Richard just dripped charm and wit. He was always clever with a joke without slowing down the flow of the show, and always wanted to see the contestants do well. There was an obvious, genuine kindness in his heart, and all you nimrods focus on is the fact that he would give girls a peck on the lips. Nope they sure wouldn't, and the network would certainly give him the ultimatum. Honestly, though, the growls were as disturbing to hear then as they are to hear again now in the archives. I mean, he always attached perfect innocence to his kissings, but the growls are another subject and I'm sure his mother didn't growl at him for good luck like she did with the kisses. I think that in today's world of virus/infection/germ-a-phobia, even Dawson wouldn't partake in any soft-tissue exchanges, not to mention the contestants.

Some of these comments by millennials, who were either too young or weren't yet born when Family Feud first aired, being shocked and appalled by Richard Dawson kissing female contestants are hilarious and over the top. Since they've been conditioned to believe (I won't use the word think) by their professors that this is predatory behavior, yet they cannot understand or explain why the female contestants didn't appear uncomfortable and why they kept coming on the show. Never mind the fact that contestants completed a questionnaire in advance that asked if female contestants minded if Dawson kissed them and I believe a follow up question was if they preferred the smooch to be on the lips or the cheek. Their wishes were always respected and the vast majority did not mind. I know millennials won't believe this, but overall American society really was a happy place back in the late 70s through the late 90s before all of the social justice PC police created all of this division that exists today.

Did anyone notice math errors at 5:35 and 6:20? They were off by one point. 37 + 7 = 44 is correct; but 44 + 5 = 49, and 49 + 36 = 85. They robbed the teams of a point. I think that is worth 5 dollars.
