Tarot cards are originally renaissance Italian playing cards that were used to predict horoscopes and future happenings because renaissance Italy thought those super fun. Nowadays people interested in astrology etc might take them more seriously but I really can't see where tarot is offending... but these are super cute, I love your character designs! I hope I can get the hang of watercolours some day because I really like how you use them.
I really actually wanted to do a tarot card but I had trouble narrowing it down and picking just one. The set of four queens seemed more doable for me. :D I'm so happy you like my art! And don't worry! With some practice you'll get the hang of it and be really wonderful at it! I know it. :>

I just love how someone - an artist - had the balls to tell a group of artists what they can’t create for fear of being offensive. Artists _should_ be offensive at times. We create what we’re passionate about. It’s just really disappointing. I use them every day, and I would have laughed so hard if I saw someone illustrate a tarot deck being burned by a priest or some shit. I have half a mind to do that myself now 😂
I honestly was very confused as to why it was considered offensive? But then again the theme picking is out of my hands. BUT! I mostly didn't do it because I didn't know which tarot card to pick... Too many good options. That was the issue I was mostly having...where the Queen Suits were so much easier for me to do/figure out.
Tarot cards are nothing religious (i used to read them at ren fairs in highschool ) they are astrology mixed with a magic 8ball with a dash of uncommon skill. The cards are varry difficult to read due to meaning of ech card changes depending what's above below or on top. Also depend how your asking the question of them Its weird hearing people thought they were a religious is kinda hilarious to me tho I've met allot of people who thought i a devil worshiper because of them.... High school summer jobs am i right lol xD
Oh right, I completely forgot how American the internet art community is and how religious some American people probably are (at least compared to Nordic), really didn't have that Tarot = Devil connection in my head :D It's a bit... hysteric? to react to them so strongly seeing their history and popularity.
Just a quick thing about tarot cards. I'm no expert on them but I know more then I'll ever need in my life. Tarot cards get a a bit of bad a bad rep because they are often associated with witchcraft but they are really more like a tool to get you to think about things related to the reading. They help consider sides of the subject that you might not have thought about otherwise. It also puts people off because there are cards in the deck like "the Devil" and "Death" which really aren't even half as ominous as the names imply. The devil card is about breaking boundaries and the death card is about endings. Also if anyone reading this is even considering getting into tarot cards, you should always take it with a grain of salt. No matter how much symbolism is piled on them, they are still just cards and cards are not magic. Anyway I love your vids Lemi and your stuff is really cool.
Ohhh! That's probably why! I never associated them with anything bad, I just figured the cards had their meanings. I know that some TV shows or movies when someone pulls the "death" card the people are like OMG YOU'RE GONNA DIE...LIKE RIGHT NOW. But I always thought that was just the movies exaggerating stuff. I never knew some people associated them with such sinister stuff. It really gives it a bad rep. Kinda like when that rock and roll came out and everyone is like DEVIL MUSIC! lol
I had a reading once and it was very helpful and thoughtful...and it didn't really seem like anything "magic" it was just...shuffling cards, thinking of questions and life, and then the person lays out the order of the cards and tells a bit of a story according to the meanings.
The_IRIS_flower The devil card is actually one being chained to something. I suppose you're half right-- although it isn't so much of an ending rather a beginning.
Aoki Lapis I'm not so sure about that devil definition since that sounds a lot more like the hanging man but the definitions do vary between decks.

I remember when I got my first migraine, I experienced an aura. I couldn't see on the left side of my eye, and I thought I was going blind 😂😂 I was 11 lol
I get optical migraines all the time! I have severe vision loss for mins to hours, but i rarely get the splitting headache. It's horrible x.x But between the vision loss and the headaches I'm glad I don't get the headaches.
Hope Klein man, you're so lucky that you don't get the headaches. It's absolutely terrible,and on top of that I always feel nauseous ;-;
I'm not sure if I've ever had an aura? I usually just slap my bunny sleeping mask on my eyes and get into a weird position and hide under the covers and hope my brain doesn't explode...or I don't explode vomit from my mouth T_T Oh migraines are terrible! I'm so sorry you get them!

