I have been seeing patients for over 20 years and I genuinely believe that journaling is one of the most impactful behaviours you can bring into your life. It can help with focus, productivity, anxiety, depression, habit formation, decision making, relationships and so much more.
There are many different ways to journal and, of course, you have to find the method that works best for you. For me, answering some simple questions each day is a really easy and impactful way to start.
Please use these questions in your own life. You do not need to buy a journal to answer them at all, But, if you would like a beautifully designed journal that will help you turn this new behaviour into a life changing habit, please do check out 'The 3 Question Journal' that I have created.
If you ask the right questions, you get the right answers. Order your own copy of 'The 3 Question Journal here: bit.ly/3THfFH0

Here are the 3 Questions for morning & evening:
    MORNING:-
    - What's the most important thing to do Today?
    - What's one thing you deeply appreciate about your life?
    - What quality do you want to show to the world today?
    EVENING :-
    - What went well today?
    - What can I do differently tomorrow?
    - what did I do for someone else today?

I started journaling in jail. There wasn't much else to do, but it definitely helped me change my life especially because I had the time to go back sometimes and see how my thinking was improving as I worked on myself.

That's awesome... such a great testimony to the power of journaling. I used to journal when I was a teen, but I had a super traumatic experience with it. Basically, my father read it and completely invaded my privacy... he got angry over things I wrote and it turned into a huge deal. It scared me off from journaling and I've tried to get back to it throughout the years but just haven't been successful. I will make another attempt this new year because I just remember how helpful it was to get my worries out onto paper.

I start my morning the same way. After making my bed I make coffee (I actually use the pour over method) which forces me to manage my time efficiently and teaches patience. I sip while journaling. It’s my spa ritual and a form of meditation I look forward to.
I’m an introvert so it makes me feel like I’m having a conversation without having to deal with anyone else’s energy. 💛

Journaling daily for almost 3 years. I am a different person. I journal thoughts, ideas, questions, answers, and prayers to God. I share everything with the Holy Spirit and I have received healing from past trauma and learned to never again allow someone to victimize me. Happy New Year and God bless everyone searching.

I retired early at 42. My life is so not stressful. The most important thing I have to do today? Make dinner for my kid. So happy to leave corporate life.

@11thsm hi Dear. I decided yo leave Canada for a country that had a lower cost of living. I rented out my house and lived on the income. I also had accumulated savings over the years. Now it's 6 years since I left Canada and I was able to stay home with my son and live on the beach. I was heavily criticised by friends who thought I was giving up a good career and western lifestyle, but everytime I return to Canada I have no doubt that I made the best choice.

At first I'm confused. I don't have anything "important" today. Then I realized it's because I already did it. I packed food for lunch while cooking breakfast. I have set myself up for a healthy, productive day. The rest of it I cannot control and (in the great scheme of my life) probably doesn't matter

Thank you, Dr Chatterjee for this mind opening video. I only watched part of it last night and it was after midnight when I ordered a brand new (Leuchtturm A5, dotted!) journal. It has already been delivered today. I saw the rest of the video, so I missed getting your journal, but I know you are encouraging people to write--- even on individual sheets of paper. I was thrilled and motivated to designate one special book for the 3 Question journal.
I love the idea of associating the 3Q habit with an already well-established routine like breakfast. Simply brilliant. I am giving myself a Plan B if I am unable to do it on a morning: I will use my phone--- not the keyboard, but the voice recorder to still be able to have that 3Q "conversation" with myself!
BTW my new journal has a light grey hard cover. A bit unusual color choice: I have ADHD and a very busy mind. I love color, design.... but I wanted something simple, sleek, not busy. Clarity.
I've never been so psyched to write in a journal! Again, thank you.🙏

I have so many started and stopped journals. The best journal I have in my artwork journal and I just went and pulled it out. There are still pages I can fill and I am going to start here because this is where I can see progress. I started that one in 2013. I'm on a page that has the words can anybody hear me I guess I keep talking to myself no one seems to know my struggle it feels like I'm going insane am I the one who's crazy. This is where I am today still. 2024 I want to change this. Thanks for your wonderful podcast.

Interestingly, with the same set of evening questions, I started Journaling about 2 years ago. I stopped recently, when I went through one of the lowest points in my life.I now recognize that the reason I probably stopped Journaling was because, I simply didn't want to face things. It is an extremely powerful tool. I will restart and now include morning questions and will buy a new diary for the new beginning and to prevent feeling guilty for having stopped for almost 6 months.

I have been asking myself and others, including my grandchildren. What are three things that went well today? Children should learn this as well as adults. I personally think learning to reflect on the successes on the pleasures daily helps keep us out of the spirals that lead to depression or even self shame.
Thank you for your great ideas.

The 3 most important things in life are health, money and courage. Just base your questions and decisions every day around these 3 things. Have the courage/guts to do the things that will bring you money and health every day. The rest of the stuff are just busy things that should be ignored.

I think people also regret continuing relationships with people that don’t nurture us and only take or drain from us. Instead of pursuing new relationships.

PS One thing people never admit, because it's such a big taboo, is that they regret having. I honestly think the regret would be in similar measure either way.

Ego, is the challenge to get rid of it… even Tom’s concern about how to frame his ‘regrets’ is ego. We can manage our lives but cannot control it.

Dear Dr Rangan, I found your examples quite vexing. You are addressing young, fit, working, buzy people. People like yourself. I don't have work, much relations, no money for coffee in a cafeteria. There's not much positive about my life right now. Do I get other people into my life if I do some journaling, here alone? Does it heal my cancer? Does it make my home a little bit warmer? Do I appreciate more my old, stained clothing? My most important thing to do is dying rather sooner than later.

Jesus said, "In the world you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer - I have overcome the world." The answer to everything - is knowing your Maker. I am 76 and have osteo-arthritis all over my body. I am in constant pain and cannot get out very often - but I can still praise God for the sunshine that is now pouring through my window.
If you give your life to Jesus Christ - you will be 'born again' and have the assurance of a life in heaven with Him - where there will be no more pain and heartache. You will then look forward to dying .... but not in the way you have sadly mentioned. Call out to Him, my dear friend, and be 'born again'. Then you will know His peace and joy, that is beyond our understanding. I will pray for you.... Sue

You have already established a goal of new friendships. You also seem to have good communication skills. Sorry you are in a difficult place and, no, journaling will not solve everything but this podcast has already made you crystallise a goal and a skill to be grateful for. Good luck going forward …

For me, regular journalling is now an early warning sign that something in my life is bothering me. It helped me recognise very quickly, that I was entering a relationship with a sly and manipulative psycho who had set about destroying my confidence before, presumably, destroying my life. Journalism helped me to cling to my is perception of reality in the face of his gaslighting. It enabled me to find the strength to bin him. Double quick. Good riddance. The pen is mightier than the sword.

I get stuck in my head journaling! Instead of writing I dance spontaneously to music or I spend 15 minutes on the Option Process which really clears the fog out of my head. Come to think of it, the Option Process for me is the faster and more powerful way of shifting my emotional setting!
