Thufir is the Duke's downfall, and his incompetence is demonstrated repeatedly. This is the sort of intelligence he should have pulled from Duncan when he returned from the desert.
Spitting isn't a Freman greeting. It's a sign of deep respect. There's no call to suggest that Stilgar would preform such an act. But it IS reasonable that Duncan has been debriefed at this point. Numbers, locations, temperament, fighting prowess, all of this information should be in the Duke's hands by now. Hence why he turns to Thufir and confers with him.
@@AndyCutright In fairness, Thufir is running counterintelligence and the spice mining operation and appears to have a leading role in the Fremen strategy. The fault lies more with Leto for not bringing in assistants and creating backups for an old man.

@@Crackshotsteph In the books Gurney, Duncan, and Thufir Hawat are all referred to as the same rank. I think the Harkonnons refer to all of them as "Atreidies Lieutenants". Duncan is specifically referred to as "Master of Arms", and Hawat is the Mentat. I don't remember if Gurney had a specific title- he's often called the "troubadour warrior", but that's a nickname not a title. I think both him and Duncan are equal in rank as "Swordmasters".
Official title; Swordmaster, but he's also Leto's right hand man, so title is irrelevant in moments like these. That's like being a consigliere to the president of the united states...no one is going to touch you and they obey your command.
That "You will address the duke as Milord or Sire" "Gurney...Just, just a moment" Exchange was so good lmao. Instantly makes it clear they're two old buddies.
And The Fremen were the opposite - they believed in patience... taking the long view. Watching Arrakis change in just 20 years was devastating to many Fremen.
@@Nervar It was VERY little time also in the books... the book starts with the grom-jabbar in Caladan; in that same day Paul is trained by Gurney cause Duncan is allready gone to Arrakis... some days later, Paul, Jessica and Leto do the trip... the Harkonnen assault on Paul happens the very first nigth after arriving; as Jessica has selected Paul's room that very same day. After the attack, Paul sleeps in a bunker room at Jessica's orders for at least a nigth; then Paul has a meeting with his father's war council in witch Leto admits not having slept a nigth since they arrived to the planet by using energy drugs (not even with drugs could a human in this universe survive more than a week without sleep; Thuffyr admits he has been posponing rest by using drugs for days after the fall of Arrakeen, and yet been close to the limit) and the very next day they meet Kynes and visit the spice harvesters. That same nigth (or the next at much; but almost inmediatelly after the harvester incident) the feast happens; in witch Kynes, the lesser noble houses and all the powerfull people of Arrakis attend... and the feast is interrupted by a revolt in a minor citty (a distraction to spread the Atreides forces before the main assault) In that very same nigth, Jessica finds out drunken Duncan Idaho; who slips to be spiying on Jessica... and later that nigth; the shield goes down and Arrakeen falls. So, acording to my calculations... a week. Pretty much the same as the movie.

Paul: "Won't you stay? We would honor you." Stilgar: "Honor requires that I be elsewhere" My favorite peice of dialog ever. You learn a lot about both characters in that simple exchange.