Oh my goodness. I love all of them! If I had to pick one though... hmm...probably spades. Though, I love the whole Merida, Scotland feel of the clubs. The hearts looks a lot lighter and brighter then the others which I really like. Nice job!
Sisters don't have to be blood related silly. Also id sell them as individually and in a pack though the pack should be discounted slightly. Buying seperately should always be more than the bulk buy. Though thays just my opinion :P

Whose idea was it to limit the artists by saying “no tarot cards”?? I use tarot cards daily and would have _loved_ to see interpretations of any number of them.
Offensive my ass, who cares? What _if_ one of you was Christian and was against the use of divination tools? So what, make a passionate piece of art that expresses just that. I’m livid to hear that someone had the balls to limit the expression of artists for fear of _offending_ people. Art _should_ offend people sometimes! Art can make a huge and meaningful impact in political movements, and I’m all for that. I’m sick of this SJW culture.
I would be out as soon as I heard the word “offensive”, but I also don’t blame you for sticking with it. Making a name for yourself as an artist is hard these days, and tags like YTAC are great for publicity.
For the record, today, tarot is not necessarily linked to any specific religion. I don’t claim any religion, but as I said before, I do use them every day. They weren’t even originally linked to any religion or belief system. It was a _game_ .
Eek. If you think I'm in it for publicity, you're certainly wrong. My YTAC videos get much less views than my other content. I do it so that I can help build the art community on RUclips and try to get others to join in on the fun of a common theme. I'm sad that the original theme was looked at in a poor light though. I never thought there was a religious implication or anything offensive about them? But it also made me second guess what I thought tarot cards were because of the theme change. I'm glad you're shedding light on the topic. I actually feel really bad that the tarot cards got a bad rap from what seems like...no good reason. I had a reading once and I thought it was really interesting and helpful, it gave me a lot to think about. :)
I'd like to clarify something as the manager of the ytac... We did not ban the theme or limit anyone's freedom to use tarot cards as a theme. There were simply a few artists who said they personally felt it might be offensive content to some viewers and decided they would rather not do content based on them (so in theory it was actually there freedom to choose not to do that theme) And so to accommodate there feelings we broadened the theme to involve any theme revolving around cards and still had several artists in the group do artworks based on tarot cards. So no one was told to limit there expression, simply that they didnt have to express the theme in that way if they didnt want to. Sorry if it seems like we banned the content all together for it being offensive, that was not the case. In fact one of our artists Monique Renee lovessss tarot cards and did a very cool piece and commentary based on the subject if you'd like to go check her out!
Oh, Lemmy - I certainly didn’t mean to suggest you were only interested in YTAC for the sake of publicity, only that it’s a significant factor to consider in such a situation - which I clearly misunderstood. With a little better understanding, I can appreciate being considerate of the others’ feelings... personally I just find it incredibly disappointing seeing so many innocuous things in so many areas being altered for often nothing more than the sake of excessive sensitivity. But that’s my opinion alone, and I’d never expect it to have any bearing whatsoever on the decisions of anyone else.
In today’s political climate, it seemed the logical conclusion upon hearing the word “offensive” in the vague context. I feel obligated to admit I jumped to that conclusion a little too quickly. I can understand why you (Lemmy) would want to avoid getting into too many details of it there when the video should be about the art. Which I really should have mentioned before - is awesome as always. I often find myself wishing I’d made color thumbnails, but hindsight is always 20/20, right? They look beautiful at any rate, and I think you still managed to get a nice range of diversity throughout the cards. There’s only four after all. I think you did pretty damned good!
Aw thank you! I just didn't mean to upset anyone by what I said, I honestly kinda just wanted to know more about the cards and stuff like that. I also didn't understand why anyone WOULD view it as offensive, you know? So it was interesting to see why people think it MAY be that way and it's interesting to also see that the majority of people are explaining how it ISN'T offensive (which is awesome!). As for me, I was going to do a tarot card but I had difficulty settling on ONE that I REALLY wanted to do, and my focus was spread too thin because of the large amount of options. The set of Queens seemed to be something I could wrap my mind around though. Many other artists did some cool Tarot cards though! Like Monique Renee and also Sakuems. I'm pretty sure..um...lets see... Sophira Lou did 3 cards actually. :)
I get what you mean about people being sensitive too though... Sometimes I try to phrase things in the nicest way I can imagine, and it still offends people. Or they'll take away something completely different from what I actually meant. So the struggle with that is real.
That being said, I respect what you said! It's okay to be upset over it. Especially since it seems that from what other people say, that those cards totally got a bad reputation for no seemingly good reason at all. That's like me seeing a menorah and being upset. Or me assuming that because a card says "death" on it that it's evil. Or like how those people thought Rock and Roll was the music of the devil. It kinda sucks that it gets a bad rap but with time hopefully it'll diminish. I think people even used to think dungeons and dragons was evil lol, crazy. HOWEVER! I'm really glad though that people are writing such thoughtful comments explaining what it really is so that people who see my videos can read those comments and know themselves. :)
Hi, when you mentioned that you get migraines, I instantly thought of what I use for them. Which is peppermint oil, it works really good. What you do is you put a drop of oil on each temple and three drops on the back of your neck. I hope it works for you and don't push yourself to hard, your health should always come first.

