My father used to sell onions. I remember that the tails were comletly dry when the onions were ready.

Thank you for sharing that 😊 Yeah you can keep your onions in the soil until they are completely dry, I usually remove them once they are done growing so I can use the space for other veggies 😁

I harvested mine this weekend. They were not as big as last year, due to Christmas freeze killing them back to the ground and lack of fertilizer due to dry weather and bad weather forecasts. Onions actually need a fair amount of nitrogen early, but you have to stop adding any when the onions start to bulb up. The bigger the top, the bigger the bulb will be.

That happened to me with my carrots, the freeze killed all the tops. A few of my onions split, I think the weather changing from cold to hot so much did it. I fertilized mine early this year when the weather started to warm up.

@@theblossomingbloom My carrots were killed by the freeze. We got down to 12 degrees. If they had been a little bigger, or if I had protected them, the carrots probably would have made it. I replanted the carrots and are ready to be harvested now. You might add your fertilizer after you plant them, rather than just when it warms up. At least that works on Gulf Coast in Texas.
Corn is hard to grow in a raised bed, and needs a lot of nitrogen fertilizer. I would just plant the watermelons by themselves. I may plant some pole field peas (red ripper) with my corn since the peas will use the corn as a trellis after the corn has made its crop. I am thinking of using a kiddie pool and fabric pots to grow corn. I tried it a few years ago and it seemed to work. My wife hand pollinated the ears. If I do I will make a video of it.