I appreciate how much Stilgar just does not care. He is polite by Fremen standards and that is it. He wants to be able to look Duke Leto in the eyes so he fully disregards Gurney's command to not fully approach Leto. when Gurney reacts (unaware of the true meaning) to Stilgar's gift of bodily water, Stilgar stays perfectly still because, I can only assume, he knows that Gurney is mostly just posturing. This, to me, shows how much Stilgar can read into a situation. Seeing how each man is placed in the group and how they behave telling him so much about who they each are. Duncan at the Duke's left to guide him through this interaction. Gurney to the side like a guard dog, ready to lunge in and defend. Thufir to the Duke's right to disseminate what is said to see how it works into their long term plans. Paul, back and away to learn from what they are all doing to prepare him for the day that he becomes Duke.
feel like Stilgar spitting and most of his actions was also a bit of a test. To see how much this Duke cared about the Fremen to learn a basic show of respect and reciprocate it. As well as push the basic issues in a generally blunt manner to see what sort of response the Duke would give.
Gurney did not posture, he takes his duties and honor of house Atredies very seriously. He was prepared to draw blood for what he deemed to be a grave dishonor towards Leto I. In world of Dune honor and proper code of conduct are taken a lot more seriously. Stilgar did not in fact read Gurney in whatever way you think. He was testing what sort of person was sent to Arrakis. He was just acting like a typical Freemen, fearless.
Not really its complete posturing, he purposefully acts like he doesn't care. Going into you're enemy's (which they were up until that point, no reason to assume they'd be different than the Harkonnens) stronghold isn't going to give you feelings of apathy I can assure you, no matter how badass you think you are.
Duke Leto Atreides: "As long as I govern here your people will not be hunted." Stilgar: "Hmph. That is very honorable." Translation: "Oh boy freedom from persecution for like a week. Thanks a heap, bro."
Eh, the Fremen don't really open up much to outsiders and are mistrustful of those outside their sietch. judging by his opinion of the man when they encounter Paul and Jessica, it's quite possible that Stilgar believed him... Or at least believed that Leto would try to keep his word.
0:36 - Now there's a subtle moment. Stilgar's looking to the right of the screen, i.e. on Stilgar's left. We can see he's taking a good look at Paul, who is the only person standing at that part of the table.
I love the display of Fremen culture. To us, spitting at someone is a show of disrespect or contempt but to Fremen of the deserts it is considered a show of respect and honor. Thats worldbuilding right there
@Phr34ky PHY In the book when Paul kills Jamis, he weeps over the dead body. The fremen around see that Paul, the alleged "lisan al gaib" would part ways with so much bodily fluid in an act like crying especially over a DEAD body. Whom he just killed in an HONOR fight, was bewildering to them, to say the least.
One little detail I like, when Stilgar walks into the room, he's sheathing his crysknife away. Fremen never ever unsheathe their crysknives unless they are fully prepared and ready to kill someone. Meaning Stilgar was definitely ready to kill those guards if they tried to take his weapon away.
The Fremen believe that if the Crysknife is unsheathed, it must draw blood before it can be re-sheathed. For a true portrayal of that belief, Stilgar should not have drawn his blade.
I think the blade wasn't pulled out. He was tucking in both the blade and sheath. Presumably, he had pulled the knife (still in it's sheath) out because of the guard, but didn't draw the blade. After he was cleared, he tucked the blade (still sheathed) back into his belt.
There is a loophole to that. If a crysknife is ever drawn and then not used in drawing blood from another person, the user makes a small nick on themselves before re-sheathing. It's noted in the books that Fremen blood clots incredibly fast.
Bit of a shame they cut most of the time the Atreides spent on Arrakis, getting acquainted with the locals and digging in, and the large scale battles they had against the Harkonnens.
@@Sabactus fantastic i imagine, Paul was effectively able to take over the known universe and even the spacing guild with mostly Fremen alone. the combined attack just came sooner then expected. Leto assumed they would wait until he failed to meet the first spice quota before they attacked, giving him a few months, he hoped to at least have a few divisions / legions (i forget which and sizes) of Fremen amongst the Atreides forces by then. the betreyal of the doctor and the timeline being days/weeks instead of months, as well as the amount of money spent by the enemy were all however quite a suprise. he was aware however, that he was walking into a trap.

I never read the books, so seeing Stilgar spit at Leto seemed like a weird concept, but after watching the second one i now understand how sacred his water was, and how much respect Stilgar was showing Leto
@underworldguardian704 To earn a complement from the no-bullshit Fremen, particularly regarding honor, is no passing remark. Thousands, if not millions of Fremen, have born and died without ever having reason to make such a statement to one of their own, much less an outworlder.
So well done and acted. They managed to convey the cultural clash, a huge theme of the first book, without extensive dialogue and explanation. Also, Stilgar's mild irritation at having to be there and IDGAF attitude make me laugh every time. He doesn't care for formalities, imperial politics, any of it... He's just looking out for his people. A true leader, pragmatic and loyal to the core

And frankly I felt the actress they chose just did a poor job. Flat, boring and uninteresting. All her lines are said with the exact same tone and cadence like in an elementary school play.