I actually agree with that a LOT. Like, it's so overwhelming to have so many videos coming out with the same topic in ONE day. I also think that when I get really low views on a YTAC video, it's because people just can't watch the theme anymore. LOL Like, they're done for the day. xDD
I would consider doing it a day later from now on, but it's kinda...frowned upon. We all upload on the same day. XD;; Which I get raises awareness and it's just what we do... but on the other side of it, it's not that great sometimes for the individual. :)
Maybe it would be worth considering to re-think how the collective operates now that there's so many members. Like maybe have a whole week where each day two or three people post their videos, or something? Something worth discussing in your Super Secret YTAC Meetings :D
The problem is that I think Friday is the upload day for most of the girls too...so that would probably interfere with people's schedules. D: I'm not sure how it would go over! However...they ARE actually making a lot of changes right now, I wonder...hmm..

Tarot cards have more of a sprirtual connection. When it comes to religons some christians used to (and most likely still) associate them with the devil. Wicca and maybe some other pagan religons (i dont know about practices for anything pagan other than wicca) use them as quite the staple! However to suggest you need to be of a certain faith or any faith at all to use them is a bit crazy.
When it comes to how it could be offensive-chances are it was lack of knowledge about tarot cards that made people worried. For example, the Rider-Waite deck is the deck that most people look to. And when you look at the cards? Chocked full of symbolism. I won't get into the exact details since this is already long enough as is however. Even still however, it would take at least some research to accarutely represent the card(s) chosen so that was most likely the reasoning.
Even still I really wished everyone had been okay with tarot cards. It's a joy to see interpations even if they arent close to the meanig of the card. Some people are just whiny and will complain about anything sadly so the fear is warranted. :/
For selling these in your store, I suggest you both offer them individually and as a pack of 4. Of course, once someone buys one, you can't sell them as a pack anymore, but having it as an option would be good. And to incentivise people to buy all 4 together, have a reduced price for the pack together (for example, if you sold these for $25 each, instead of $100 for all for, something like $85 instead).
Tarot cards are a pagan medium of divination, which is basically a term used for future prediction. Using them is considered a form of magick in many pagan faiths. They aren't necessarily considered sacred to a specific religion. I know that in Wicca they are a lot more personally sacred than universally. If that makes sense? Rather than tarot cards as a whole being sacred, it's more like a specific deck is sacred to a specific person. I'm not sure if any of that made sense, but I tried lol.

I love the Queen of Hearts and Clubs, (Hearts is soo girly) and they both suit their shape. I think you should sell them in a set since they are a collective, it'll just be too sad to have one and not the others.... and as for the sister thing? Maybe different mothers since kings back then usually take many wives? *cough king henry cough*
And I recently bought one of those corner rounders too and had no idea what they were called and when I was describing it to the shop assistance, she laughed and said a lot of people don't know what they are called either, hahaha.
As for Tarot cards (at least modern use), Ive been getting into them recently and found out that they are something that wicca/pagan uses alot (its a type of religion, i guess?) but not really confined to them and since witches are usually associated to bad spirits, devil, etc, it gets frown upon on a lot but that is not the case if you really look into them. Wicca/Pagans have a sorta natural lifestyle but is often looked at badly because they believe in magic and supernatural things too. I think one of the YTAC, Monique, explains tarot cards very well in her video for the theme. I don't think of it as predicting the future but more of asking for a sign for a decision that you may make but not really sure of since tarot cards usually are full of symbolism. I mean, usually when I make a decision, its based on a sign sometimes too so its better to ask the cards instead of waiting for that sign to eventually appear. I guess... sorta like a mediation or stress relief thing. The one thing that I think that does scare some people is that you need to bond with them to have accurate readings and that may come off religious but when a deck of cards is yours and you feel like it can help you answer your own questions, its more symbolic than anything.
I'm not an expert on tarot cards, I've tried to explain it as best as I can but I'm still learning about them but its quite relaxing and interesting reading and learning more about it.
I would have drawn a satanic goth witch sacrificing a chicken naked in a church just out if spite. (And yes I know that witchcraft and Satanism are not linked, I would have done it anyway.)
The variations in skin tone aren't too unrealistic for sisters, there's quite the stark difference between the skin tones of me and my younger sister, the only thing that's a little iffy is them all having different hair colors. I've personally never seen a family with the genes for four different hair colors but who knows? Anyways, great job on these, they're all lovely.
from what I know from my brother is that tarot don't really need to be religious. It's really your prefferece. The broad thing is basically the cards depict what the universe has in store for you. they are very broad though because they are just ment for you to kind of take into account and not to live you love by
most of the push back against tarot cards is based off alot of religions considering it witchcraft; people have become more accepting of wicca and similar practices recently but alot of major christian communities are pretty strict about stuff, when i was a kid i new a lot fo people who weren't even allowed to celebrate halloween. religion is weird tbh.

