I'm born and raised in the outback. Been a survivalist my entire life. I watch a lot of survival videos on youtube as it's something I'm interested in. I have to tell you that was perhaps the clearest, most enjoyable bush craft video I have ever had the pleasure of watching. Thank you very much. Subscribed.

Awesome video, except at 4:06 your gear ratio is reversed. There are other reasons you might want the thin end pointing down, but not for the reason you mentioned. Holding the thin end and pointing the thick end down into the socket gives you faster movement at the friction interface. Here's why:
The thick and thin ends spin with equal angular velocity (spin speed) since they are one stick. The spin speed is determined by the number of revolutions the stick makes as it rolls along your palm each pass of your hands. The thin end rolls more times during one pass of your hands, and therefore holding the thin end allows you to spin the stick faster.
But the spin speed isn't really what matters. The tangential velocity at the friction interface is what really generates the heat (along with downward force, of course). Bigger diameter and higher spin speed both make for greater tangential velocity, and both are maximized when you hold the thin end and point the thick end down.

This is by far the best video on how to make and use a hand drill that I have ever seen. You explain everything in great detail and your camera angles (especially when you were creating the dust for the ember) and unmatchable. Good job!

@Nativesurvival You should really look into making these available on DVD. You have a God given gift for teaching. I told my wife, that if I had Mitch for every year as a teacher growing up, who know's where I would be carreer wise. I have a 5 year old son, and though I am 48, I cant wait to start teaching him these things in order that he will always know "HOW" to survive. Thank you Mitch. Stephen....Ohio

You make it look so easy Mitch. Or corse for you it is fairly easy. I live out west now and altho I havn't tried doing a bow or hand drill fire here yet, I will as soon as it stops snowing! LOL! Also, I loved that camera angle you did, showing the notch in your hearth board while you were drilling, showing how the dust forms and what it does, then ultimately could even see the orange glow of the ember. Great job!

Mitch, great vid, awsome tips. Now I know for sure that I have been applying way to much pressure. I just thought that the mullein I was using was to fragile. It would almost always split and shatter from the burnt end up the shaft so now I know to prep the burn end as you showed in the begining. Thanks for posting, keep em' coming

i just used Jute same as on our site, didnt have time that day to gather a bundle, was pressed for time..
ive tried the floating technique a few times but it doesnt feel natural at all to me, maybe at some point in the future it will, but i like the standard method and i can do it for a few mins no issues usually so the floating tech hasnt been necessary yet..

Very kind of you. I plan to use much of what I have learned from watching your instructions, now that the weather has changed, thankfully. Too dry here in the city to practice, plus I live on the second floor of our building. Way too much of a fire hazard. Thank you for all you do. Even if I have to wait another week, it keeps me hopping from foot to foot to get out to Cheney Lake which is close to Wichita. I need to go back and re-watch some too. If I don't use it, at my age, I will lose it. Be safe and thanks again. Peace out.

@nwtipton No man sorry its alluding you but i would hate to have to roll the small side so many times to get the thick end to make a revolution, its heavy, clunky, and slower. Think of it this way.. with 1 rev on the bigger side i would go across my hand when spinning, the small end would make multiple rev's going across my hand.

That is the way I do it and I get embers much quicker. Not taking anything away from this video, nor respect for its maker, but I would suggest trying the drill around the other way and doing a time test. My experience here in Australia with local woods is about a 20 percent improvement in time with the thick end down.

Could I clamp a cattail into a cordless drill to practice getting the notch size/angle/thickness correct before moving on to putting it all together? I know I would have to use light pressure so that I don't crush the cattail. I al