But I understand that they have mold the scripts after the medium, and frankly there wasn't enough exposition given to that character to make Kynes book death to have any impact in the movie.
House of Atreides is smart. They knew they will be destroyed so they tried to make an alliance and friendship of sorts with the Fremen which succeeded. Therefore, in the long-run, House Atreides, led by Paul, can utilize the Fremen in defeating the Harkonnens and Sardukar. Duke Leto and his advisors are geniuses. Playing the long game.
also how only house atreides realizes that the fremen would be as strong as the sardaukar. No other kingdom saw that Arrakis would breed an army as strong as those from Salusa Secundus. Thats why they put so much faith in the fremen.
@@Nico-dt5hu Because of Duke Leto's actions, Paul was able to rule the Fremen and become Emperor of the Galaxy in the long run until Chani's eventual death during childbirth.
The Fremen played the long game as well. They conquered the Imperium in Paul's name. Paul would have stopped them if he could, but he knew he could not. He also accepted that humanity, in the long run, would be better for it. But it was Leto II who did what Paul could not bring himself to do.

In the end of the first book the emperor arrives on arrakis demanding to know from the baron how a unit of sardukar was completely overwhelmed and annihilated by fremen prisoners composed entirely of "women , children , and old men" the sardukar did not even fight fremen military , just the civilians were ferocious enough to destroy them the movie does not do a good job of conveying how deadly the sardukar and fremen are or how absolutely insane the arrakis heat is. In the first book a sardukar transport is destroyed in the air during the destruction of house atredies and the solders while plummeting to their doom , maintain discipline , acquire targets and kill them before they hit the ground and die. the first book explains that fremen bodies do not bleed like normal humans , as soon as they are cut a scab forms almost immediately so as to not waste any moisture, arrakis' environment is harsher that salusa secundus (the sardukar training planet) and the fremen are adapted to that ultra harsh environment
When I saw the trailer for the very first time, I had no idea what the movie was going to be about. But as soon as I saw David Bautista's face, I immediately thought "RABAN!"
Stilgar does not yet know it, but in a few years, he will be the second or third most powerful man in the empire. He will become Emperor Paul's Imperial Prime Minister, Chief Executive, High Councilor, Chancellor, or whatever his title will be.

@George Song That could be true, but achieving the rank of Imperial High Chancellor, Prime Minister is not that bad. It is ample reward for helping establish the Atreides Dynasty. Stilgar is the right-hand man of an Emperor.

It's a fun detail. It also shows how insular and untraveled the Fremen are-they don't know (and wouldn't care) that it's a grave insult throughout the Imperium that would probably result in his execution anywhere else.
It is also of not the moment when Paul cries over killing Gamis, he was as the Fremen put it "Gives water to the dead." It is considered next to holly.
When you watch Dune 2, you'll quickly understand how much water means to the Fremen. Spitting requires water from the body, something Fremen don't waste. It's a massive sign of good well
I'll try to put it like this : as a fan of the books, I never expected that an actor would make me love a character more in the movies than in the books...well, I was wrong. Javier Bardem was absolutely perfect as Stilgar, so was Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho.
It is so interesting how throughout the entire first part of the movie before the attack you can constantly hear the strain in everyone's voice when it comes to time and about going to this world. They all know there is no time and that they were sent here to die.
More like: "The only matter I do not take seriously BOY, is you. Your politics bore me. Your demeanor is that of a pouting child..." 😈 Oh wait, that's a different movie.. 🤣🙄🤦
I just finished the 6 novels, and damn did they stretch his arc out. edit; And I now have finished "Hunters" and "Worms" of Dune. DAMN! They REEEEEAAAALLLLLY stretched Duncan's arc. Not too bad of a series, for the most part. Now I am diving into The Butlerian Jihad trilogy.
@@combatwombat2134 Yeah, it was good. There is a monster gap in between Heretics and God Emperor, where a lot involving Duncan/Gola takes place, that we just get minor hints at. I think there could have been another book in that gap, and it would be well accepted. I am now starting the additions to the story done by Herbert's son and Anderson, starting with House Atreides. So far so good.