Wait! That plane thing happened to me before. We got to the airport around noon, and found out that our flight had been delayed until like 6. So, no big deal, right. We go back home (I live like a 45 minute drive away from the airport) We come back at 5, and wait in the airport UNTIL MIDNIGHT. And then they say that the flight has been delayed until like 8 in the morning. We get a voucher for a hotel, and get LIKE 4 HOURS OF SLEEP before we have to go back to the airport. We get to California around lunch. Oh, and did I mention this was my first plane ride ever? Yeah... Fun times!
The Queen of Clubs is my favorite! No worries! I honestly don't mind that you posted late. Life happens. Plus your expirience oddly sounds reminiscent to a missions trip I went on to Washignton State. Everything that could go wrong went wrong...😅 Our vans never picked us up from the airport, so we were stuck there for a few hours. When we finally got vans we left and decided to go eat dinner. (We hadn't eaten all day because of travel and plane hopping/weird time zone changes) We had to wait an hour at the restaurant to even be seated. Then when we finally ate and left one of our team members threw up in a Wal-Mart parking lot. 😖 Then when we finally made it to our destination we all got these weird rashes that spread all around our bodies...(It was gradual) sooo yeah. That's only the half of It! I feel your pain! That was only the first day of the missions trip! I'm not going to go into detail about my porta potty fiasco...😑😤😨 But yeah totally get what you mean when the earth comes together (maybe the devil?!) to make your life miserable. 😂😂 Anyways I survived lol. Great artwork!!

I love these designs! They kinda give me a disney princess vibe - Alice (hearts), Snow White (diamonds), Merida (clubs) and Jasmine (spades) which I think works with the sister story.

Also, tarot cards are something I always look to when I get art block, they usually have really pretty art, and they tell the future. But I don’t get why people are so awkward around tarot cards, it’s just another religion! Like Christian, Paagan, Catholic, Buddhist, and other religions, tarot cards are a way to tell your future. But I don’t know a lot about tarot, sorry for running my mouth! 😅
*giggles* I love how you pronounce Tarot. Lol. It's pronounced Taroh. But honestly, they are cards used to sort of tell peoples fortunes. People use them to help understand problems they have, or even help them decide how to handle things in their life. They are based around the Wiccan, or more spiritualism religions. I can understand the controversy behind them, but honestly I think if you wanted to do Tarot, I would look up the original deck (Rider-Waite) and the meaning/symbolism of the different elements of the cards.It would be a good way to respect those who truly believe in them.

Tarot Cards are a divination tool. Divination usually means fortune telling and it has Occult / Pagan ties. It's sort of like your horoscope. For some people, it's just a fun thing. Other people might take it a little more seriously if they believe in magic. Tarot isn't necessarily religious, but some religions ban anything to do with magic / witches / pagan for whatever reason.

