The Input Level is Pre-Amp Gain and the Master Volume is the Amplifier's Attenuator or Volume that's it that's how it works. Just like a mixer the first thing you do is set the gain to give you the best signal from the input source whether it is a low level signal coming from a microphone or a higher level signal, line level, from a keyboard or other devices and then the Channel Fader on the mixer combined with the Master Fader are like the Master Volume on the speaker. In essence the EV Speakers have a 2-Channel Mixer built in
I'm guessing you need to focus on gain structure. You are probably peaking before it gets to the final source which is your speaker. If the gain before isn't set right you try to make up for it by Turing up the speaker. Does that make sense?
I USE THREE ELECTRO VOICE EACH SIDE WHAT IS THE VOLUME THAT I HAVE TO PUT ON THE FIRST, SECOND AND THIRD. I HAVE SIX SPEAKERS FOR THE PUBLIC . I ALWAYS PUT -0 ON ALL OF THEM
How come when I turn these up they peak so fast? Also when you turn the knob up in the back of the speaker they peak even faster and it’s not the volume knob. It’s the knob that goes to 11
It's not the speaker that is peaking it is your source coming to the speaker that is causing it to do that. Use gain structure and pipeline your volume from the beginning source then turn up the speaker. Does that make sense? Check out my other video on gain structure
DJ Jer.. Thank you for all your videos and seminars. I have a pair of powered EV speakers and before I try to use them in a awkward situation I wanted to ask you if it would work. Long story short I built my own DJ booth on wheels with everything integrated. Normally I use a Mackie mixer into an amp then to non powered speakers and done. For setups I want to use the EV speakers can I still go from the Mackie mixer to the amp (keep the amp shut off) and then to the powered speakers? Or would I have to bypass the amp all together and go directly to the EV speakers? Thank you!
RJ Phillips I wish I could tell you that it would be safe to run your powered mixer into a powered speaker and you could just shit it off And everything would work fine but I don't want to give you false information andess up your system. You could get a reasonable mixer to pair with your powered speakers to give you reassurance that you will have a quality system with your powered ev speakers.
djjermusic do you mean running through an amp with it shut off? If I went from Mackie mixer to the EV powered speakers it works great and just fine. I didn't know if there was a connected QSC amplifier between the mixer and the speakers shut off if the signal would just pass through?.. thank you! I appreciate your quick response!
Thank you for your response. It clarifys a lot. If I may ask another question. Looking through all these videos its always about DJ amplification and sound. I have a feeling that live bands need much more power than music from a computer or CD player. Is this assumption right?
Ashley Matente Zimba I know this sounds stupid but is the power switch on? If the screen doesn't power up after you turn it on then try this: 1. Plug in the xlr to the input and turn up the gain level on that line or channel. The LCD screen might be having an issue. 2. If still no sound then I would contact repairs at EV and warranty should cover it. They have been pretty awesome whenever we had any issues. Sorry but I hope that helps a little bit.
Do you use 2 subs normally with our ekx? I have 2 15zlx and 1 18ekx sub. I am looking to upgrade but not sure should I just add one more sub.. or replace the zlx 15s with ekx 15p. and just rock one sub. I am a solo operator, and I dj about 30 weddings a year.
So what's ev's top self powered line etx or ekx ekk zlx. I thought etx was thier flagship line of self powered. . As in what's the most powerful SPL and best quality. They have so many lines now it's rediculous
I have the EV EKX 15's Powered. I am preparing to purchase EV subs to compliment them. I really love the ETX 18SPs from what I've read and heard. However, should I stick with the same line and buy EKX subs to go under my EKX tops or is it okay to pair ETX subs with EKX tops? Thanks in advance!
Great question. So you can for sure mix and match. the ETX is going to give you a little more head room. But, they are heavier because they are a very top of the line solid cabinet. If you have the budget for it, go with the ETX.
My limit light lights up all night long. I keep my 0db and my mixer levels at unity or higher. Do you think I should instead raise the speaker level and lower my mixer levels??
Hi, I have 4 Ekx 18sp, 2 Ekx 15p and 2 Etx 12p for 350 to max 500 people. What’s the best set up for these speakers i have…? 2 Ekx 18sp stack on top of each other with Ekx 15p on top on both sides, crossover to each other or 2 Ekx 18sp stack on top of each other with Etx 12p on top on both sides, crossover to 100hz
Your best option would be to center the two subs in the middle. Then put 15 and 12 next to each other on both sides. The 15s on the inside then treat your 12 as a side fill or satalite.