That meeting is brief but well-informing. Stilgar walks in after being allowed like nobody's business just to see the duke himself *&* when asked what his demands are, stilgar only ask to leave their underground settlements. Then walks out as he's trending to other matters. He only came to give his say The Duke meanwhile, understands stilgar and negotiated a better solution that benefited them both. "we will harvest what we came for, that's it. And in return we will not bother following you & we'll respect your lands"; that's the feeling I get And thufir, assessing the situation, concludes that both parties came to an agreement, though the result will take some time (with all that power transition & saudakar sabotage)
A major strength of this movie is worldbuilding without much exposition. The spitting issue showed us the importance of water for the Fremen, among other things.
The movie crams so much worldbuilding in, it's nuts. Another favorite of mine is when Rabban shouts and all the slaves cringe. A shot that lasts like a second and isn't even the focus of the scene but immediately tells you so much about how the Harkonnens treat their underlings.
Duncan: "That 1911 is sacred to his people" Stilgar [Voice slightly muffled from behind the door]: "EIGHT THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED AND SEVENTY FOUR WORLD WARS!"
I like the little detail that Stilgar sheathes his knife _after_ walking into the room. He deadass had that thing out, ready to kill everyone if they tried to take it from him. And then the rest of the scene, it looks like Stilgar is looking away just being aloof, but actually he's looking at Paul trying to figure out where he is in this.
What I love about this exchange is Stilgar’s skepticism of Duke Leto. The Duke is saying all the right words, showing the right respect for his people’s customs, and promising to be far more benevolent than the previous Harkonan overlords. But in the end, they’re all just words. The Freeman are a people of actions, and little else. The way he leaves the room just conveys, “I’ve heard all this crap before. I’ll wait to see if your actions match your words before we discuss anything else.”
That’s what makes the Kynes spice driver seem impactful because she sees how little he cares for the spice and more for his men’s safety. She most likely got word back to Stilgar hence why Stilgar regarded Leto as honorable when he accepted Paul and Jessica
Stilgar is cautious. I think he does recognize Leto as an honorable man who might have good intentions unlike the Harkonnen. But in the end, Leto is still an outsider who does not understand the desert, so Stilgar was never gonna fully trust him.
I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for David Lynch's hot mess in 1984; I still remember all the hype around it when it rolled into theaters, and what a disaster it ended up being. I held my breath when this version finally dropped...and loved it. Every second of this movie, every scene, every line of dialogue, every nuance...it just succeeds massively. I can't wait for Part #2. I hope like hell that the bunch behind this one can keep the same momentum going.
Interesting, my opinion's exactly the opposite. This film, beautifully shot and well acted, lacks the heart and soul of the book. Which is exactly what Lynch captured in his film, despite all the things people disliked. Villeneuve's Gom Jabar scene has nothing on Lynch's. So much of this film lacks the nuance and the charm of the book.

I believe it were scenes like this one that made some people say the movie was boring, but I guarantee those scenes will made what's about to come in Part Two much more impactful and proper built up

Stilgar is best in the second part of the first book but also in Children of Dune. The second movie nailed him, especially the Children of Dune version
_“I recognize you.”_ I _love_ the double meaning here. He could be talking to Leto, saying “I recognize you as the overseer of Arrakis, because you have impressed me with your honor” or he could be talking to Paul, saying “I recognize you, because my people have been waiting for you.”
And so wrong. In the books it was the first time that Stilgar will realise that Paul is something special as he is the one 'knowing' about the gift of Water. Not some minor underling.