Tarot cards have a lot of myths associated with them, most people feel like they're ouija boards and that they can let in evil spirits and most people are uneasy because they feel they can predict the future.. Other people believe you can have really bad luck if you use them because it 'forces spirits to tell the future.' IRL, 'tarot' began as an actual French card game and then the cards were re-appropriated for fortunetelling.
I have a tarot deck, and I treat them a lot more like horoscope cards. I use them for guidance and to clarify emotions. They are really accurate! But like any 'magic' device, it works only if you buy into it. There are also symbols that can be misinterpreted easily if you aren't aware of their meanings underneath. For example the card 'death' is more about 'breaking away from the past' and 'change' rather than literal death. So I understand why they might think twice about doing a tarot card challenge. There's also the card 'the hanged man' I could easily see how people could take issue with making multiple depictions of that card, too.
They are part of Wicca culture. Being apart of the culture I will say if you dont know the proper way of doing with them dont use them until you do. They are also part of readings, talking to the dead and spells, wether its protection, curing or for holidays. Wacca holidays are sorta like Mexican holidays but different at the same time. I'm not trying to be rude towards anyone but that's just how they are.
I guess Tarot cards are considered offensive offensive to those super religious people. I go to a Catholic school, and we literally choose student council representatives by picking names out of a basket, saying that the holy spirit will chose the best person. And everything that is in the Bible is true. Everything. Absolutely everything.
Alright so for those who wanna know about tarot cards, imma give a quick little run down.
They're magical, and are often used by witches, you know, those who practice witchcraft. Yes it's still around. Tarot cards can be used in a divination sense (the future predicting Lemia mentioned) but also as a general way to figure out and learn things. Witchcraft and tarot cards aren't religious on their own, but many witches do also happen to be religious and incorporate it with their religion so take it as you will. But yea, tarot cards are super cool in the sense that each one has their own specific meaning and interpretation, and the fact that the deck itself is described as a family. Plus, like anything in witchcraft, people must get to know their deck, and give energy and thanks to their deck.
What probably made some people uncomfortable with it is one, the lack of knowledge because tarot cards and witchcraft aren't a super well known thing, and the whole practice of witchcraft and what not just doesn't work with some people, which is completely fine.
For the Tarot thing:
Divination is a sin in the Christian faith... I think it falls under the category of playing God or something which is against the first commandment of there only being one God
Either that or it falls under the category of art being a sin because " false idols " which is also part of the first commandment
(I'm aware that Christian churches are usually full of art I never said any of this made sense)

My favorite card is probably the queen of clubs because I like her hairstyle. Honestly, though, I really like them all. They all turned out so wonderfully and I don’t think the quality suffered at all. I really can’t imagine all that you went through to make these, and I don’t think anyone here minds at all that they’re late.
These are adorable..love all of them..Tarot cards were actually used and made as a game ,played similar to cards today..Gypsies and Mediums use them..Gypsies recon they can tell the future hmm debatable ..but mediums shuffle them then hand them to the person whose being read..they then read that person by psycometry..picking up vibrations about the person and their loved ones from the cards..a real medium will need no information ,will not be able to tell the future as she or he works with spirit and they do not tell you..So now you know a bit more about tarot cards they are nothing to fear I do not know why people feel funny about them 😀
Tarrot reading is a form of wiccan divination, it is used to gain insight into the future or help with making big choices. Because it is a primarily wiccan thing, it may have made very religious or devout christians uncomfortable because of that. Idk why it would have made them uncomfortable, but they tend to have serious misconceptions about wiccans that i will never get my head around.
I feel like the queens are sister through marriage--they married the four kings who were brothers--but during their husbands reign, a war broke out and the four brothers had to go fight. During this time though, evil had been released into their kingdoms and so they come together and use the magic within themselves (I know this us super cheesy) to save their kingdoms.

tarot cards are considered pagan so a lot of Christian based religions don't like/approve of them. i don't really know why, but I know some religions also avoid Halloween because it was a pagan holiday
I mean. You can always make it possible to buy each card and make a one (maybe cheaper) set with every card.

I just think the word "offensive" was used loosely. Tarot cards make people uncomfortable because it has to do with telling the future, which is often associated with speaking to the dead, demons, and other things. I *think* that if it's done in fun, it's not wrong, but if it's done with the intent to really contact the dead or demons, or tell the future, that is wrong. I wouldn't say I was 'offended', but I would consider it wrong. As to whether they should have changed the topic for fear of 'offending' someone, I think it was kind of them to give people the option to not use tarot cards, but still let those who aren't uncomfortable with it do it.

I do tarot’s frequently and I can’t think of anything being offensive about them religiously unless it is against someone’s religion to use tarot cards.
They don’t have an religious connotations or restrictions.
I know this is old but here what i know on tarot cards. I had a wiccan friend and he used them for a lot of things. How i don't know i never asked. So because they are attached to wiccans the christians assume they come from 'the devil'.
At lest that what I've gotten between this die hard christian and my friend.

I went to china awhile ago and on the way back home once we were at lax we had 3 flights canceled and had to wait in the airport for 36 hrs no compensation or anything it was terrible. I also have really bad migraines. I've had about 6 in the last two weeks.