Great question. You will raise your dB by 3 of you add a speaker but the bigger impact you make by adding speakers to this setup would be dispersion. Because of the angle horizontally the speaker puts out, you will now cover more space providing better sound throughout. Does that make sense?
I currently run two Yamaha DXR 15 mains at weddings. Would this work good with my Yamaha DXR15 mains to add some thump and take the stress off my mains and add clarity when playing open dance music at weddings at louder volume? Torn between the EKX18SP sub and the Yamaha DXS15. I only want one sub. Not looking at the ETX series too much weight and size for packing van.
Jon Tisch any time you add more speakers or subs it will create more DBs. I feel it will add a fuller sounds and take stress off your tops allowing less stress. I don't know any thing about the Yamaha or how the processing works but adding an EKX 18 would work well with your current setup. hope that helps
I'm a dj and i'm looking to buy a powered speaker system. My choices are QSC KW 181 and KW 153 or EV ETX 35p with EV ETX 1s8p. What i've heard is QSC is more dependable. I also heard that QSC had it's time as the king, but EV has raised the bar. I also heard that the EV specs are exaggerated and the limit system kicks in too early. Which if any do you think is true? Which is the better system and why?
great questions and I can answer most. I don't have QSC but I am sure they make a great unit. When it comes to specs I know that is far from true, which will be explained at the Sound Symposium. I can't compare the two but Ll I know when I do/did my homework the EV line was the best option for us. I would recommend hearing them live. I know that probably isn't the clear cut answer but you have to hear. Again EV was the best choice for me
In a typical DJ set up. What is the volume you have these set on? I have the ELX 15p just curious is 12 o'clock is correct on master and input or something else?
Hello, DJ Jer. I recently purchased an ETX-15P. Why is it that the volume of the music starts getting higher and lower after playing music for around 2 or 3 hours?
Ok so what i mean is that when i play music the sound of the speakers go up and down after a while, even sometimes the speaker volume goes completely down by itself and then goes back up (doesn't stay with the same sound as when i start the music. )
are you peaking the speaker? does it show or flash "heat" or "peak" ? are you running subs with it? I guess I am not sure maybe try reaching out to ev and see if they know of the situation or what would cause that. I have never seen that. sorry I wish I was more help.
What i do it's, i connect the speaker's to a Mackie mixer , then connect the Pioneer control, Maybe tha's why... But thank's for your Help and your time ... 👍🏼
Great Video..I did not know that about the DSP volume settings. Question for you..I have the ZLX model and I'm using 4 of them in a hall with 2 18"subs..what would be your recommendation on setting these up to maximize my sound?
+Filthy Sinbag Thank you. Great question as well. Being in a hall I would ask a couple questions as well. What is the width, wall density, number of people, etc. I guess I would have the 2 subs by your system and then flank the 2 other ZLX to the sides as fills. Once you get them set you will want to walk the room to make sure there is balance throughout. Then you will know what needs to be turned up or down. I hope that helps.
I think you would be okay. There should be a setting on your dsp so each speaker knows the top and bottom they are working with and it will adjust accordingly. The only thing is you might need to cut back on your gain for the ETX since it is a VERY powerful speaker. I hope that helps.
djjermusic yes I already have both. I usually pair my ZLX 12p with my EKX18sp but I was wondering if I wanted to use my elx200 15p with the sub what would be your recommendation on the settings?
Hey DJ Jer. Great video. I had a question. I am running 2 EV ZLX 12P's and 1 ETX 18SP with an MC6000MK2. I was wondering how you would hook up these speakers to the MC6000MK2?
Thats what I am talking about!! Since you have the etx and ekx. Do you really need the sub with either one for weddings under 200 people. I am trying to decide if I should by the ekx15 and keep my ekx18p or just buy the ETX 15p and have no sub.
Great question. You can never go wrong by buying a sub. Because everyone is "all about the bass" and yes the ETX is awesome, that doesn't mean it is going to give you more bass. Does that make sense? I think I would stick with the EKX package for the fullest sound instead of trading in for two ETX tops. That is just me though. I hope this helps.
I'm both so hope that helps a bit. I love the Bose for esthetics but I love EV for the sound. And... we use speakers for the sound so that is how I weigh out the differences is what I use for each application.

