- Mycoplasma is the nightmare of every scientist working with Cell Culture. Mycoplasma contamination is threatening academic labs to biopharmaceutical production facilities.
Dr. Rüdiger Arnold, one of our PromoCell Academy lecturer, explains why best practice in detection, elimination and avoiding mycoplasma are necessary for your cell culture.

Question : DOES THE MICOPLASMA PENETRATES THROUGH THE BODY SKIN ( HANDS, FOOT) COULD REACH IN THE BLOOD ?
Are the sequences of the primers available?
How do you prevent Mycoplasma from cell culture?
i read that the mycoplasma are in ne membran of the cells.
so.. are there enough in the media surround or is it better to take cell suspension ( when you have adharent cells)?
Hi Johanna, the vast majority of mycoplasma species are located extracellularly, i.e. outside the cell. This is also true for the mycoplasmas that are normally found in cell cultures. For PCR-based detection of mycoplasmas in cell cultures, culture supernatants have proven to be a very suitable sample material. We hope it helps :)
If mycoplasma is such a problem in cell cultures, then what do you think it's doing to us? Has anyone asked that question?
great question. They might just be in a mutualistic or commensal relationship with us. However, if it is parasitic, then major health issues would've been found a long time ago.
Let's see. Pneumonia, STDs, arthritis, skin lesions, and multiple immune issues. These are just some of the known. It also depends on the strain. The incognitus strain being the most severe. It was discovered in 1987, in AIDS patients.
@@xanderz161 interesting perspective! Thank you for the insight!
