Now I don't feel crazy! I've never been able to run/jog forward, but I could always run/jog backwards a considerable distance. I would speed walk a few blocks and then turn around and walk backwards a few.
I've never understood it until now but it always seemed to work different areas of my legs.

Been doing this on a treadmill (backwards walk) at 3.7 to 4.0 speed with a slight incline. 6-7 minutes backwards out of 45 minutes. I hold the rails firmly. Been doing this for 3 years, except during gym Covid closures. Slightly helps knee pain, better for posture. Real knee improvement has come from swimming and stationary bike. Zero weight bearing issues on the knee, those last two methods of exercise.

I took your advice and went to the local HS track. After a quarter-mile of backward walking, I turned around and was a little unstable with regular walking. It lasted only a few minutes. But, for us older (70+) people, take it slow. I plan to continue this routine after my regular walk/run training. Thanks.

I walk backwards regularly, and it REALLY helps my knees. it also helps with brain function.. and yes, go easy at first, it can be a little disorienting. be especially careful in my humble opinion if you have balance issues. so try holding on to a counter, or hand on the wall at home before trying longer distances. baby boomer age, fyi

I've also read somewhere that if one is walking on an uneven surface - say, at the shore on a beach - turning around and walking/running in the opposite direction on that same uneven surface (one leg/hip being lower than the other,) for the same distance gives the body a chance to sort of "even out."

I go down the stairs backwards. It's impossible to go down stairs forwards without having your knee go over your toe. I weigh too much which is hard on my knees, so backward is great for my knees. Please hold on to the railing!

You guys are seriously beyond cool. Also keep going with knee strengthening exercises because I've got some fancy named issue withaton of scar tissue in my knee it keeps blowing up for like 2 weeks at a time I cannot walk at all I'm only 38 and my dr doesn't seem to want to let me get surgery though he said it's an option... I can't keep not working for 2 weeks at a time and a physio therapist told me the years of swelling has noticeably atrophied my quad muscle..trying to do what I can over here to avoid this happening again i can't keep sitting around!

As a trainer when I have clients with knee issues or maybe that day they don't feel confident with their knees, we always do this as an exercise! Great way to burn fat and exercise opposing muscles n joints👍😁

I would like to try this. My knee is not as stable as it should be from my knee replacement. I would like to be more balanced.

Walking backwards on my lawn and walking backwards on a curved treadmill have resolved my knee pain issues. I am doing 10 minutes 3x per week. Now I run forward without knee pain. Magical exercise for knee health.

Bob and Brad You guys are AMAZING 🤩‼️ I’ve got a question - I actually tried, today, to walk backwards on my Treadmill! Do you think that’s dangerous? Thank you for all your GREAT videos 🙏🏼❣️ Keep up the good work 👍🏼😃‼️ You’re helping me with my injuries & I’m certain you help thousands & thousands of people out there all around the world 🌎‼️ Stay safe & healthy 🙏🏼❣️, Lena from Sweden 🇸🇪 😊 (I just remembered that, as a kid, I found it a lot easier to skate backwards)‼️👍🏼😄

Hi Lena from Sweden. I'm not Bob or Brad however I've been walking backwards for years on my treadmill. It's only dangerous if you lose your balance and fall. I go barefoot, helps your balance and better for your knees. Try walking sideways on your treadmill as well, for hip strengthening

I happen to run across this video that's from a year ago and really enjoyed it. Good to see both of you guys together in this video.
I started walking backwards several weeks ago and it really been enjoying doing that in my yard doing laps walking backwards and doing some forwards too. You can really feel a difference when you're walking backwards. I know what helps the front of your shins and your glutes. And really helps your balance get better. God bless you both