Gurney was ignorant at times (like this one), but had a good heart. I'd think that a person of Gurney's position would be more diplomatic. Duncan failed in briefing Duke Leto & his staff on the Fremen social & diplomatic graces. If Gurney would've attacked Stilgar, Gurney would've gotten embarrassed, fucked up & had his ass handed to him on a silver plater just for testing Stilgar, then killed. But I guess Gurney would learn that later on with the smugglers who rescued him & the remaining 73 Atreides Soldiers, plus his personal engagement/interactions with the Fremen (FreeMen).
@@LandersWorkshopGurney was considered one of the best warriors in the Known Universe alongside Duncan, both of whom were drilled in the pits of the Harkonnen Gladiatorial Arenas and given Ginaz training, and they both managed to take relatively soft House Trooper conscripts and turn them into the most skilled Landsraad force in the Imperium, outshined only by the Sardaukar, who are cut from the same cloth as the Fremen. Gurney could have taken Stilgar. He might not survive the fight, but he could certainly take Stilgar with him.
Even though the film was rather long, I still felt like they should have spent a little more with the House Atriedes on Arrakis before the Harkonnen’s invasion.
That, plus the scene with Yueh and Jessica, and Gurney's baliset. Really should've had the opportunity to do an intermission--a fixture of the epic film, like Lawrence of Arabia (to which this film is obviously indebted).
Sucks that this is Thufir’s last appearance in the entire film. There are behind the scenes footage and photos of him being filmed for other parts that were cut out, especially after the sneak attack on the Atreides. I do hope he is given decent screen time in the next part, but his entire arc in the novel was completely cut out…

Spitting isn't a Freman greeting. It's a sign of deep respect. There's no call to suggest that Stilgar would preform such an act. But it IS reasonable that Duncan has been debriefed at this point. Numbers, locations, temperament, fighting prowess, all of this information should be in the Duke's hands by now. Hence why he turns to Thufir and confers with him.

Duncan is specifically referred to as "Master of Arms", and Hawat is the Mentat. I don't remember if Gurney had a specific title- he's often called the "troubadour warrior", but that's a nickname not a title. I think both him and Duncan are equal in rank as "Swordmasters".
Official title; Swordmaster, but he's also Leto's right hand man, so title is irrelevant in moments like these. That's like being a consigliere to the president of the united states...no one is going to touch you and they obey your command.

After the attack, Paul sleeps in a bunker room at Jessica's orders for at least a nigth; then Paul has a meeting with his father's war council in witch Leto admits not having slept a nigth since they arrived to the planet by using energy drugs (not even with drugs could a human in this universe survive more than a week without sleep; Thuffyr admits he has been posponing rest by using drugs for days after the fall of Arrakeen, and yet been close to the limit) and the very next day they meet Kynes and visit the spice harvesters. That same nigth (or the next at much; but almost inmediatelly after the harvester incident) the feast happens; in witch Kynes, the lesser noble houses and all the powerfull people of Arrakis attend... and the feast is interrupted by a revolt in a minor citty (a distraction to spread the Atreides forces before the main assault)
In that very same nigth, Jessica finds out drunken Duncan Idaho; who slips to be spiying on Jessica... and later that nigth; the shield goes down and Arrakeen falls.
So, acording to my calculations... a week. Pretty much the same as the movie.
This movie was perfectly casted. Every person in that room has their own presence, and it's phenominal.
Stop drooling over Denis already, it's just an alright movie.

I appreciate how much Stilgar just does not care. He is polite by Fremen standards and that is it. He wants to be able to look Duke Leto in the eyes so he fully disregards Gurney's command to not fully approach Leto. when Gurney reacts (unaware of the true meaning) to Stilgar's gift of bodily water, Stilgar stays perfectly still because, I can only assume, he knows that Gurney is mostly just posturing.
This, to me, shows how much Stilgar can read into a situation. Seeing how each man is placed in the group and how they behave telling him so much about who they each are. Duncan at the Duke's left to guide him through this interaction. Gurney to the side like a guard dog, ready to lunge in and defend. Thufir to the Duke's right to disseminate what is said to see how it works into their long term plans. Paul, back and away to learn from what they are all doing to prepare him for the day that he becomes Duke.
feel like Stilgar spitting and most of his actions was also a bit of a test. To see how much this Duke cared about the Fremen to learn a basic show of respect and reciprocate it. As well as push the basic issues in a generally blunt manner to see what sort of response the Duke would give.
Gurney did not posture, he takes his duties and honor of house Atredies very seriously. He was prepared to draw blood for what he deemed to be a grave dishonor towards Leto I. In world of Dune honor and proper code of conduct are taken a lot more seriously. Stilgar did not in fact read Gurney in whatever way you think. He was testing what sort of person was sent to Arrakis. He was just acting like a typical Freemen, fearless.
Not really its complete posturing, he purposefully acts like he doesn't care. Going into you're enemy's (which they were up until that point, no reason to assume they'd be different than the Harkonnens) stronghold isn't going to give you feelings of apathy I can assure you, no matter how badass you think you are.

