The provocative, imperious and engaging Swedish-based metal group SOEN unveil their fifth album, IMPERIAL, via Silver Lining Music on January 29th 2021. Founder members Joel Ekelöf (vocals) and Martin Lopez (drums), along with Lars Enok Åhlund (keyboards and guitar), Oleksii “Zlatoyar” Kobel (bass) and Cody Ford (lead guitar) have never shied away from challenging our perceptions of life and humanity, and IMPERIAL continues SOEN’s unique journey through the psyche of our species and the conundrum of our times. Eight crisp, sharp, and supremely constructed songs spanning frustration, reflection and hope, IMPERIAL is the most direct fierce? and dynamic release of SOEN’s journey, one which continues to be deeply therapeutic for both the group’s dedicated followers and the band themselves.
“In my life I try to be as real as possible, but I think that the music, and nature, of SOEN are the only place that I really, really feel I can be myself,” explains Martin Lopez “When you’re home, doing music, writing lyrics, that is where you really get to express yourself without any judgement and with total freedom.”
Produced by Iñaki Marconi and the band, IMPERIAL was mixed and mastered by Kane Churko, who has worked with the likes of Ozzy Osbourne and Bob Dylan, giving songs such as ‘Illusion’, ‘Modesty’ and the epic closer ‘Fortune’ a dimension and richness which will reach yet more ears and minds. The sheer power and poetry of SOEN’s dynamics are more completely executed and honed than ever before, something which is perversely a product of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“It has obviously been a crazy, terrible thing for everyone, and for us as a band it has been really frustrating not being able to play shows,” says Martin Lopez “but also it has given us a clear window of opportunity to realise this album completely. We were able to spend 12 hours a day for many months bringing IMPERIAL to the place we truly wanted, mainly working on the groove and flow of the album.”
“We will always be a band that has the old will to fight for freedom and all the important things in life, the people, the underdog,” furthers Lopez “You have to take on the big question marks such as what the fuck are we doing with our lives and where’s the empathy. Why do we keep on testing and crushing ourselves as a species?”
SOEN are an undeniable cypher for all which swirls around us, something which will continue to set them apart from their peers for years to come, and IMPERIAL is the latest potent, unmissable commentary from their journey.

I'm definately not 100% sure but I hear what you are referencing and it sounds great. I was so wrapped up in the guitars that I missed that the first time around. 🤘🏻

I'd say "Imperial" is everything the name suggests.
So glad this band found me on a random Dream theater shuffle on Spotify.
That's kinda how I stumbled upon them a few months back. Antagonist was the song that I first heard and I was hooked. This new album is awesome. If you haven't listened to any of their previous work yet, and you may have by now but Antagonist and Covenant are 2 of my favs. The groove and melody on Antagonist especially is pure ear candy. 🤘🏻😎🤘🏻

@@craigwainwright3216 Yeah both are great bands. I saw Dream Theater back in '01 at the house of blues in Orlando FL. Kings X(another great band) and Dream Theater were supporting Joe Satriani. I'll never forget that. So cool and such an intimate venue to see great bands like that. Maybe Soen one day if Covid will go to hell already. Rock on🤘🏻
Allow me to correct myself. Antagonist is actually on this new album. I was unaware of that my bad. I guess I was thinking it was on a previous album since it was obviously a pre release duh lol
Funny enough, I first found out about them in a Dream Theater concert, they were the warm up band, been listening to them ever since

@@fernandopicozzi Concordo. Tellurian é indiscutivelmente uma obra prima, porém meu preferido ainda continua sendo o Lykya que foi com esse albúm que conheci o Soen. A cada novo album eles se superam, tirando o Lotus que parece uma continuação do Lykya, mesmo assim eu adoro! se fosse pra classificar um top 3 pra mim:
1 - Lykya
2 - Tellurian
3 - Imperial

Been a fan for years, and when I witnessed the first 2 pre-release videos on RUclips, I knew this album would be special. I pre-ordered right away, and waited (not so) patiently for its delivery. Since then, every track has been a daily listener for me. Such a powerful piece of art. Donning my Soen face mask, and blasting this in my car everywhere I go, I truly know that this is a masterpiece, track to track. Thank you or bringing this spectacular piece of work into reality.

the song is a banger, ofc it is. its soen, duh?
but sup with the vocal lines of verses in this one? performance is exemplary, as one would expect.
however, there is a high frequency rattle, a buzz if you will, over the vocal lines in verses and dynamically lower segments of the song.
that is not a coincidence.
It's sizzly in the beginning and then it changes to a muffled, kinda mask-sounding, parallel with the lyrics changing from a more leading to a darker character.
For me it really seems intentional because it changes really obviously. Just try to connect the different sounds with the lyrics, it follows a scheme there.
some of the songs on the record do sound strange. can't figure out what exactly is "wrong" though