This was very helpful
Awesome!
Where is” input level” of the second EV cabinet set to..?
Very helpful. Thanks.
For sure. thanks!
Thank you. THis helps.. I would like to see some info on volume with EKx 18p sub and ekx15p
when you say volume do you mean SPL or Db?
What should the the volume be set at. Mines always seem to flash or peek.
I'm guessing you need to focus on gain structure. You are probably peaking before it gets to the final source which is your speaker. If the gain before isn't set right you try to make up for it by Turing up the speaker. Does that make sense?

JER, how would this work if you have subs under the tops? Will the volume from the top, also affect the volume of the sub?
hi, is there a setting to cut the bass (want to use as monitors for mids and highs only) thanks
there is a monitor setting built into the DSP on the ETX and EKX that will allow you to use it exactly how you are asking about. :)
How come when I turn these up they peak so fast? Also when you turn the knob up in the back of the speaker they peak even faster and it’s not the volume knob. It’s the knob that goes to 11

Bro, I have ZLX 15P that is going on but display behind isn't showing at all and no sound coming through. What could be the problem?

Can anyone tell me wether a passive EKX with an amp would sound as good as the powered ETX ?

How do I level sound out sound I have one 15in Sub with 2 15xp and (1) 12 inch monitor
Hi I am using for my band 2 EV EKX 15SP subs and 2 EV EKX 12 tops. Is this scalable? If I use double does this have a huge impact on the volume?
Great question. You will raise your dB by 3 of you add a speaker but the bigger impact you make by adding speakers to this setup would be dispersion. Because of the angle horizontally the speaker puts out, you will now cover more space providing better sound throughout. Does that make sense?
Hello DJ Jer. Can you connect mobile devices to the ETX-15P? I asked because I notice that the ETX doesn't have the RCA inputs like the EKX.
Antonio Price great question. it doesn't have RCA jacks but you can get a cable that goes from 1/8 jack to 1/4 or xlr. we have the cables from NLFX.
I'm not a DJ, but I do host a ton of family gathering at my house, and I'm loving the EV ETX series. Thanks and Happy Holidays!
Why do they turn themselves down when i'm playing at an event? Can I ajust something in the EQ opt.
Me'Lisa White-Thompson I'm not what you mean... Tell me more
which cables are you using?? mic cables?
Luis Alamo I love my cables from NLFX Pro

Hey Seth help me understand your question. Do you already have the ekx subs or the elx tops?

Ronnie Moll run one cable from your board to the sub, and then to your top. Run the other directly to your top. does that help?
Yup. That is how I have been doing it. I just wanted to see if I was doing it correctly or if there was a better way of doing it.. Thank you sir.
Many DJ in my area really like Bose but the cost is up there. What do you think about bose L1 Model 2 series
I use to live and die by my Bose. I still carry them as backups but when it comes to the fullness of sound my Bose can't touch the EVs.