Eh, the Fremen don't really open up much to outsiders and are mistrustful of those outside their sietch. judging by his opinion of the man when they encounter Paul and Jessica, it's quite possible that Stilgar believed him... Or at least believed that Leto would try to keep his word.

I love the display of Fremen culture. To us, spitting at someone is a show of disrespect or contempt but to Fremen of the deserts it is considered a show of respect and honor.

The fremen around see that Paul, the alleged "lisan al gaib" would part ways with so much bodily fluid in an act like crying especially over a DEAD body. Whom he just killed in an HONOR fight, was bewildering to them, to say the least.

One little detail I like, when Stilgar walks into the room, he's sheathing his crysknife away. Fremen never ever unsheathe their crysknives unless they are fully prepared and ready to kill someone. Meaning Stilgar was definitely ready to kill those guards if they tried to take his weapon away.
The Fremen believe that if the Crysknife is unsheathed, it must draw blood before it can be re-sheathed. For a true portrayal of that belief, Stilgar should not have drawn his blade.

I think the blade wasn't pulled out. He was tucking in both the blade and sheath. Presumably, he had pulled the knife (still in it's sheath) out because of the guard, but didn't draw the blade. After he was cleared, he tucked the blade (still sheathed) back into his belt.

There is a loophole to that. If a crysknife is ever drawn and then not used in drawing blood from another person, the user makes a small nick on themselves before re-sheathing. It's noted in the books that Fremen blood clots incredibly fast.

Bit of a shame they cut most of the time the Atreides spent on Arrakis, getting acquainted with the locals and digging in, and the large scale battles they had against the Harkonnens.
I wonder how things would have played out if the Atreides had time to consolidate power and cultivate their relationship with the Fremen more.
@@Sabactus fantastic i imagine, Paul was effectively able to take over the known universe and even the spacing guild with mostly Fremen alone. the combined attack just came sooner then expected. Leto assumed they would wait until he failed to meet the first spice quota before they attacked, giving him a few months, he hoped to at least have a few divisions / legions (i forget which and sizes) of Fremen amongst the Atreides forces by then. the betreyal of the doctor and the timeline being days/weeks instead of months, as well as the amount of money spent by the enemy were all however quite a suprise. he was aware however, that he was walking into a trap.

@@andreasbuehler1821 Unfortunately a movie only has so much time to tell a tale. And on top of already having to condense a story invariably lots of stuff they do film or start work on also gets cut out. 3 hours is about as far as you can push a movie for theatre.
I never read the books, so seeing Stilgar spit at Leto seemed like a weird concept, but after watching the second one i now understand how sacred his water was, and how much respect Stilgar was showing Leto

So well done and acted. They managed to convey the cultural clash, a huge theme of the first book, without extensive dialogue and explanation. Also, Stilgar's mild irritation at having to be there and IDGAF attitude make me laugh every time. He doesn't care for formalities, imperial politics, any of it... He's just looking out for his people. A true leader, pragmatic and loyal to the core

And frankly I felt the actress they chose just did a poor job. Flat, boring and uninteresting. All her lines are said with the exact same tone and cadence like in an elementary school play.

