How to repair MSD ignition

- There are two electrical components that failed on this box, one was an N Channel MOSFET and the other was a massive 6000 watt voltage suppressor diode to protect the circuit form back EMF discharge from the coil.
Part #:IRF3205 (MOSFET)
Part#:6ka24 (DIODE)
I could not match the diode exactly so I subbed it with a 5kp24a and I went with an IRF3205 (the higher amp version) for a replacement MOSFET from Digikey. They seem to have worked perfectly so far. I have seen the repaired box fully functional installed on a vehicle and will be posting an update shortly once I have the new video.
That was inspiring! Not many folks fix their stuff. Instead they shell out cash for a new one. I haven't purchased my ignition box yet. I'll be sure to watch for vibration and heat when installing. And now you have shown me something to look for if it fails. Thanks for posting.
If your MSD box is not under warranty, you really got nothing to loose by opening it up and having a look. I know that there can be very big differences in these units based on when it was made. The circuitry changes probably based on serial numbers. All I did was look for fried components and then desoldered them and replaced them with the components listed in the description. If I were you, I would do that as well as it worked for me. You'll need to have the right tools and a decent understan
Nice video and great insight into the issues with these. I just lost another one last week and at $400 every couple of years it is frustrating. Might take a shot at opening the failed one up and seeing if the internals are similar. I use the 6AL2 different connectors, but imagine the same base internals. Thanks again.
YouWrasse IsMine , I know this video is old, but man, you are pretty slick! Where/how did you learn how to diagnose,,let alone fix an MSD box?? Man, I wish that I would have seen your wisdom years ago, because I've walked right on by BUNCHES of these ignition boxs! And I wish that I would have picked up one(would be nice in my DD 86 MR2), now that I might have a shot at repairing it!

Let me pick your brain. I got an older 6T and I've bench tested it same way you did except used a battery. Both triggers work the magnetic pickup and the white wire. I'm trying to install it on a gm 7 pin timing controlled modual. It's straight forward just bypass the pos and neg coming out the modual that goes to the coil easy peezy. Darn thing won't trigger the msd???? All the msd really needs is the neg out from the modual and it fires the coil just fine baffled.

I'm putting one that failed and caused a voltage spike in the car on ebay for cheap as we speak if you want to fix another.
What is the part number for the burned transistor? My box had the same transistor burned up, but I can't read all of the numbers as they are burned off. What I can read is 70N10L..
im not exactly sure what components your msd box has. if its the same as the one in the video, then the parts in the description will work. this repair continues to work to this day.
No. They state specifically on their website that if it has been tampered with they won't fix it.
I got a 6400 msd box in i did the test thing that msd told me in i dont get no spark for the box or coil wire what do you think is wrong and can i fix it and where can i find parts to fix it let me know something thanks

is the MSD Ignition uses to replace the stock ignition or to amplify spark and improve performance? do i need to bypass the stock ignitor?
It's better if you replace the stock ignition and use this box. Hotter, longer, many sparks

When I connected my ignition module msd 6 al identical to the one you show in the video, when I installed it invez released in the coil a positive sign and a pulse , it is launching two positive signs in the coil.
What could it be?
How can I fix ?

Hey man had mine burn up the other day. Mine fried the first transistor but it's burnt and I cannot read the numbers could you help me to find out what I need to order to fix it? I have the same exact msd box. 6 al my diode didn't fry because my ground wasn't hooked up I'm assuming idk
i have one of them dox at the same coditions ,, but i cant find a internal diagram . to fix it ,, do you have one ,, ?? or you can should me wher I can see.

There are several choices as far as quantity on digikey. If in fact you have the same problem this one had, order the parts that i list in the description on digikey and solder them in and it will fix it.

how would i know if the msd is not working
I thought we'd actually see how to repair the box - including taking it apart, de-soldering components, re-soldering, etc. This is all post-repair.
on the second part # you give it said the i got to order 2000 of them did you have to do that
does the msd company take an opened msd for repair or not, because im thinking to open my 6al for repair but if i cannot repair it i need to know if they acceed to repair it opened like that?

Msd trying to tell me wen key on coil should not show 12 v ..lol joke even wen cranking it goes to 4 then 1 then -1 ....there junk I had a gm ingnition on my dodge rv got rid of Mopar mess box ballets worked great tried a msd box 2 of them shows flashing power crank pulses msd says test coil wire spark was soooo weak and was off and on junk wat coil does not have 12 v power at coil