House of Atreides is smart. They knew they will be destroyed so they tried to make an alliance and friendship of sorts with the Fremen which succeeded. Therefore, in the long-run, House Atreides, led by Paul, can utilize the Fremen in defeating the Harkonnens and Sardukar. Duke Leto and his advisors are geniuses. Playing the long game.
also how only house atreides realizes that the fremen would be as strong as the sardaukar. No other kingdom saw that Arrakis would breed an army as strong as those from Salusa Secundus. Thats why they put so much faith in the fremen.
@@Nico-dt5hu Because of Duke Leto's actions, Paul was able to rule the Fremen and become Emperor of the Galaxy in the long run until Chani's eventual death during childbirth.
The Fremen played the long game as well. They conquered the Imperium in Paul's name. Paul would have stopped them if he could, but he knew he could not. He also accepted that humanity, in the long run, would be better for it. But it was Leto II who did what Paul could not bring himself to do.

In the end of the first book the emperor arrives on arrakis demanding to know from the baron how a unit of sardukar was completely overwhelmed and annihilated by fremen prisoners composed entirely of "women , children , and old men" the sardukar did not even fight fremen military , just the civilians were ferocious enough to destroy them
the movie does not do a good job of conveying how deadly the sardukar and fremen are or how absolutely insane the arrakis heat is. In the first book a sardukar transport is destroyed in the air during the destruction of house atredies and the solders while plummeting to their doom , maintain discipline , acquire targets and kill them before they hit the ground and die.
the first book explains that fremen bodies do not bleed like normal humans , as soon as they are cut a scab forms almost immediately so as to not waste any moisture, arrakis' environment is harsher that salusa secundus (the sardukar training planet) and the fremen are adapted to that ultra harsh environment

@George Song That could be true, but achieving the rank of Imperial High Chancellor, Prime Minister is not that bad. It is ample reward for helping establish the Atreides Dynasty. Stilgar is the right-hand man of an Emperor.

It's a fun detail. It also shows how insular and untraveled the Fremen are-they don't know (and wouldn't care) that it's a grave insult throughout the Imperium that would probably result in his execution anywhere else.
It is also of not the moment when Paul cries over killing Gamis, he was as the Fremen put it "Gives water to the dead." It is considered next to holly.

I'll try to put it like this : as a fan of the books, I never expected that an actor would make me love a character more in the movies than in the books...well, I was wrong. Javier Bardem was absolutely perfect as Stilgar, so was Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho.

The Duke meanwhile, understands stilgar and negotiated a better solution that benefited them both. "we will harvest what we came for, that's it. And in return we will not bother following you & we'll respect your lands"; that's the feeling I get
And thufir, assessing the situation, concludes that both parties came to an agreement, though the result will take some time (with all that power transition & saudakar sabotage)

A major strength of this movie is worldbuilding without much exposition. The spitting issue showed us the importance of water for the Fremen, among other things.
The movie crams so much worldbuilding in, it's nuts. Another favorite of mine is when Rabban shouts and all the slaves cringe. A shot that lasts like a second and isn't even the focus of the scene but immediately tells you so much about how the Harkonnens treat their underlings.
The way Thufir says "yes, it will take time..." I expected to see a Star Wars wipe transition.
Duncan: "That 1911 is sacred to his people"
Stilgar [Voice slightly muffled from behind the door]: "EIGHT THOUSAND TWO HUNDRED AND SEVENTY FOUR WORLD WARS!"
Stilgar: "What's the most you've ever lost in a spice toss?"
I like the little detail that Stilgar sheathes his knife _after_ walking into the room.
He deadass had that thing out, ready to kill everyone if they tried to take it from him.
And then the rest of the scene, it looks like Stilgar is looking away just being aloof, but actually he's looking at Paul trying to figure out where he is in this.
He is amazing in the second movie.

The political maneuvering within Dune was masterful. Few other series that I have read have possessed such depth and intrigue.

Every single drop of moisture is far more precious than all of the spice on Arrakis combined.
What I love about this exchange is Stilgar’s skepticism of Duke Leto. The Duke is saying all the right words, showing the right respect for his people’s customs, and promising to be far more benevolent than the previous Harkonan overlords. But in the end, they’re all just words. The Freeman are a people of actions, and little else.
The way he leaves the room just conveys, “I’ve heard all this crap before. I’ll wait to see if your actions match your words before we discuss anything else.”
That’s what makes the Kynes spice driver seem impactful because she sees how little he cares for the spice and more for his men’s safety. She most likely got word back to Stilgar hence why Stilgar regarded Leto as honorable when he accepted Paul and Jessica
Stilgar is cautious. I think he does recognize Leto as an honorable man who might have good intentions unlike the Harkonnen.
But in the end, Leto is still an outsider who does not understand the desert, so Stilgar was never gonna fully trust him.
I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for David Lynch's hot mess in 1984; I still remember all the hype around it when it rolled into theaters, and what a disaster it ended up being.
I held my breath when this version finally dropped...and loved it. Every second of this movie, every scene, every line of dialogue, every nuance...it just succeeds massively.
I can't wait for Part #2. I hope like hell that the bunch behind this one can keep the same momentum going.
Interesting, my opinion's exactly the opposite. This film, beautifully shot and well acted, lacks the heart and soul of the book. Which is exactly what Lynch captured in his film, despite all the things people disliked.
Villeneuve's Gom Jabar scene has nothing on Lynch's. So much of this film lacks the nuance and the charm of the book.

Lynch didn't "Capture" ANYTHING in his film but directing AWAY from the book and message OF the book. NOTHING about Lynch's film captured about what Dune is about as it's made obvious in VARIOUS scenes that Lynch purposefully strives away from!

Stilgar is best in the second part of the first book but also in Children of Dune. The second movie nailed him, especially the Children of Dune version

And so wrong. In the books it was the first time that Stilgar will realise that Paul is something special as he is the one 'knowing' about the gift of Water. Not some minor underling.
@@Asperger0815 calling duncan idaho a minor underling is heresy of the highest order. that guy was the only one spending time with the fremen so it makes sense to have him be aware of the local customs. it would have been a nice touch to have paul understand it aswell, but having duncan be the one who knows about it works perfectly.

The 'mmm' grunt is a nod to Bardem's Skyfall villain.
I love the way Stilgar grunts in conversations. Reminds me of what I'm thinking during conversations I'd be having.
Gurney was ignorant at times (like this one), but had a good heart. I'd think that a person of Gurney's position would be more diplomatic. Duncan failed in briefing Duke Leto & his staff on the Fremen social & diplomatic graces. If Gurney would've attacked Stilgar, Gurney would've gotten embarrassed, fucked up & had his ass handed to him on a silver plater just for testing Stilgar, then killed. But I guess Gurney would learn that later on with the smugglers who rescued him & the remaining 73 Atreides Soldiers, plus his personal engagement/interactions with the Fremen (FreeMen).
I don't know about that Gurney is easily as good as Stilgar in a fight my dude.
@@LandersWorkshopGurney was considered one of the best warriors in the Known Universe alongside Duncan, both of whom were drilled in the pits of the Harkonnen Gladiatorial Arenas and given Ginaz training, and they both managed to take relatively soft House Trooper conscripts and turn them into the most skilled Landsraad force in the Imperium, outshined only by the Sardaukar, who are cut from the same cloth as the Fremen.
Gurney could have taken Stilgar. He might not survive the fight, but he could certainly take Stilgar with him.
Even though the film was rather long, I still felt like they should have spent a little more with the House Atriedes on Arrakis before the Harkonnen’s invasion.
That, plus the scene with Yueh and Jessica, and Gurney's baliset. Really should've had the opportunity to do an intermission--a fixture of the epic film, like Lawrence of Arabia (to which this film is obviously indebted).

Sucks that this is Thufir’s last appearance in the entire film. There are behind the scenes footage and photos of him being filmed for other parts that were cut out, especially after the sneak attack on the Atreides. I do hope he is given decent screen time in the next part, but his entire arc in the novel was completely cut out…
